Headlines: Honda Power Equipment Earns Seven 2011 MarCom Awards

Honda Power Equipment, a division of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. has received a total of seven MarCom Awards for several of its computer-based dealer and distributor service training modules. Two business units of Honda Power Equipment - Honda Engines and Honda Marine - were recognized by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals for their comprehensive training programs and individual instructional sections.

Specifically, Honda Engines earned an overall Platinum MarCom Award for its Honda Engines Training and Certification System (TACS), along with specific recognition for two training modules offered within the system: 4-stroke engine theory and carburetor theory. Additionally, Honda Engines garnered a Gold MarCom statuette for its electrical fundamentals training module, while the company's basic emissions and DDiN navigation module were noted as receiving an honorable mention.

Honda Marine was awarded a Platinum MarCom for the outboard rigging curriculum offered to dealer technicians via the Honda Marine online technical training program.

Honda produced its unique online service training solution in conjunction with Irvine, California-based Pacific Technology Solutions (PTS). The training is used in Honda Engine and Honda Marine dealership and distributor facilities nationwide.

Administered and judged by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals, the MarCom Awards program recognizes outstanding creative achievement by industry professionals whose talent exceeds a high standard of excellence, and whose work serves as a benchmark for the industry. Winners are selected from more than 6,000 entries within 200 categories, covering seven forms of media and communication efforts, including: marketing; publications; promotions; public service/pro bono; creativity; and electronic/interactive.

Honda Power Equipment markets a complete line of generators for commercial and consumer applications. Lightweight, compact Honda generators produce between 1,000 and 10,000 watts of power, providing smooth, dependable power for recreation, construction, rental, and emergency use.

All Honda generators are powered by advanced Honda four-stroke engines that make Honda generators among the world’s quietest. Honda generators for typical residential use average 64-68 decibels with the Super Quiet Series operating at noise levels as low as 49 decibels – roughly the noise level in a private office.

Inverter Technology

Computers and sensitive electronic equipment require consistent electrical current that has a stable sine wave or signal. A computer not receiving this type of power could possibly freeze, shut down, or be interrupted.

To overcome this problem, Honda engineers developed a form of inverter technology, which also has allowed Honda to substantially reduce weight and noise. By eliminating the standard alternator, Honda’s inverter models weigh 50 percent less and are one-third smaller in size than traditional generators. The Eco Throttle™ feature allows the generator to conserve fuel by varying engine rpm to produce only the power required to operate the equipment, improving fuel economy up to 40 percent.

Honda’s innovative inverter technology is available on six models. Honda’s Super Quiet Series generators — the EU1000i, EU2000i, EU3000is and the EU3000i Handi — are inverter-equipped, lightweight models that feature a totally enclosed body resulting in noticeably quieter performance. Designed for the ultimate in quality, portability and convenience, these models are ideal for any trip to the great outdoors. All of the Honda Super Quiet generators have ultra low noise, making any of the models, depending on power requirements, the ideal choices for home backup, public events, or any situation where quiet, reliable operation is critical.

The 1000and 2000watt models(at 28.6 pounds and 46.3 pounds respectively) can easily be carried and conveniently stored in small recreational vehicle compartments. The 1000 wattmodel is the perfect solution for scenarios where less power is required – a great asset when all is needed is a quick battery charge to get things going. The 2000watt model can power a computer, TV, coffee pot, or refrigerator. These units both feature a two-tiered noise dampening system that reduces noise to 57 dB (quieter than normal speech) and 59 dB, respectively, at their rated loads.

For a bit more power, the compact 3000 watt model provides the smallest, quietest generator capable of starting and running most modern 13,500 BTU recreational vehicle (RV) air conditioners as well as powering additional appliances in an RV. This model also doubles as a home back-up unit to selectively power a furnace, refrigerator, microwave, TV, hair dryer, and several lights.

The EU3000i Handi model adds increased portability to the fuel efficiency and reliability of Honda’s existing EU3000is generator. The lightweight and extremely user-friendly EU3000i Handi provides customers with dependable, portable power for use at home or at remote recreational sites.

