Hailing the "Civic Pride" it shares with the state of Indiana and city of Greensburg, Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, LLC today dedicated its new auto plant that last month began producing¹ the fuel-efficient, 4-cylinder Honda Civic Sedan.

Joining the more than 1,000 Honda associates for the event were Honda Motor Co., Ltd. President & CEO Takeo Fukui, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, U.S. Representative Mike Pence and Greensburg Mayor Gary Herbert.

Honda took the occasion of the Indiana plant opening to announce that it plans to transfer exclusive production of the world's only compressed natural gas powered passenger vehicle, the Civic GX, to Honda Manufacturing of Indiana in 2009.

"The entire world of Honda has great 'Civic Pride' in our team of associates in Indiana," Fukui said. "Each Honda associate here in Indiana plays a direct and important role in our ability to meet the needs of our customers. Our challenge is to continue to deliver products of the highest quality, produced with the highest efficiency."

Currently, Honda Manufacturing of Indiana is operating on one shift with plans to add a second shift in 2009. The Honda Civic Sedan produced in Indiana features the 140-hp, 1.8-liter, 16-valve, SOHC i-VTEC® 4-cylinder gasoline engine produced by Honda associates at a Honda engine plant in Anna, Ohio.

Yuzo Uenohara, president of Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, was joined in driving the first Honda Civic off the HMIN assembly line by three Honda associates: Daphna Tubbs of Greensburg, Willard Jones of Indianapolis, and Pam Manis of Sunman.

"The Greensburg facility reflects Honda's growing reputation for flexible and efficient auto manufacturing. It is Honda's fifth U.S. plant designed as a zero waste-to-landfill facility and will be the first Honda facility to feature an on-site parts consolidation center that is helping increase efficiency while reducing vehicle emissions and costs related to transportation and parts handling."

Fukui also recognized the cooperation Honda received from state and local government. "We did not accomplish this challenge alone. Over the past two years, the state of Indiana has become a great teammate along with our partners in Greensburg and Decatur County," he said. Governor Daniels said, "Honda is the kind of company Hoosiers admire and a company we welcome with open arms. We are thrilled by the thousands of jobs that Honda brings to our state and we are excited for the future of southeast Indiana and the opportunities ahead."

Honda announced plans to build the Greensburg facility in June 2006, and broke ground for the new production facility in March 2007. The new plant is a comprehensive production facility that includes metal stamping, plastic injection molding, subassembly and final assembly and other processes that will employ 2,000 associates at full capacity. It sits on a 1,700 acre parcel facing Interstate 74 in Greensburg.

Honda began operations in the U.S. in 1959 with the establishment of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., Honda's first overseas subsidiary. Honda began U.S. production in Ohio in 1979, and began U.S. automobile production in 1982 at its Marysville, Ohio, auto plant. Worldwide Operations: Honda Unveils Experimental Walking Assist Device With Bodyweight Support System

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. today unveiled its second experimental walking assist device that helps support bodyweight to reduce the load on an individual's legs while walking, going up and down stairs, and in a semi-crouching position. The device is designed for people who are capable of walking and maneuvering on their own, but who can benefit from additional leg and body support while performing tasks. Honda will now begin testing the device in real-world conditions to evaluate its effectiveness.

The new walking assist device with the bodyweight support system reduces the load on leg muscles and joints (in the hip, knees, and ankles) by supporting a portion of the person's bodyweight. The device has a simple structure consisting of seat, frame, and shoes, and the individual can put it on by simply wearing shoes and lifting the seat into position. Moreover, a mechanism that directs the assisting force toward the user's center of gravity and the ability to control the assist force in concert with the movement of the legs - both unique Honda innovations - make it possible for the device to provide natural assistance in various postures and motions.

Honda began research on a walking assist device in 1999 with the goal to provide more people with the joy of mobility. The first walking assist device, announced in April 2008, has a stride management system and was designed for people with weakened leg muscles, due to reasons such as aging. The research and development of Honda's advanced humanoid robot, ASIMO, including the study of human walking, provided Honda with the knowledge necessary to develop the walking assist device. This research has been conducted by the Fundamental Technology Research Center of Honda R&D Co., Ltd. in Wako, Saitama. To evaluate the effectiveness of the experimental model of the walking assist device with bodyweight support system, Honda will test the walking assist device at its Saitama Factory (in Sayama, Saitama) starting this month.

