Generators: Honda V-Twin Engine General Overview

1. Discuss the Honda V-Twin engine model line-up. Which Honda V-Twin engine powers the all-new EB10000 generator?

Honda V-Twin engines offer customers more power, adaptability, greater fuel economy and reduced emissions in a more compact package. The series includes six V-Twin models (GX/GXV630, GX/GXV660 and GX/GXV690). The Honda GX630 engine powers the all-new Honda EB generator model.

2. What are the applications for the Honda V-Twin models (both vertical and horizontal crankshaft models)?

Honda V-Twin models are available in both horizontal and vertical shaft configurations and are well suited for commercial turf, utility vehicle, construction and rental equipment applications. Specifically, Honda’s V-Twin engines are designed for demanding, power-hungry, commercial applications such as commercial turf and landscape equipment (zero-turn radius mowers, lawn tractors, trenchers, stump grinders and chipper/shredders) and construction equipment (concrete saws, vibratory rollers, ride-on cement trowels, and generators). Additional applications include use in pressure washers and floor buffers.

The smaller overall packaging of the Honda V-Twin also allows for more versatility and a greater breadth of product applications, including the all-new Honda EB10000 generator.

3. What design features contribute to the superior performance of the Honda V-Twin engines?

Honda V-Twin engines feature an advanced style that looks different from other engines in its class. A number of design elements contribute to the engine’s enhanced performance:

A hemispherical combustion chamber engine design is used on all V-Twin models. This design offers a higher 9.3:1 compression ratio, higher power output and greater displacement in a more compact design.

An integrated cylinder and cylinder head eliminates the need for a head gasket and bolts, resulting in a reduction in the number of components and increased reliability.

Cooling efficiency is improved via the smooth resin fan design with large air intake that leads to more efficient cooling and reduced noise. Noise is further reduced via the use of steel connecting rods and aluminum push rods.

Fuel consumption is reduced to levels comparable to fuel injected competitor engines through the use of precise fuel metering through a twin barrel inner-vent carburetor, reduced internal friction and digital Capacitive Discharge Ignition (CDI) with variable ignition timing.

4. What key features make the Honda V-Twin design so technologically advanced?

The V-Twin Engine Series features a higher compression ratio – 9.3:1 – than most engines in its class. Superior fuel efficiency, emission performance and noise reduction are some of the most important advancements for this product. With Honda V-Twin models, customers are receiving more power, better fuel economy, reduced emissions, and less noise – all in a smaller, more versatile envelope.

5. Are the Honda V-Twin models designed as original equipment only for commercial applications or can equipment owners purchase the engines individually as replacement engines for equipment?

Consumers can purchase an engine individually, and it is always advisable to consult a local Honda Engine Distributor regarding the purchase. This ensures that the end-user selects the correct model for the specific application in question and that any additional necessary components, such as the muffler, are ordered.

Generators: Honda EB10000 Industrial Series Generator General Overview

1. Detail the importance of the launch of the all-new Honda EB10000 generator.

Honda industrial generators have earned a leading reputation in the construction and rental industries for their rugged reliability and outstanding performance. In 2012, Honda expands its Industrial Series generator line with an all-new model – the EB10000, now the most powerful Honda generator and the company’s flagship model. The launch of this generator reinforces core focus areas of the Honda Power Equipment team: continuous improvement of technology and the integration of innovation into product offerings for customers in both residential and commercial sectors.

The rugged and powerful EB10000 generator, with a maximum output of 10,000 watts, is compact, lightweight and features a narrow-shaped design, a centralized exhaust mechanism, a newly developed alternator, and the best fuel efficiency and lowest noise in its class. Its innovative layout includes a patented frame design that clearly delineates its hot and cool operating parts, along with a one-touch, removable plastic top cover allowing for easy battery access and maintenance. In addition, the Honda EB10000 generator is designed with the i-Monitor digital operation system (with lighting), displaying a number of alerts for the operator: total used hours, generating voltage (when error detected), battery condition, Oil Alert®, and an AVR (auto voltage regulator) error code, all of which improve understanding about service and maintenance activities.

2. Provide a listing of top features and benefits for the all-new Honda EB10000 generator.
Exclusive Features and Operation

1. Discuss the application of the Honda new Digital Auto Voltage Regulator (DAVR) as part of the all-new Honda EB10000 generator.