The EU3000i Handi also increases the breadth of the Honda EU generator Super Quiet Series lineup through enhancements in the areas of noise, size, usability and fuel consumption. Producing 3,000 volt amperes (VA) ― or watts ― of power, the EU3000i Handi meets a variety of power needs. The model’s ample power output, exceptional fuel efficiency and super quiet operation make it well suited to provide limited home backup power during a blackout or other power emergency, while its easy operation and extreme portability suit it equally well for a campsite, RV camping and tailgating activities.

For the ultimate in quiet, Honda offers the EU6500is in its Super Quiet line. Addressing customer demand for an even more powerful model — yet still portable and exceptionally quiet — the lightweight, low noise, compact and fuel efficient EU6500is generator leads the Honda EU Super Quiet class in high quality, portable power technology. At a total weight of 253 pounds, the EU6500is model produces 6,500 watts of continuous power at a quiet 60 dB, roughly the same as normal speech.

Honda also incorporates inverter technology into its EM5000isAB Deluxe Series generator. Featuring the i-Monitor™ that provides information on hours of operation, wattage, battery voltage and engine speed as well as diagnostics for convenient dealer servicing, the EM5000 model offers the advantage of quieter operation while providing reliable, stable power.

Honda CycloConverter™ Technology
Honda’s CycloConverter™ generator models offer power that is equal in quality to automatic voltage regulator (AVR) generators but dramatically lighter in weight than other units producing the same amount of power. This lighter weight is achieved by reducing the number of traditional parts with a central processing unit (CPU) that conditions the raw power produced by the generator and eliminates the need for a bulky alternator. Honda CycloConverter™ technology offers the best pound-per-watt ratio available anywhere.
This technology is used on Honda’s EB3000c Industrial Series model, which is intended for commercial and home uses and for residential standby power.

Advanced Power Solutions for Commercial and Rental Applications

The EB3000c, which features CycloConverter™ technology, is typical of Honda’s offerings for this market. Weighing only 68.4 lbs, it produces 2,600 watts of continuous power and will run for 9.39 hours at half load on a single tank of fuel. In addition to AC power from the CycloConverter™, this unit offers 12V DC at 12 amperes (A) (or 144 watts) for automotive-type battery charging.

The EB3000c, like all Honda generators, is powered by an advanced four-stroke engine — in this case the Honda GX200 overhead valve (OHV) commercial grade unit —that produce quiet power. Many Honda industrial generators are housed in tubular steel frames to minimize damage from transport or use.

Within the Honda Industrial Series generators category are four other EB models: the EB4000, EB5000, EB6500, and the all-new EB10000. Powered by Honda’s GX Series commercial grade OHV engines, and available in 4,000, 5,000, and 6,500 wattage output, the EB4000, EB5000, and EB6500 generators offer premium features and benefits at outstanding value.

In 2012, Honda introduces its EB10000 model, now the most powerful Honda generator and the company’s flagship model. The rugged Honda EB10000 generator, with a maximum output of 10,000 watts, is compact, lightweight and features a narrow-shaped design; a centralized exhaust mechanism; a newly developed alternator; and the best fuel efficiency and lowest noise in its class. The company’s newest model is well suited for industrial and commercial applications, including construction-related job site work. The EB10000 also is an ideal fit for the rental market, where users demand the most reliable power for a variety of applications. The all-new EB10000 is powered by the Honda GX630 V-Twin Engine, one that offers customers more power, adaptability, greater fuel economy and reduced emissions in a more compact package.

The entire Industrial Series incorporates a number of advanced design features, including Digital Automatic Voltage Regulator (DAVR) technology for increased performance. The DAVR holds the voltage stable within one percent over time during standard operation and has a built-in self-diagnosis function to prevent engine speed from exceeding 4,140 rpm for longer than three seconds and abnormal voltage. In addition, the DAVR adjustments are driven off the main winding, as compared to a sensor winding in conventional AVR systems.

Other Residential and Commercial Lines
In addition to its Industrial and Super Quiet models, Honda also manufactures four models in its Economy Series and four units in its Deluxe Series.

The Economy Series: A Closer Look
The Economy Series includes the EP2500CX, EG4000, EG5000, and EG6500 models – all reliable sources of no-frills power for home backup.