Key Features:

Convenient sitting-type device
- The individual simply needs to wear shoes and raise the seat into place.
- The user can benefit from the assist without belts fastening the device to their body.
- The structure to position the device between the individual's legs minimizes the required footprint, therefore making it easier for them to maneuver.
Method to assist bodyweight support
- The device will support a portion of the person's bodyweight by lifting the seat as the frame between the shoe and seat bends and extends, just like knees, with the force from the motor. As a result, the load on leg muscles and joints (in the hip, knees, and ankles) is reduced.
- Honda developed a unique mechanism where the seat and frame follow the movement of the body and legs. The assisting force will be directed toward the individual's center of gravity, just as with human legs, which enables the device to provide assistance in various movements and postures including walking, going up and down stairs, and in a semi-crouching position.
Natural control of the assisting force
- Natural walking is achieved by changing the amount of assisting force applied to the right and left legs through the control of two motors based on the information obtained though sensors imbedded in the shoes of the device.
- The effectiveness of the device was increased in those motions and postures which put increased load on knees, such as going up and down stairs and in a semi-crouching position. This was achieved by adjusting the assisting force in accordance with the bending and stretching motion of the knees.

Worldwide Operations: Honda Enhances Flexible Manufacturing Network in North America

Honda (www.honda.com) will begin production1 of V-6 Accord sedans at its Alabama auto plant while increasing production of 4-cylinder Accords in Marysville, Ohio, the company today announced. These moves are part of a series of production adjustments that Honda is making in North America and globally to meet customer demand for its lineup of fuel-efficient passenger cars and light trucks, as well as to ensure the most efficient use of its manufacturing capacity.

"We are leveraging our flexible manufacturing network to meet the needs of our customers for more fuel-efficient products," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "We will continue to guide our business based on strategic and careful management tied to our core values."

The latest changes in Honda's North American production strategy include:

The majority of V-6 Accord sedan production will shift from Honda's Marysville Auto Plant in Ohio to the Honda auto plant in Lincoln, Ala. in mid-2009.
The Marysville Auto Plant will increase its production of 4-cylinder Accord sedans in mid-2009, decreasing imports of Accord to the U.S.
The Anna, Ohio Engine Plant, will increase production of 4-cylinder engines.
Production of the Honda Ridgeline pickup will be moved from Canada to Alabama in early 2009 (previously announced).

Alabama Auto Plant to Begin Production of V-6 Accord Sedan

By mid-2009, the majority of V-6 Accord sedan production will shift from Honda's Marysville Auto Plant in Ohio to the Honda auto plant in Lincoln, Ala. This will be the first time the Alabama plant has produced passenger cars since it began production of the Odyssey minivan in November 2001. The Accord V-6 sedan will become the fourth model produced on the plant's two assembly lines.

The Alabama plant now produces the Odyssey minivan and Pilot sport utility vehicle. Earlier this year, Honda announced plans to transfer production of the Ridgeline truck to Alabama from its No. 2 auto plant in Canada in early 2009. Annual production capacity at the Alabama plant will remain at 300,000 vehicles and 300,000 V-6 engines.

The Alabama plant plans to further reduce light truck production through the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2009, to adjust output to current market conditions as well as to prepare for the launch of Accord production.

Marysville, Ohio, Auto Plant Increasing Production of 4-cylinder Accords

In conjunction with the start-up of V-6 Accord sedan production in Alabama, the Marysville Auto Plant will increase production1 of 4-cylinder Accord sedans. This will result in Honda reducing imports of 4-cylinder Accords from its Saitama Factory in Japan. The Marysville plant will continue to produce the V-6 Accord sedan and coupe, Acura TL performance sedan, and the Acura RDX luxury SUV on its two assembly lines.

Through September 2008, more than 80 percent of Honda's Accord sales in the U.S. were produced in the U.S. Following this production adjustment next year, an even higher percentage of Accords sold in the United States will be produced in Ohio and Alabama. Annual production capacity of the Marysville Auto Plant will remain at 440,000 units.