The new Digital Auto Voltage Regulator (DAVR) is an exclusive Honda feature integrated into the design of the company’s all-new EB10000 generator. The DAVR functions to improve the output capability of the new model, holding the voltage stable within one percent over time during standard operation. The DAVR adjustments are driven off the main winding versus a sensor winding in conventional AVR systems, with a built-in temperature protection system. The DAVR configuration has a built-in self diagnosis function to prevent abnormal voltage and engine speed from exceeding 4,140 rpm for longer than three seconds.

A power coil is installed under the flywheel in order to provide a power supply for the DAVR

2. Describe how the i-Monitor digital operation system and other design elements contribute to ease of operation and maintenance on the all-new Honda EB10000 generator.

The Honda EB10000 generator is designed with the i-Monitor digital operation system (with lighting), displaying a number of alerts for the operator: total used hours, generating voltage (when error detected), battery condition, Oil Alert®, and an AVR (auto voltage regulator) error code, all of which improve understanding about service and maintenance activities. The operator can see, at a glance, the state of the conditions being monitored.

The Honda EB10000 generator also is designed with an easy-to-remove air cleaner and an oil gauge located near the oil filler cap – all elements that allow for ease of maintenance.

3. How does the Honda EB10000 generator achieve lowest operational noise in its class?

The Honda EB10000 generator operates at an extremely quiet noise level – at approximately 72 decibels at 23 feet (equivalent to the noise of a vacuum cleaner). This low noise level is achieved through a large muffler that includes a punching pipe, a perforated mechanism that allows for the smooth release of exhaust gas.

4. Detail the innovative design of the Honda EB10000. How does the footprint of the all-new model save space?

The Honda EB10000 generator is slim in profile and designed with a centralized control panel positioned on the model’s narrow end, contributing to ease of operation. The generator also is equipped with folding handles and larger wheels for easy transport.

The design of the Honda EB10000 also incorporates a clear distinction between its hot and cool operating parts. As the below diagram illustrates, the generator’s battery and control panel elements are positioned in the model’s cool zone.

Applications and Specifications

4. What are the primary applications for the all-new Honda EB10000 generator?

The EB10000 is well suited for industrial and commercial applications such as construction- related job site work. The generator is also a perfect fit for the rental market, where users demand the most reliable power for a variety of applications.

See the following page for detailed specifications on the new Honda EB10000 and how this all-new model compares to the other Honda EB Industrial Series models – (the EB4000, EB5000 and EB6500).
Honda EB10000 Industrial Series Generator General Overview

Generators: Honda Generators Background Information

Honda Power Equipment markets a complete line of generators for commercial and consumer applications. Lightweight, compact Honda generators produce between 1,000 and 10,000 watts of power, providing smooth, dependable power for recreation, construction, rental, and emergency use.

All Honda generators are powered by advanced Honda four-stroke engines that make Honda generators among the world’s quietest. Honda generators for typical residential use average 64-68 decibels with the Super Quiet Series operating at noise levels as low as 49 decibels – roughly the noise level in a private office.

Product Line

Honda produces 17 models in four generator lines:

The EB3000c, like all Honda generators, is powered by an advanced four-stroke engine — in this case the Honda GX200 overhead valve (OHV) commercial grade unit —that produce quiet power. Many Honda industrial generators are housed in tubular steel frames to minimize damage from transport or use.

Within the Honda Industrial Series generators category are four other EB models: the EB4000, EB5000, EB6500, and the all-new EB10000. Powered by Honda’s GX Series commercial grade OHV engines, and available in 4,000, 5,000, and 6,500 wattage output, the EB4000, EB5000, and EB6500 generators offer premium features and benefits at outstanding value.

In 2012, Honda introduces its EB10000 model, now the most powerful Honda generator and the company’s flagship model. The rugged Honda EB10000 generator, with a maximum output of 10,000 watts, is compact, lightweight and features a narrow-shaped design; a centralized exhaust mechanism; a newly developed alternator; and the best fuel efficiency and lowest noise in its class. The company’s newest model is well suited for industrial and commercial applications, including construction-related job site work. The EB10000 also is an ideal fit for the rental market, where users demand the most reliable power for a variety of applications. The all-new EB10000 is powered by the Honda GX630 V-Twin Engine, one that offers customers more power, adaptability, greater fuel economy and reduced emissions in a more compact package.