The Economy Series models incorporate a number of advanced design features, including Digital Automatic Voltage Regulator (DAVR) technology for increased performance. The DAVR holds the voltage stability within a +/– one percent change during operation again the U.S. standard of 60hZ. The DAVR adjustments are driven off the main winding, as compared to a sensor winding in conventional AVR systems. The DAVR has a built-in self-diagnosis function to prevent engine speed from exceeding 4140 rpm for longer than three seconds and abnormal voltage.

The EG4000 features the GX270 engine for increased power and versatility with greater fuel economy in the same envelope. It boasts a run time up to 9.4 hours at the rated load and a dB rating of 72. The EG5000, powered by the GX390 engine, has a run time of 7.5 hours under a rated load, and a dB rating of 73. The EG6500, equipped with the GX390 engine, boasts a run time of 7.1 hours and has a dB rating of 74. These models also are ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)-protected to meet OSHA jobsite regulations and offer longer run times, additional outlets for convenient use, and stronger, more durable frames. And, like all Honda generators, these models are equipped with circuit breakers for operator and equipment protection and USDA-qualified spark arrestor/mufflers for fire prevention.

The Deluxe Series: A Closer Look
Designed to enhance Honda's already strong value proposition is the Deluxe Series – ideal for convenient, reliable backup power during outages and brownouts. The EM4000, EM5000, and EM6500 generator models are available in 3,800, 5,000, and 6,500-watt sizes. These models feature electric start, remote start capability and exceptionally long run times on one tank of fuel. Also of important note is the i-Deluxe® inverter model – the EM5000is – an existing model that features inverter technology and electric start capability.

The EM models include the exclusive iAVR Power feature that enhances generator performance and power output. iAVR is a Honda Generator exclusive system that realizes a 50 percent reduction in voltage fluctuation over current AVR systems. For up to 10 seconds, the iAVR allows for increased wattage above the maximum rating to start high-amp load applications. Each model provides a different level of additional power output: the EM4000 will produce an additional 1000 watts for up to 10 seconds, the EM5000 will produce an additional 2000 watts for as much as 10 seconds and the EM6500 will produce an additional 500 watts for as long as 10 seconds.

A combination of factors creates the additional iAVR power in the EM generator line. They include the iGX Honda engine with Digital Capacitive Discharge Ignition (DCDI), Self-Tuning Regulator (STR) governor, and Current Transformer (CT) sensor coupled with the Digital Auto Voltage Regulator (DAVR) alternator.

Each EM unit is powered by a Honda iGX engine. The engine idle speed of each model is set to 2300 in the auto throttle on position with a maximum idle speed of 3600 rpm.

To meet the evaporative regulations, all of the models have a fluorine fuel tube and canister system along with a tethered chain-type gas cap. The models carry the Honda industry-competitive three year warranty.

Honda is the world's largest manufacturer of engines, producing and marketing approximately 27 million units globally in 2010 for a diverse array of automotive, motorcycle, marine, and power equipment products. Honda Engines offers a complete line of small, general purpose engines for commercial, rental industry, and consumer applications. Honda engines supply smooth and dependable power for more than 3,000 different product applications including pressure washers, lawnmowers, and rescue and construction equipment.

Additionally, Honda engines are some of the quietest and easiest to start of their kind, even in harsh commercial and construction environments. Such attributes have made Honda engines the popular choice for original equipment manufacturers looking to add value to their own brands.

One Engine for All

Honda continuously works to meet future, lower EPA and CARB standards regarding the performance of its products. In January 2007, Honda Engines began certifying its models to the new, lower California Air Resources Board (CARB) 2007 standards, existing EPA Phase 2 emission requirements and offering 50 state compliant engines. Investing in meeting the strictest of environmental requirements in the development of one engine for use in all 50 states reflects Honda's forward thinking on emission regulations, air quality and the needs of its customers. Moreover, Honda engines meet the new CARB exhaust and evaporative emissions requirements without the use of a catalytic converter.