Anna, Ohio Engine Plant Increasing Production of 4-cylinder Engines

In conjunction with the transfer of V-6 Accord sedan production to Alabama, and to help meet demand for 4-cylinder engines, Honda's engine plant in Anna, Ohio, will shift some of its production capacity from V-6 to 4-cylinder engines. In Alabama, Honda will add V-6 Accord engines to its current V-6 engine production for its Odyssey and Pilot models. The Anna plant produces engines for vehicles assembled in Ohio, Indiana and Canada, and for export to Honda operations overseas. Annual capacity at Anna will remain at 1.18 million engines.

Flexible North American Production Operations

For the past decade, Honda has invested in the development of a highly flexible and efficient manufacturing network of plants in North America, enhancing its ability to quickly and efficiently respond to changes in customer demand. The addition of Accord production in Alabama will provide Honda with increased flexibility to meet the requirements of the North American market, while also ensuring more efficient use of overall production capacity. Already, Honda's East Liberty and Marysville plants in Ohio and the No. 2 plant in Canada are producing cars and light trucks on the same line.

Honda built a record 1,432,731 cars and light trucks in North America in 2007, including 1,015,462 units in the U.S. Last year, more than 76 percent of all Honda and Acura vehicles sold in America were produced in North America, the highest percentage for any international automaker. Honda purchased more than $18.8 billion in parts and materials from suppliers in North America last year.

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. will showcase an experimental model of a walking assist device which could support walking for the elderly and other people with weakened leg muscles, at the International Trade Fair on Barrier Free Equipments & Rehabilitation for the Elderly & the Disabled (BARRIER FREE 2008) which will be held at Intex Osaka, Friday, April 25 through Sunday, April 27, 2008.

Designed for people who are still capable of walking on their own, Honda began research of a walking assist device in 1999 with a goal to provide more people with the joy of mobility. Currently, the device has entered into the feasibility stage.

The cooperative control technology utilized for this device is a unique Honda innovation achieved through the cumulative study of human walking just as the research and development of technologies was conducted for Honda's advanced humanoid robot, ASIMO. Applying cooperative control based on the information obtained from hip angle sensors, the motors provide optimal assistance based on a command from the control CPU. With this assist, the user's stride will be lengthened compared to the user's normal stride without the device and therefore the ease of walking is achieved.

The compact design of the device was achieved with flat brushless motors and a control system developed by Honda. In addition, a simple design to be worn with a belt around the hip and thigh was employed to help achieve overall weight as light as approximately 2.8kg. As a result, the device reduces the user's load and can be fit to different body shapes.
The research of this device is being conducted by the Fundamental Technology Research Center of Honda R&D Co., Ltd. in Wako, Saitama, Japan.

Honda Aircraft Company, Inc., today announced plans to expand sales of HondaJet to Europe, beginning in May at the annual EBACE (European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition) conference in Geneva, Switzerland. The sales expansion comes as Honda Aircraft Company today finalized its U.S. distribution network with the selection of Albany, New York, as the final location among its five sales and service facilities being established across the country.

Honda's decision to expand sales of its advanced light jet to the rapidly growing European market is in response to strong demand for the aircraft from customers throughout the region. Offering class-leading performance, fuel efficiency, interior cabin space and cargo capacity, HondaJet is well suited to meet the needs of European business and personal light jet owners and operators.

"We are excited to initiate sales in Europe, where we have received a steady stream of inquiries from interested customers who will now have the opportunity to reserve delivery of a HondaJet," said Michimasa Fujino, Honda Aircraft Company president and CEO. "We are committed to providing our customers with both a class-leading product and a sales and service support system that exceed their expectations for private jet ownership and travel."

Honda recently expanded HondaJet sales throughout North America, announcing the establishment of a sales and service strategy for Mexico and Canada. "The expansion of HondaJet sales to Europe is an important step in the continued evolution of our business strategy, which seeks to address the extensive worldwide demand for HondaJet," said Fujino.

Further details regarding the HondaJet European sales and service support strategy and delivery timing will be released by Honda on May 20, 2008, at EBACE.

With the selection of Albany, N.Y., as the location for its HondaJet East sales and service facility, Honda has completed the establishment of a nationwide U.S. sales and service infrastructure for HondaJet. Tallahassee, Fla. (HondaJet Southeast), Aurora, Ill. (HondaJet Midwest), Phoenix, Ariz. (HondaJet Southwest), and Salt Lake City, Utah (HondaJet Northwest) previously have been announced as HondaJet sales and service locations. Honda has established its U.S. sales and service network to provide unparalleled quality and convenience to HondaJet customers, with flight times for all customers to their nearest facility limited to 90 minutes or less.