The entire Industrial Series incorporates a number of advanced design features, including Digital Automatic Voltage Regulator (DAVR) technology for increased performance. The DAVR holds the voltage stable within one percent over time during standard operation and has a built-in self-diagnosis function to prevent engine speed from exceeding 4,140 rpm for longer than three seconds and abnormal voltage. In addition, the DAVR adjustments are driven off the main winding, as compared to a sensor winding in conventional AVR systems.

Other Residential and Commercial Lines
In addition to its Industrial and Super Quiet models, Honda also manufactures four models in its Economy Series and four units in its Deluxe Series.

The Economy Series: A Closer Look
The Economy Series includes the EP2500CX, EG4000, EG5000, and EG6500 models – all reliable sources of no-frills power for home backup.

The Economy Series models incorporate a number of advanced design features, including Digital Automatic Voltage Regulator (DAVR) technology for increased performance. The DAVR holds the voltage stability within a +/– one percent change during operation again the U.S. standard of 60hZ. The DAVR adjustments are driven off the main winding, as compared to a sensor winding in conventional AVR systems. The DAVR has a built-in self-diagnosis function to prevent engine speed from exceeding 4140 rpm for longer than three seconds and abnormal voltage.

The EG4000 features the GX270 engine for increased power and versatility with greater fuel economy in the same envelope. It boasts a run time up to 9.4 hours at the rated load and a dB rating of 72. The EG5000, powered by the GX390 engine, has a run time of 7.5 hours under a rated load, and a dB rating of 73. The EG6500, equipped with the GX390 engine, boasts a run time of 7.1 hours and has a dB rating of 74. These models also are ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)-protected to meet OSHA jobsite regulations and offer longer run times, additional outlets for convenient use, and stronger, more durable frames. And, like all Honda generators, these models are equipped with circuit breakers for operator and equipment protection and USDA-qualified spark arrestor/mufflers for fire prevention.

The Deluxe Series: A Closer Look
Designed to enhance Honda's already strong value proposition is the Deluxe Series – ideal for convenient, reliable backup power during outages and brownouts. The EM4000, EM5000, and EM6500 generator models are available in 3,800, 5,000, and 6,500-watt sizes. These models feature electric start, remote start capability and exceptionally long run times on one tank of fuel. Also of important note is the i-Deluxe® inverter model – the EM5000is – an existing model that features inverter technology and electric start capability.

The EM models include the exclusive iAVR Power feature that enhances generator performance and power output. iAVR is a Honda Generator exclusive system that realizes a 50 percent reduction in voltage fluctuation over current AVR systems. For up to 10 seconds, the iAVR allows for increased wattage above the maximum rating to start high-amp load applications. Each model provides a different level of additional power output: the EM4000 will produce an additional 1000 watts for up to 10 seconds, the EM5000 will produce an additional 2000 watts for as much as 10 seconds and the EM6500 will produce an additional 500 watts for as long as 10 seconds.

A combination of factors creates the additional iAVR power in the EM generator line. They include the iGX Honda engine with Digital Capacitive Discharge Ignition (DCDI), Self-Tuning Regulator (STR) governor, and Current Transformer (CT) sensor coupled with the Digital Auto Voltage Regulator (DAVR) alternator.

Each EM unit is powered by a Honda iGX engine. The engine idle speed of each model is set to 2300 in the auto throttle on position with a maximum idle speed of 3600 rpm.

To meet the evaporative regulations, all of the models have a fluorine fuel tube and canister system along with a tethered chain-type gas cap. The models carry the Honda industry-competitive three year warranty.

Generators: Honda Power Equipment Launches Powerful Industrial Series Generator

At the 2012 World of Concrete trade venue, an international event dedicated to the commercial concrete and masonry construction industries, Honda today announced the launch of its all-new EB10000 Industrial Series generator, now the most powerful Honda generator and the company's flagship model.

The rugged Honda EB10000 generator, with a maximum output of 10,000 watts, is compact, lightweight and features a range of design innovations that contribute to exceptional performance. These include a narrow-shaped design; a centralized exhaust mechanism; a newly developed alternator; and the best fuel efficiency and lowest noise in its class. The company's newest model is well suited for industrial and commercial applications, including construction-related job site work. The EB10000 also is an ideal fit for the rental market, where users demand the most reliable power for a variety of applications.