As a result, the overall emission levels from Honda engines have been reduced by more than 32 percent compared to 1995. Further, the EPA implemented a new emission control program to reduce hydrocarbon emissions from small spark-ignition engines by approximately 35 percent. Honda engines are in compliance with the current EPA Phase 3 standards (for both exhaust and evaporate emissions).

Defining Net Power in Honda Engines

Actual power output for the engine installed in the final machine will vary depending on numerous factors, including the operation speed of the engine in application, environmental conditions, maintenance and other variables.

Product Line

Mini Four-Stroke Technology for Better Performance, Cleaner Air

The advanced design of Honda's mini-four stroke engines, including a cross-flow combustion chamber, provides a wide, smooth range of torque unique to four-stroke technology. State-of-the-art design and manufacturing techniques have reduced the number of moving parts. Many of these techniques have resulted in reduced engine weight and smoother operation for the end user.

The Honda GX35 mini four-stroke engine is Honda's most powerful engine for handheld applications. Based on the same Honda 360-degree-inclinable mini four-stroke technology as the GX25, the 35.8cc GX35 features an oil-immersed timing belt and overhead-cam (OHC) architecture.

Unlike many two-stroke competitors, the GX35 delivers powerful output across a wide range of operating speeds with ample low-speed torque, which means that it does not always need to be operated at wide open throttle. This reduces noise and operator fatigue while substantially increasing fuel economy.

Honda GC Series of Overhead Cam Engines

The GC Series is Honda's solution to the need for quiet, efficient engines specifically designed for home-use power equipment applications. Honda's innovative design features – including the world's first internal timing belt on an engine of this kind, a tough nylon overhead cam, and uniblock construction – make the engines lighter and more compact than other engines in their class with significantly reduced noise, fuel and oil consumption.

Combined with Honda's innovative DuaLube™ lubrication system, the result is a simple, sophisticated design that minimizes the number of parts and can reduce some potential maintenance needs.

The GC Series includes the GC160/GC190 (horizontal shaft) and the GCV160/GCV190 (vertical shaft) models. Honda GC Series engines are designed specifically for premium, high volume residential power equipment applications. Horizontal shaft models are ideal for a variety of consumer products, including pressure washers, water pumps, compressors, and portable generators. Vertical shaft models typically power devices like lawnmowers and pressure washers but also find applications in other residential uses.

Additionally, Honda also introduced electric start options on the GC/GCV160 and GC/GCV190 models, available nationally through Honda Engine distributors and to OEMs.

Honda GS Series of Overhead Cam Engines

The Honda GS Series is positioned squarely between the GC Series premium residential and the GX Series commercial engines.

The GS190 horizontal shaft and GSV190 vertical shaft models are designed to serve both premium residential and light-duty commercial markets. Intended for use on such popular applications as pumps, blowers, mowers, and tillers, these Honda models satisfy the homeowner seeking ultimate performance, and the contractor seeking a lightweight, compact package.

Capitalizing on the same basic OHC architecture as Honda's extremely popular GC engines, the GS features uniblock construction and a unique internal timing belt design that results in the lightest and most compact package in its class. With 187 cubic centimeters of displacement, this efficient design also delivers an unparalleled power-to-weight ratio with quiet operation, and easy starting.

To further enhance performance and durability, the Honda GS engines incorporate a cast iron cylinder sleeve and a redesigned piston with a three-piece oil control ring. Adding to the engine's commercial character, the GSV190 features ball bearings on the flywheel side of the crankshaft, while the GS190 utilizes ball bearings at both ends of the crankshaft. A dual stage air filter with an oiled pre-filter enhances engine performance in the dusty environment often created by mowing or tilling.

The Honda GS engines exemplify Honda's fundamental design philosophies of durability, quality, reliability, ease of starting and high fuel economy.

Honda GX Series of Overhead Valve Engines

The GX Series offers reliable, easy starting and fuel efficient power for a variety of commercial applications. Featuring four all-new larger models (GX240, GX270, GX340, and GX390) that were completely redesigned in 2010, these engines feature a rugged OHV design that ensures a high level of durability and reliability for construction, maintenance and premium power equipment and makes the engines ideal for the rental market. This market relies on Honda OHV engines to ensure customer satisfaction with a minimal level of maintenance and repair.