Construction on all of the U.S. HondaJet sales and service facilities will begin in the near future, and completion is scheduled to coincide with the anticipated certification and first deliveries of HondaJet in 2010.

Worldwide HondaJet pilot training will be conducted in partnership with Flight Safety International, which will include the development of a Level-D full-motion flight simulator for HondaJet. The first simulator will be installed at Honda Aircraft Company's new headquarters facility. Additional training facilities will be established in the future as HondaJet sales continue to grow.

Global Sales

In 2005, Honda reached more than 21.2 million customers worldwide through its three core business lines - motorcycles, automobiles and power equipment. 6-Region Global Structure

Manufacturing Flexibility

In the pursuit of its "Green Factory" concept, which aims at more efficient and environment-friendly manufacturing operation for the next generation, Honda continues to innovate its global production facilities to its flexible "New Manufacturing System" to reduce the time and cost required to bring new models to market. Honda's major plants worldwide now have the capability to produce multiple models and to quickly and efficiently shift production based on global and regional market demands.

"Safety for Everyone"

Honda has a well-established history of leadership in the development and application of advanced safety technologies and the real world safety performance of all its products. Now, based on its commitment to offering "Safety for Everyone" through technology and innovation, Honda is improving safety for all road users, including drivers and passengers of small and large vehicles, motorcycles and also for pedestrians.

Honda began introduction in 2003 of a unique new frontal body architecture called the Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACETM) body structure. The ACE body structure enhances occupant protection while also enhancing compatibility with other vehicles. Already standard on many Honda vehicles, the ACE body design will be applied to all new vehicle platforms worldwide over the next four to five years.

Honda opened its $64 million state-of-the art indoor vehicle-to-vehicle crash safety testing facility in Tochigi, Japan, in 2000. It has been playing a critical role in the development of many crash safety improvements. In 2003, Honda established another $30 million major crash safety research facility in the U.S. in Raymond, Ohio, including the world's most sophisticated high-resolution crash barrier block and the world's first pitching crash test simulator.

Honda has also been a leader in airbag technologies such as the first upwardly deploying front passenger airbags and the first use of front side-airbags with occupant position detection sensors to reduce the risk of injuries caused by airbag deployment to children and small statured adults. Honda was a leader in the adoption of dual-stage, dual-threshold air bags that utilize both crash severity and seat belt use to optimize airbag deployment.

In its efforts to improve safety for all road users, Honda is expanding the use

of features designed to reduce injuries to pedestrians including collapsible hood structures and hood hinges, specially designed front frame construction and breakaway windshield wiper pivots. These features are already in use in millions of Honda vehicles worldwide. Further, Honda has independently developed the POLAR II pedestrian crash test dummy to lead this research effort. Honda has made POLAR II available to government and other organizations in the U.S., Japan and Europe in the cooperative effort to advance pedestrian protection.

Following full introduction of its 2007 model year vehicles, Honda will have fulfilled the commitment of its Safety for Everyone' initiative. The completion is signaled by standard application of anti-lock brakes (ABS), driver and front passenger side airbags with front passenger position sensors, and side curtain airbags to virtually all Honda passenger vehicles- from the subcompact Fit to the Ridgeline pickup truck - as well as Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and rollover sensors for the side curtain airbags on all light trucks. More than 99 percent of all Honda passenger vehicles sold to date in 2006 are equipped with ABS, front side airbags and side curtain airbags.

American Honda has already applied VSA as standard equipment on all light truck models; including the Honda Odyssey, CR-V, Pilot and Ridgeline, and Acura RDX and MDX. With the addition of VSA to the 2007 Honda Element, the company achieved its goal of 100-percent application of VSA to all light truck models. For 2007, VSA will also be standard equipment on V6-equipped Accord models and Civic Si, meaning that almost 60 percent of American Honda's total fleet will feature VSA as standard equipment in the 2007 model year.

Other pioneering efforts include the first small car to earn the federal government's highest crash safety rating (2001 Civic), the first small car to earn a Insurance Institute for Highway Safety "Top Safety Pick-Gold Award" rating (2006 Civic) and the first four-door pickup to earn a five-star rating for both frontal and side impacts (2006 Ridgeline).