Innovative Design Features

The new Digital Auto Voltage Regulator (DAVR) is an exclusive Honda feature integrated into the design of the company's all-new EB10000 generator. The DAVR functions to improve the output capability of the new model, holding the voltage stable within one percent over time during standard operation. The DAVR adjustments are driven off the main winding versus a sensor winding in conventional AVR systems, with a built-in temperature protection system. In addition, the DAVR configuration has a built-in self diagnosis function to prevent abnormal voltage and engine speed from exceeding 4,140 rpm for longer than three seconds. A power coil, installed under the flywheel, provides a power supply for the DAVR.

The technologically advanced design of the Honda EB10000 incorporates a patented frame design that clearly delineates its hot and cool operating parts. This configuration allows the generator's battery and control panel elements to be positioned in the model's cool zone.

The generator also includes the i-Monitor digital operation system (with lighting), by which the operator can see, at a glance, the state of the conditions being monitored: total used hours, generating voltage (when error detected), battery condition, Oil Alert®, and an AVR (auto voltage regulator) error code, all of which improve understanding about service and maintenance activities. The generator also has a one-touch, removable plastic top cover allowing for easy battery access and maintenance.

The new Honda Industrial Series model operates at an extremely quiet noise level – at approximately 72 decibels at 23 feet (equivalent to the noise of a vacuum cleaner). This low noise level is achieved through a large muffler that includes a punching pipe, a perforated mechanism that allows for the smooth release of exhaust gas.

A host of other features and benefits contribute to the exceptional performance of the all-new Honda EB10000 generator. These include:

New slim design, control panel positioned on the narrow side of the generator, a full frame, and full 8.2 gallon tank with fuel gauge design for added protection and longer run times.

Power via the Honda GX630 V-Twin Engine; Honda V-Twin engines offer customers more power, adaptability, greater fuel economy and reduced emissions in a more compact package.

New positive-lock, folding handle design, lifting eye and wheel kit (can operate over rough surfaces) for improved storing and mobility.

120/240 voltage selection switch allowing for total generator output through any of the 120 volt outlets (up to circuit protection maximum).

Newly designed fuel petcock/valve.

Easy-to-remove air cleaner; oil gauge located near the oil filler cap for ease of maintenance.

Full ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection across all outlets.

OSHA, LA-ETL, CARB, EPA Phase III and USDA compliant.

"Today, more than ever, industrial and commercial customers are focused on the purchase and operating costs, environmental operating attributes and sustainability of the products they buy. The all-new Honda EB10000 Industrial Series generator offers enhanced technological features, greater value and an environmentally advanced profile to address the primary factors influencing these purchase decisions," said Scott Conner, vice president, Honda Power Equipment. "Honda has had a long-standing commitment to produce products that are innovative and technologically advanced, and the new EB10000 offers just what consumers have come to expect from Honda Power Equipment."

The all-new Honda generator will be available at Honda Power Equipment dealers nationwide beginning in early summer 2012. The new Industrial Series model also carries the industry-competitive, Honda three-year warranty. Honda generators are characterized by the same clean, fuel-efficient technology that is behind the company's reputation for unparalleled durability, quality and reliability.

Editor's Note:

Generators: Honda EB6500 Industrial Portable Generator Earns Most Innovative Product Award

Rental Equipment Register (RER) magazine has named the Honda EB6500 industrial portable generator as a recipient of the prestigious 2011 Innovative Product Award. The EB6500 earned first place in the magazine's generators and welders category, selected by a panel of industry experts as displaying innovation in rental industry products.

The RER Innovative Product Award was established in 2003 to honor excellence in new product development in the equipment rental industry. The 2011 awards showcased the most innovative products introduced to the marketplace between August 1, 2010 and July 31, 2011.

Honda industrial generators have earned a leading reputation in the construction and rental industries for their rugged reliability and outstanding performance. In 2011, the company launched a newly expanded line of industrial generators that reinforces core focus areas of the Honda Power Equipment team: continuous improvement of technology and the integration of innovation into product offerings for customers in both residential and commercial sectors.

The EB6500 is well positioned to offer premium features and benefits at an outstanding value. Not only does the EB6500 incorporate Honda's intelligent and recently redesigned iGX engine, but power output has been increased as well. All Honda EB generators models incorporate the iAVR Power advantage - a Honda Generator exclusive system that realizes a 50 percent reduction in voltage fluctuation over current AVR systems. For up to ten seconds, the Honda iAVR allows for increased wattage above the maximum rating to start high-amp load applications. Specifically, the EB6500 will provide an output of up to 7,000 watts for up to 10 seconds.