The new large GX engine models feature a host of technologies and design elements that allow for improved power output. The engines produce six percent more power than previous models, making them among the most powerful engines in each of their respective categories. This additional power is achieved via an advanced combustion chamber design, the implementation of Digital Capacitive Discharge Ignition (CDI) with variable ignition timing, and an increased compression ratio. Although fuel efficiency is a key attribute of all Honda engines, fuel consumption in the new GX family of engines has been significantly reduced. Large GX engines, for example, increase fuel efficiency by 12 percent. In addition to high fuel efficiency, the new GX engines meet current EPA exhaust emission regulations without the use of a catalyst.

Honda mid GX engines – the GX120, the GX160 and the GX200 – are single-cylinder, horizontal-shaft models that meet current EPA Phase 3 exhaust and evaporative emissions standards. These engines are an ideal fit for an array of commercial turf applications and equipment including generators; construction / industrial equipment; agricultural equipment; water pumps; and pressure washers. The mid GX models are equipped with a number of design enhancements, including a new carburetor chamber coating; a recoil rope design change; the addition of a carburetor filter; and an improved fuel tank guard – all of which improve their fuel economy, reliability and durability. Further, these engines, while having the same existing physical dimensions and power output of the models they replace, boast increased performance resulting, in part, from the incorporation of these innovative features:

improved fuel economy through changes in valve timing, compression ratio, carburetor settings, and cooling system modifications;
emissions standards met through changes in valve timing, carburetor settings, and other proprietary components;
low noise levels achieved via a change in muffler structure design, breather valve, push rod materials, and crank/case cover rigidity;
vibration reduction accomplished through use of a lighter engine piston.

Also part of the GX Series are the GX OHV V-Twin engines. The most powerful engines ever offered by Honda are designed to offer customers more power and adaptability with greater fuel economy in a more compact package. Six V-Twin models (GX/GXV630, GX/GXV660 and GX/GXV690) are available in both horizontal and vertical shaft configurations, are well-suited for light utility vehicles as well as commercial turf, construction and rental equipment applications. More specifically, Honda's V-Twin engines are designed for demanding, power-hungry, commercial applications including: commercial turf equipment (zero-turn radius mowers, lawn tractors, trenchers, stump grinders and chipper/shredders); construction equipment (concrete saws, vibratory rollers, ride-on cement trowels, and generators); additional applications include pressure washers and floor buffers.

The V-Twin features an advanced style that not only looks different from other engines in its class but provides increased functionality. The engine is more compact and offers more versatility for a greater breadth of product applications. A number of elements, including a hemispherical combustion chamber, an integrated cylinder and cylinder head, forged steel connecting rods, a 9.3:1 compression ratio, a digital CDI with variable ignition timing, and twin barrel inner-vent carburetion, contribute to an overall enhanced operation with remarkable fuel consumption and emissions performance.

Overall, Honda produces 20 models in the GX Series, which are available in either horizontal or vertical shaft and in either single cylinder or V-Twin versions. The single cylinder, horizontal shaft models — GXH50, GX100, GX120, GX160, GX200, GX240, GX270, GX340, and GX390 — power a variety of commercial equipment from small pumps and generators to cement mixers, pressure washers, trenchers, concrete saws and construction equipment. The single cylinder vertical shaft models — GXV50, GXV160, GXV340, and GXV390 — perform similar functions where a vertical shaft is required, such as in commercial lawnmowers, power turf equipment, and floor buffers.

The Honda iGX: An Intelligent General Purpose Engine

The Honda iGX is a revolutionary, intelligent, computer-controlled general purpose engine that sets an even higher standard for ease of use, fuel efficiency, and quiet operation. In 2010, Honda expanded its iGX Series with an all-new iGX340 and iGX390 engine. The iGX Series offers further enhancements to the GX series, incorporating an electronic self tuning regulator (STR) governor. Similar to GX, iGX engines are also (OHV) horizontal shaft engines, yet provide additional advanced technologies for more complex applications.

In addition, the iGX340 and 390 models feature an integrated electronic control unit (ECU) that delivers complete drive-by-wire remote control capability and controls key aspects of engine operation.