Environmental Challenge

Honda has long been a pioneer in the global auto industry in the development and application of leading edge environmental technologies that improve fuel efficiency and reduce vehicle emissions - while delivering the fun, performance, quality and reliability that customers expect. Honda is the first automaker in the world to announce global CO2 reduction goals for its products and production activities.

In May 2006, Honda announced plans to achieve a further CO2 reduction of 5 percent or more, with the goal to achieve a total 10 percent reduction by 2010 compared to the level of 2000. To achieve this target, Honda announced the following plan:

Honda will introduce a new, more affordable dedicated hybrid vehicle suitable for family use with a global sales volume of 200,000 units. Honda will introduce this vehicle in 2009 at a price level lower than the Civic Hybrid.

Based on the current highly successful diesel engine currently sold in Europe, Honda will introduce a 4-cylinder clean diesel engine within the next three years that will meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) stringent Tier 2, Bin 5 emission standard requiring NOx emission levels equivalent to a gasoline-powered vehicle. Honda will also work toward development of a clean V6 diesel engine.

Honda will also continue to advance its leadership in internal combustion engine technology. Honda introduced the Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system to the Accord Hybrid, as well as to the Inspire in Japan and the Odyssey and Pilot in North America. VCM improves fuel efficiency by shutting off three cylinders of a V-6 engine when the vehicle is cruising on the highway or in other situations where less power is required. The fall 2005 introduction of the all-new Civic Hybrid further advanced Honda hybrid technology with a 20-percent gain in efficiency and significantly improved real world fuel economy. Honda was the first automaker to market three distinct hybrid vehicles in North America - the Insight, Civic Hybrid and Accord Hybrid.

Honda became the first automaker in the world to market a fuel cell vehicle certified by the U.S. EPA and the state of California - and first introduced the FCX fuel cell vehicle in 2001 simultaneously both in Japan and the U.S. Honda has also developed its own fuel cell stack and introduced it in the breakthrough FCX in 2004. This remarkably compact and advanced fuel cell stack is designed to operate at temperatures as low as -4^oF - one of the most significant technical barriers to the mass-market application of fuel cell technology.

The company has also introduced a new FCX Concept vehicle that employs a new vertically oriented fuel cell stack for improved vehicle packaging and performance. A production version of the FCX Concept is slated for introduction in the next three to four years.

The environmental challenge does not apply only to automobiles. For 2-wheel vehicles, Honda produces only 4-stroke engine motorcycles for on-road use with improved environmental performance over 2-stroke engines. And Honda was the first company with an entire line of higher performance outboard motors to meet the EPA's year 2006 emission standards.

Challenges for the Future

Honda is challenging itself to create advanced technologies that create new value for its customers and society. This involves extensive research & development focused not only on improving existing product lines, but also exploring new areas of mobility.

Honda has independently developed a turbofan jet engine and HondaJet - a small business jet. The company also formed a joint venture with General Electric Co. to bring the jet engine to market - to innovate the small jet market.

Honda announced plans in July 2006 to enter the innovative HondaJet in the growing very light jet market, with the process of accepting sales orders expected to begin in the U.S. in fall 2006. Toward this goal, Honda will establish a new U.S. company to hold FAA type certification and production certification. Honda's goal is to complete type certification in about 3-4 years, followed by the start of production in the U.S.

Honda engineers created the world's most advanced humanoid robot ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative MObility) to someday help people in need. ASIMO can now run, walk forward and backward and climb stairs, and was created to function in real-world environments after almost 20 years of research and development.

The Racing Spirit

More than fifty years after announcing its intentions to enter the international racing scene, Honda continues its commitment to motorcycle and automobile racing throughout the world. Honda continues to compete on virtually every available motorcycle racing circuit, including the Moto GP World Championship, and Superbike, Supercross and Motocross racing.

In auto racing, Honda races on the challenging Formula One Grand Prix in this third era of the company's fabled F-1 racing heritage. Honda is also involved in open-wheel racing as the sole engine supplier to the Indy Racing League (IRL) - an oval track series based in North America. In just its third season, Honda swept the competition in the 2005 series, winning three major IRL championships - the Manufacturers' Championship, Drivers' Championship and Rookie of the Year - for the second year in a row.

In April 2006, Acura announced the first factory motorsports program in its 20-year history with plans to compete in the American Le Mans series with three teams, beginning with the 12 Hours of Sebring race in March 2007. The program marks the first complete engine design and development effort by Honda Performance Development (HPD), based in Santa Clarita, California.