A combination of factors creates the additional iAVR power in the EB generator line. They include the iGX Honda engine with Digital Capacitive Discharge Ignition (DCDI); Self-Tuning Regulator (STR) governor; and Current Transformer (CT) sensor coupled with the new Digital Auto Voltage Regulator (DAVR) alternator.

"Taking into account the advanced, innovative technological features integrated into the design of the Honda EB6500 generator, the model appeals to a wide range of consumers and industrial applications while meeting increasingly stringent environmental regulations," said Scott Conner, vice president, Honda Power Equipment. "The EB6500 specifically meets the rigorous needs of our rental customers while providing greater value, and Honda is both honored and pleased by this RER Magazine recognition."

Honda is the world's largest engine manufacturer, having sold more than 27 million units in 2010 across all of its global product lines. The company's generators are characterized by the same fuel-efficient technology that is behind the Honda reputation for unparalleled durability, quality and reliability.

Generators: Honda Power Equipment Launches Official NASCAR® Skinit® Kit Program

Honda Power Equipment is launching the official NASCAR® Skinit® Kit, an innovative accessory available exclusively for the popular Honda EU2000i Super Quiet Series portable generator. The new NASCAR® Skinit Kit consists of a line of thin, flexible generator covers, each imprinted with official race graphics from one of three exciting racing teams. These new kits follow last year's successful launch of the company's popular Collegiate Skinit Kit program.

The kits are produced by Skinit, a leader in on-demand personalization technology, and utilize the company's high quality 3M™ vinyl; each kit is printed using state-of-the-art digital presses – a process resulting in vibrant, photo-quality graphics. The Skinit Kits are designed to fit all Honda EU2000i models, with the choke, check oil, and on/off label integrated into the design. The skins, which do not interfere with the safety warning or serial number label, are easy to apply and remove and leave no residue. They are available at Honda Power Equipment dealers nationwide. Consumers can visit www.honda.skinit.com for more information on the skins, designs and ordering.

"The new NASCAR® Skinit Kits allow racing enthusiasts all over the country to proudly display their allegiance to their favorite race team while using their Honda EU2000i generators," said Rock Reed, assistant vice president, Honda Power Equipment. "Because Honda generators already are a big part of the race tailgating and camping experience, these kits will be right at home with race fans."

As increasing numbers of consumers are turning to fuel-efficient, portable generators for outdoor work and play, Honda generators can be found at racing events of all kinds, job sites, campsites, picnics, tailgating events and marina parties – powering fans, TVs, radios, blenders, coffee pots, small power tools and notebook computers.

Honda was inspired to introduce the NASCAR® Skinit Kit for EU2000i models as a result of the company's involvement in several racing-related sponsorship agreements. Honda Generators, the 'Official Generator' of the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama and the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Georgia, hosts an interactive display at each NASCAR® race to demonstrate its full line of generators to race attendees. In addition, Honda representatives are on hand at each venue to answer questions and provide support to the race teams, fans, vendors and campers that rely upon generator power at each race. A schedule of all racing events Honda Generators will be attending can be found by visiting http://www.hondapowerequipment.com/tradeshows.

The Honda EU2000i Super Quiet Series generator is an inverter-equipped, portable, lightweight model that features a totally enclosed body resulting in noticeably quieter performance. It provides up to 9.6 hours of running time on just 1.1 gallon of gasoline, and, with a dry weight of just 46 pounds, it can be easily carried and conveniently stored in small compartments. What's more, it can simultaneously power a computer, TV, coffee pot, and refrigerator.

The Honda official NASCAR® Skinit Kits for the EU2000i are available for the following three race teams:

JRM (Dale Earnhardt, Jr.)

Juan Pablo Montoya

Jamie McMurray

"We are thrilled to offer Honda generator owners a chance to show their racing spirit with NASCAR® inspired designs, along with Skinit's ability to infuse individual style to make their Honda generator unique," said Laura Christine, Executive Vice President of Skinit.

For more than 35 years, Honda generators, powered by Honda four-stroke engines, have set the industry standard for portable generators with the most extensive model selection for a variety of applications. Designed for the ultimate in quality, convenience, portability, quiet operation and fuel efficiency, Honda's recreational generators cover the full range of needs for any trip to the great outdoors.