Benefiting both consumers and the environment, iGX technology results in lower fuel consumption and lower noise through reduced total engine running time and engine speed that can be lowered based on power demands. This intelligent technology works in conjunction with the engine's V-type valve layout and spark plug center combustion chamber to yield a fuel economy increase of approximately 15 percent compared to a similar conventional engine.

Additionally, the iGX is easier for users to operate, eliminating the need for manual manipulation of the choke and throttle and making it ideal for rental applications.

Manufacturing and R&D

Honda Power Equipment products are assembled at 11 Honda manufacturing facilities around the world, including Honda Power Equipment Mfg., Inc., located in Haw River, North Carolina. Research, development, and testing activities are conducted at Honda R&D Americas, Inc., also located in Haw River, North Carolina, and Honda R&D Co., Ltd., in Japan.

Overall, Honda Power Equipment Mfg., Inc. (HPE) has boosted the number of its general purpose engines produced per year for use by Honda and other OEMs. In addition to engines, HPE produces Honda generators, lawnmowers, snowblowers, pumps, tillers and string trimmers. Honda's North Carolina Research and Development Center is an 11,000 square foot facility established in 1993 that conducts product engineering, prototype development, and testing of power equipment products.

Rental Equipment Register (RER) magazine has named the Honda EB6500 industrial portable generator as a recipient of the prestigious 2011 Innovative Product Award. The EB6500 earned first place in the magazine's generators and welders category, selected by a panel of industry experts as displaying innovation in rental industry products.

Honda Power Equipment introduced today its first all-new hybrid snowblower model for the U.S. market and two new snowblower series to join the company's powerful lineup.

All-new for 2011 is the Honda HS1336i hybrid model, along with the new Honda HS928 Series (replacing existing HS928 snowblowers) and Honda HS1332 Series (replacing the existing HS1132 snowblowers). Available nationwide through Honda Power Equipment dealers, these snowblower models integrate a number of Honda-exclusive innovations that offer increased value and improved performance to consumers.

Honda HS1336i Hybrid Snowblower
The hybrid configuration of the all-new Honda HS1336i snowblower combines a gasoline engine that simultaneously drives the model's auger/fan apparatus (clearing and throwing the snow) and charges the battery, with the electric motors (two in parallel) controlling the track drive forward propulsion. These motors also function as a generator during deceleration of the snowblower - serving to regenerate electrical energy.

Equipped with the Honda iGX390 four-stroke overhead valve (OHV) horizontal shaft engine, the HS1336i snowblower operation results in lower fuel consumption, lower emissions, lower noise and reduced vibration as compared to a conventional snowblower. In addition, the iGX390 incorporates an improved inner muffler construction and has the best ignition timing for its class. Because the iGX390 is equipped with an auto choke (a choke that automatically controls the flow of air to the carburetor), starting operation is simplified, regardless of the atmospheric or engine temperature.

The all-new Honda HS1336i boasts superior control/ease-of-use; powerful operation/snow throwing; reliable operation; and enhanced technology. A host of design features speak to these attributes.

Operability

Turning on the spot. Two independent electric motors that control propulsion are positioned in parallel on the HS1336i. These two motors contribute to smooth turning of the snowblower when in operation. At low speeds, an operator can turn the HS1336i on the spot, and at high speeds, the snowblower can be turned smoothly on a curve.

External lever. The choke shaft of the Honda HS1336i hybrid snowblower can be easily operated - even when the carburetor is frozen - with a single press of the external lever.

Snow clearing mode. The Honda HS1336i hybrid snowblower is designed with a three-mode switching function that allows the operator to manage a variety of situations and conditions. The auto mode, power mode and manual mode options are available only on the new hybrid system (as compared to conventional models).

Reset mechanism for vertical movement of the auger. The auger feeds the snow to the high-speed impeller where the impeller blows the snow out of the machine. In the event that this feed is disrupted, the design of the Honda HS1336i hybrid allows the operator to reset the vertical movement of the auger so that it can revert to its normal position.

Rear cover. The rear cover is integrated with the tool box, allowing for an easy-access, wide opening through which the operator can pull out or put away any implement needed.