Importantly, racing means not only winning championships on the race track, but the training of engineers who will deliver fun and performance to vehicles enjoyed by Honda and Acura customers.

Honda has begun realizing its potential in the European auto industry, based on an increased focus on offering products that meet the needs of local customers, achieving higher capacity utilization of Honda's auto plant in the United Kingdom, and innovating sales activities throughout Europe.

Honda's European activities are coordinated by Honda Motor Europe, Ltd. (HME) in the UK, together with its sub-regional headquarters in Germany and France. HME has responsibility for supporting and strategically coordinating all Honda's European business activities, including production, sales, marketing and service operations. The motorcycle and power equipment business also have separate regional headquarters for Europe in Italy and France, respectively. Situated close to the major market for each of the products in the region, those headquarters provide strategic decision making for the business lines, coordinating with an overall European strategy by HME. Honda's research and development functions are carried out by Honda R&D Europe with major centers in Germany and the UK.

Sales

Honda's 2004 European car sales exceeded its original target of 220,000 units, as sales rose 17.6% to a record 255,721 units. The growth was led by sales of the new Accord, the B-segment Jazz model (known as "Fit" in Japan), and the Civic.
The all-new Accord Diesel features the outstanding performance of Honda's i-CTDi diesel engine, which provides high performance together with excellent fuel economy, low emissions and extremely low noise. Honda is expanding application of the i-CTDi engine to the best-selling CR-V and the FR-V, a compact MPV with a unique 3+3 seat configuration. Together with the new Civic Diesel to be launched in 2006, this expanded lineup of four diesel models with i-CTDi engines will help increase sales in markets where diesel vehicles are more popular.
Honda unveiled the "Civic Concept" - a five-door hatchback design exclusively developed for the European market - at the Geneva Auto Salon. The mass production model will be introduced in early 2006. It will feature the award-winning 2.2 i-CTDi diesel engine, as well as a state-of-the-art gasoline engine line-up.
Making effective use of Honda's global manufacturing resources, Honda is now marketing motorcycles made in India, Thailand and Brazil in Europe, complementing motorcycles built in Spain, Italy and Japan. Further, China-made Jazz models will be imported to the European market in mid-2005.
Honda produces and sells 125cc and 150cc scooters with fuel injection systems.
In Africa and the Middle East, a high quality, low priced scooter manufactured in China is marketed to customers who previously could not afford motorcycles.

Production

Honda's European car plant - Honda of the U.K. Manufacturing (HUM) in Swindon, - achieved record production of 193,455 vehicles in 2004, up 4.7% from the previous year.
Adding a diesel model to the CR-V line-up and the full model change of Civic will end CR-V exports to North America and HUM's production capacity will be dedicated to supplying the European market.
Utilizing the strength of Honda's Asian operations by importing high quality and low cost powertrain components from Asia (excluding Japan) has further enhanced the cost competitiveness of HUM-built vehicles.

Honda's growing manufacturing and R&D operations are well situated within the South America Region. Honda has been producing motorcycles in Brazil since 1976, and automobiles since 1997. R&D activities began in 1980.

Established in the year of 2000, Honda's South America Region Operation is responsible for developing strategies that reflect the unique economic, cultural and market conditions of the Region - such as MERCOSUR, region's Southern cone free trade agreement - and for the management of both Honda's R&D and manufacturing operations in Brazil.

Honda's strategic positioning in the MERCOSUR provides a solid foundation for its growth in the region. Mercosur member countries are currently pursuing many trade agreements with other nations within the Americas. As one example, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay have a trade agreement with Mexico. Thus, Mexican-built Honda Accords are exported to these countries as a result. Eventually, the ultimate expansion into the larger FTAA (Free Trade Area of the Americas) is targeted for the future.

Production

Moto Honda da Amazonia is one of Honda's largest motorcycle plants in the world, with an annual production capacity of 1 million units, focused on small displacement motorcycles.
Honda Automoveis do Brasil has now an annual production capacity of 70,000 automobiles - building the Civic Sedan and the Honda Fit.
Currently, the local parts procurement ratio in Brazil for the Fit is approximately 70%. The expansion in Brazil to produce the Fit represents a $150 million investment including expansion of production capacity from 30,000 to 55,000units and employment to approximately 1,240 associates. Currently, the Fit is exported from Brazil to all left-hand drive markets in South America, Central America and the Caribbean - 19 countries in total.

