In planning the interior of the Legend Sedan, Honda designers wanted to take advantage of the larger exterior dimensions by providing more interior space; heighten comfort and convenience through improved equipment; maximize occupant safety; achieve higher quality throughout and maximize driver-oriented ergonomics for a sporty feel.
MATERIALS AND FIT
In trimming the interior, Legend designers emphasized natural materials and careful matching. All thick-molded plastic components - instrument panel,console edges, door ledges, steering wheel- are produced by the same manufacturing method (slush moulding). Their PVC outer surfaces are uniform in color and texture.
In Sedan and L models, the upholstery material is moquette. Optional in the L models and standard in the LS models is discreetly gathered leather for seating surfaces and door-panel inserts. In leather-equipped models, leather also covers the center-console armrest/compartment lid, steering wheel and shifter knob.
The burled walnut on the LS models' center console and door armrests was chosen for its high quality and dependable supply. The walnut is the top layer of a complex veneer construction designed to achieve a three-dimensional look. Simulated wood panels are standard on base and L models.
The audio systems for all Legend Sedans have been upgraded for 1993. The standard Legend system is a fully electronic AM/FM stereo/cassette unit with graphic equalizer, anti-theft feature and two 6.5-in coaxial speakers in the front doors and two 6x9-inspeakers in the rear shelf.
L models now feature an 8-speaker Acura/Bose® Music System. The key to the outstanding reproduction of the Acura/Bose® system is the custom matching of all the components to the unique acoustic environment of the Legend cabin. By using precise monitoring and testing equipment, Bose engineers carefully tailored the speakers, amplifiers and speaker enclosures in order to produce a clear, powerful sound.
The LS models feature the 8-speakerAcura/Bose® Premium Music System. To further enhance audio response, each of the speakers has its own built-in Bose® switching amplifier module for outstanding acoustic reproduction.
INSTRUMENTS AND CONTROLS
The instrument panel presents the driver with large analog dials for the speedometer, tachometer, temperature and fuel gauges. Primary steering-column-mounted controls for lighting, wipers and washers follow an ergonomically logical arrangement. The cruise control and stereo volume/channel selector are actuated from the steering wheel itself. The Legend LS offers an Automatic Climate Control System with full manual override.
DUAL AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS)
All 1993 Legend models include a driver's and passenger's side air bag Supplemental Restraint System(SRS) with automatic seat belt tensioners. The passenger's side air bag system has some unique features. Mounted in the top of the instrument panel's right side, it is made of the same material as the compact driver's air bag in the NSX sports car and still allows room for an ample glove compartment.
The inflation of the passenger's side SRS air bag proceeds first upward, then rearward; once fully inflated, the bag has a volume of 150 liters/5.3 cu ft and is almost two feet tall, extending over part of the dashboard and windshield. Each air bag has its own gas generator, and both deploys simultaneously in response to the SRS sensor systemduring a severe frontal impact.
All electrical connectors in the SRS system are gold-plated for optimum conductivity and corrosion resistance. After an impact, the SRS air bag deflates almost as quickly as it inflated.
AUTOMATIC SEATBELT TENSIONERS AND THREE-POINT SEAT BELTS
As the term Supplemental Restraint System implies, the air bags in the 1993 Legend models incorporate an innovative tensioner system on the front seat belts.This system, triggered by the air bag sensors and computer, automatically takes up slack in the belts in the initial phase of an impact, helping to hold the occupants securely. All rear outboard 3-point belts incorporate a direct clamping mechanism as well. Each belt reel has its own deceleration sensor working with an internal cam-and-ratchet mechanism to clamp the belt near its exit from the reel, substantially limiting the "spool-out" that can occur as a loaded belt tightens on a locked reel.