Ease of Function

Rolling function. Regardless of the gradient of the snow surface, the auger housing of the Honda HS1336i can be adjusted to slant up to seven degrees either to the right or left - resulting in the blower throwing snow to create a level surface.

Auger lift mechanism. When the operator of the Honda HS1336i hybrid snowblower puts the machine into reverse, the auger housing automatically moves up (to avoid getting caught in the snow). When the operator puts the snowblower back into forward gear, the auger housing automatically moves down (back into its previous operating position) and is ready to throw snow.

Toughness

Icing Guard. The Honda HS1336i hybrid snowblower is equipped with an icing guard that helps prevent the carburetor from freezing in cold temperatures. This is accomplished via an air guide that directs heat from the engine to warm the carburetor.

Self-diagnostic monitoring. The Honda HS1336i is designed with an easy-to-read diagnostic monitor that alerts the operator when a system failure occurs. Through either flashing or steady lights, the operator is made aware of a number of different conditions: motor failure, control failure, engine function, charging abnormality, voltage drop or low oil level.

Rounding out the design of the all-new Honda HS1336i hybrid snowblower are a number of key elements that combine for technically advanced operation. These features include:

2" taller handlebars, while still using existing cables, wires and controls

Honda HS1332 and Honda HS928 Series Snowblowers
Two important introductions to the Honda snowblowers lineup are the HS928 Series (HS928WA, HS928WAS, HS928TA and HS928TAS replacing the existing HS928 models) and the all-new HS1332 Series (HS1332TA and HS1332TAS replacing the existing HS1132 models).

Powered by a newly designed, high-torque Honda GX270 OHV engine, the HS928 Series is intended for aggressive snow clearing in demanding environments and is available in both wheel-driven and dual-track, self-propelled models. Its newly enhanced design enables a 28-inch clearing width and a discharge distance of up to 49 feet. The new HS928 also offers a choice of manual or electric starting.

Honda's solution for increased capability in a walk-behind machine is the new HS1332, clearing a 32-inch swath with its new commercial grade GX390 Honda four-stroke engine. The newly designed track-driven HS1332 can move 65 tons per hour at a discharge distance of up to 56 feet. Like the HS928, the HS1332 is available in both easy-starting manual or electric starter-equipped models.

Both new product families have improved performance over the models they replace, are eco-conscious, and are tough performers in the most extreme of environments. The advanced designs of each snowblower series can be illustrated via a discussion across the following categories: ease of work; operability; toughness; and noise reduction/fuel economy.

Ease of Work

Egg-shaped disk. When it comes to replacing the shear bolt on a snowblower, the design of the machine dictates the ease with which the part can be changed. On the all-new Honda HS1332 snowblower models, the design allows for a simple and easy shear bolt replacement. These Honda models are equipped with an egg-shaped disk that allows for almost effortless removal, alignment, and replacement of the shear bolt(s) when required.

Impeller. The new Honda HS928 and HS1332 snowblowers incorporate an improved design which serves to maximize snow-throwing distance and improve durability (over models they replace). In the new models, the shape of the impeller is modified to allow for these enhancements.

Impeller speed. In addition to snow-throwing distance being increased, operational noise also is reduced on the new HS928 and HS1332 snowblower models. These improvements are due, largely in part, to adjustments in ratio of both the engine-side pulley and impeller-side pulley.

Operability

2-ply rated tires. The new wheel-equipped Honda HS928 and HS1332 snowblower models have 2-ply rated (2 PR) tires with increased rigidity. This increased rigidity increases the overall stability of the body of the snowblowers.

Electric two-stage shooter. An electric two-stage shooter (controlled by an easy-to-use operating lever) on the new Honda HS928 and HS1332 models allows for better control of the direction snow is thrown. With the two-stage shooter, the direction of snow can be adjusted more widely.

Toughness

Sensor operation. When the auger gets caught in debris, a sensor detects the problem and the snowblower engine automatically stops. In conjunction with the operation of the shear bolt guard, the snowblower's limit switch (inside the auger transmission) detects when the auger is locked.