R&D

R&D activities in the region began in 1980 - a few years after the start of local motorcycle production - to focus not only on supporting local sourcing of assembly component parts, but also to conduct market research, product planning, product homologation, testing and styling design.

Honda R&D Brazil Center was established in 1997 to place greater focus on automobile market research within the region, to integrate with Honda's Brazilian automobile plant, and to increase local parts-sourcing efforts.

Honda's motorcycle and automobile operations are growing rapidly in the Asian region -- and Honda's increased involvement in its sales and production operations in the region has the company making more efficient use of these resources as part of a regional supply network in Asia as well as a global network.

Motorcycle

Honda is experiencing remarkable growth of its motorcycle business in the region, with sales reaching over 7 million units.
P.T. Astra Honda Motor Inc., Honda's joint venture motorcycle company in Indonesia, is constructing a new plant with a capacity of 1 million units annually, making the company Honda's largest motorcycle production subsidiary in the world with the annual capacity of 3 million units.
Honda Motorcycle & Scooters India constructed a second assembly line to add 150,000 units of capacity. Together with Hero Honda Motors, India now has the largest production capacity of Honda motorcycles of any country in the world at 3.1 million units annually.
In a further effort to meet the needs of local customers, a new motorcycle R&D facility was added in Thailand in 2004 to strengthen the existing R&D activities. Honda also conducts motorcycle R&D in Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam and India.
Honda exports scooters and motorcycles made in India and Thailand to Europe.

Automobile

Honda has increased its commitment throughout Asia, including increasing its capital participation in automobile operations in a number of countries, particularly Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand.
Utilizing Honda's complementary supply network within the ASEAN region and by utilizing the AFTA scheme, in 2002, Honda began the reciprocal supply of the Stream from Indonesia to Thailand, and the Accord from Thailand to Indonesia. Also, the City model for Indonesia and the Jazz model for Malaysia and the Philippines are supplied from Honda's plant in Thailand instead of through local production. Indonesia has started to export Stream to Malaysia in 2004.
In the Republic of Korea, Honda established its first automobile sales subsidiary and began auto sales in 2004.
Honda was granted a license to produce automobiles in Vietnam. Annual production capacity at the new factory will be 10,000 units, with production targeted to begin by mid-2006. The Honda Civic will be the first model to be produced in Vietnam.

Global Supply Network

Fully utilizing Honda's experience in motorcycle production, and through cooperation with parts suppliers, Honda is enhancing the function and responsibility of its Asian operations to serve as export hubs for products, components and transmissions within the region and to Honda's global operations.

Honda's automobile exports from Thailand reached 44,564 units in 2004 to more than 30 countries, including Japan.
Manual transmissions produced in the Philippines, and automatic transmissions, continuously variable transmissions and engine valves produced in Indonesia are exported globally - roughly 30% of these transmissions go to Honda's European operations.

Honda has continued to expand its operations in China, and better focus its strategy for the region. Honda has been establishing a strong brand identification in each business line to clearly differentiate it from the competition in the areas of sales, service, and products.

A wholly-owned subsidiary - Honda Motor (China) Investment Co., Ltd. (HMCI)- has consolidated regional headquarters functions and is responsible for developing Honda's overall business strategy in China. This includes facilitating the integration of Honda's growing operations in China into the concept of sharing the company's global resources.

Motorcycle

Sundiro Honda and Wuyang-Honda are replacing existing plants, which were built in the 1980s, in order to update their production systems and prepare for future expansion of its production capacity. The new plants will achieve major improvements in production efficiency through the introduction of synchronized production and other systems.
HMCI established a branch in Shanghai, specialized in motorcycle business. The Shanghai branch is responsible for the development of Honda's entire motorcycle business and product strategies in China, as well as for supporting marketing, service, quality and procurement for Honda's motorcycle subsidiaries in the country.
Honda is now well-positioned to take advantage of the 11 million-unit Chinese motorcycle market - with annual sales reaching nearly 1 million units in 2004.
Honda exports more than 200,000 motorcycles made in China to Japan, Africa and the Middle East. In 2005, surrounding Asian countries are to be added to the destination. These motorcycles are made using parts from multiple countries.
Honda became the first international motorcycle maker to establish a motorcycle R&D operation in China in 2002, to focus more closely on local customer needs.

Automobile

Honda's total annual production capacity in China will be doubled from the current 270,000 units to 530,000 units by the latter half of 2006.
Guangzhou Honda, Honda's first automobile production operation in China, will add a second plant with an annual production capacity of 120,000 units to be operational in the latter half of 2006. Guangzhou Honda began auto production in China with the Accord in 1999. In addition to the Accord, the plant currently produces the Odyssey minivan (Japanese version), the Fit Saloon and the Fit Hatchback. Guangzhou Honda now has a production capacity of 240,000 vehicles annually. Guangzhou Honda is also responsible for distributing automobiles through the exclusive dealer network in the country.
Honda also produces an equal amount of engines in China through its Dongfeng Honda Engine joint venture operation.
Honda Automobile (China) Co., Ltd. - a joint venture with Guangzhou Motor and Dongfeng Motor produces small cars (Jazz for Europe) exclusively for export with the annual capacity of 50,000 units.
Dongfeng Honda Automobile Co., Ltd. began production of the CR-V in April 2004. Annual production capacity is at 30,000 units, increasing to 120,000 units by early 2006 with introduction of the new Civic.
To support these local operations, Honda Engineering China will begin operation in fall 2005, of a new facility to produce dies and support mass production.

Power Products

Honda began producing power products in China in 1995 through the joint venture company Honda-Mindong Generator Co., Ltd. In 2002, Jialing-Honda, a motorcycle joint venture company also started production of power products.
In 2001, Honda began exporting a China-made generator model to Japan. The export of general purpose engines from Jialing-Honda Motors Co., Ltd. in Chongqing began in 2003, to markets including Europe and Australia.

The continued growth of Honda's 6-region global strategy has resulted in two separate and distinct roles for Honda's Japan operations - meeting the needs of local customers and strengthening the growing autonomy of overseas operations.

Facing stiff competition and a difficult economy in Japan, Honda has focused considerable attention on developing unique products for its customers in Japan, while continuing to focus on the flexibility and efficiency of the production facilities that produce these products and the sales networks that market them.

Further, in line with the strategy of making the most efficient use of global resources, Honda continues to play a vital role as a "global headquarters" - developing product and production technologies and coordinating their distribution and implementation to best serve each region's needs.

Sales/Product

Honda earned "Japan Car of the Year" honors with the all-new Legend (Acura RL), Honda's flagship luxury performance sedan, with a 300-horspower engine and the world's first Super Handing All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system.
Honda continues to import products made at Honda facilities outside Japan as part of the on-going strategy to make most efficient use of global resources.
Honda became the world's first automaker to supply a fuel cell vehicle to private corporations in 2003, an important step for data collection both for fuel cell vehicles and the hydrogen infrastructure. Honda also started leasing FCX with Honda's original fuel cell stack, which is capable of starting in sub-freezing temperatures.
Honda continues to expand the application of the world's first electronically controlled fuel injection system ('PGM-FI') for use in 4-stroke, 50cc motorcycle engines. The PGM-FI system offers improved fuel economy and a reduction in emissions below levels required by Japanese government regulations. All Honda scooters for sale in Japan will be converted to PGM-FI by 2007.

Production

Production of some ATV models was transferred from the U.S. to the Kumamoto Factory to strengthen the leader function of Japan in supporting the expansion of Honda's overseas operations.
The casting and machining of diesel engines is being transferred from Honda's production engineering operations in Japan to the Suzuka Plant to increase mass production to meet greater demand in Europe and to serve as a leader function for the start-up of diesel engine production in the U.K.
Honda's flexible New Manufacturing System is in place at all of Honda's auto and motorcycle plants in Japan - using standardized equipment and processes to minimize model-specific investment. Part of Honda's "Green Factory" initiative, the new system also reduces waste and energy use.

Research & Development

Honda R&D was established as a separate company in 1960 to provide Honda engineers the freedom to pursue the best technologies for Honda customers. Even as Honda continues to localize R&D activities in each region around the world, Honda R&D in Japan remains at the core of the company's research efforts and product development - developing fundamental technologies, powertrains and platforms.
Honda R&D established a new research facility in Tochigi focused on research into advanced technologies for next generation engines.