Icing guard. The Honda HS928 and HS1332 snowblowers are designed with an icing guard that prevents the carburetor from freezing in cold temperatures. This is accomplished via an air guide that directs heat from the engine to warm the carburetor.

Long-life skid. The new Honda HS928 and HS1332 snowblowers include long-life skids - devices that help avoid damage and keep the snowblower in smooth control over cracks and other uneven surfaces - as part of the improved design. On the new Honda snowblower models, the skid has been redesigned - incorporating a modified material and shape to improve durability and wear. For example, the skid can be switched upside down when certain areas get worn and the position of the skid can be changed depending on the snow quality (heavy snow vs. light snow).

Noise Reduction/Fuel Economy

Honda GX270 and GX390 commercial grade engines provide premium power for the Honda HS928 and HS1332 snowblowers, respectively - resulting in low noise, vibration, fuel consumption and emissions. More specifically, the low noise of the new HS928 and HS1332 snowblowers is attributed, in part, to the redesign of the inner construction of the muffler on the GX engines. Low vibration for the snowblowers is a result of the superior ignition timing for the GX270 and GX390 engines.

Honda's Global CO₂ Emissions Reduction Target

Honda has established 2020 CO2 emissions reduction targets to address the most important business management issues of climate change and energy issues.

Honda has been pursuing its own environmental targets and is committed to proactive environmental conservation activities. In 2006, Honda set a goal to reduce global CO2 emissions from use of its motorcycles, automobiles and power products by 10 percent by the end of 2010 compared to year 2000 levels. In 2010, the goal was attained by all products.

Honda now has set a target to reduce CO2 emissions from its global products by 30 percent by the end of 2020 compared to year 2000 levels. Defining Net Power in Honda Engines

The SAE J1349 standard measures net horsepower with the manufacturer's production muffler and air cleaner in place. Net horsepower more closely correlates with the power the operator will experience when using a Honda engine powered product. The power rating of the engines indicated in this document measures the net power output at 3600 rpm (7000 rpm for model GXH50, GXV50, GX25 and GX35) and net torque at 2500 rpm, as tested on a production engine. Choosing the Right Pump

Choosing the correctly sized pump for an application is equally as important as using the right type. One of the most important factors for consideration in making the right pump choice is the total head – a formula which equals the suction head plus the discharge head. Static suction head is the height from where the water (or other liquid) is drawn to the pump. Static discharge head is the height from the pump to the final destination of the liquid. Other factors that affect total dynamic head and discharge performance include hose diameter, length, material and sprinkler or nozzle use. The Honda HRX Series

Introduced in 2004, the Honda HRX Series pioneers the unique Versamow™ System that, for the first time on any lawnmower, easily enables simultaneous distribution of clippings to both the bag and the ground. Honda expanded the HRX Series in 2008 with the launch of the premium HRX217VKA. Equipped with the SMART Drive® Control, the HRX allows the user to easily control the lawnmower's speed simply by resting his or her hands on the handlebars - adding still more convenience and ease of use to what already is the most user-friendly 21-inch lawnmower on the market today. All HRX models are available nationally through Honda Power Equipment dealers.

The HRX models use the four-stroke, single-cylinder GCV190 OHC engine. The HRX electric start model, introduced in 2005, also features advanced Cyclon sealed lead-acid battery technology. The battery is mounted on the lawnmower's handlebar and integrated with a convenient automotive-style key switch. Depending on use, the battery should only require charging twice a year, delivering up to 300 starts on a single charge. Electricity is fed to a small starter motor incorporated in the GCV190 engine.

The Honda Versamow System™ has been designed to be a complete four-in-one mowing system delivering the ultimate in flexibility. A Clip Director® lever located behind the engine cowling operates a sliding door between the lawnmower deck and the grass bag allowing the operator to easily:

Rear discharge;
Mulch 100 percent of clippings;
Bag 100 percent of clippings;
Simultaneously mulch and bag or rear discharge in varying degrees through 10 separate settings.

The system also offers a setting for leaf shredding where leaves are re-circulated until they are small enough to pass into the bag. All this can take place without tools or attachments required on most conventional lawnmowers.

Targeting best-in-industry bagging performance, the HRX is able to mow 40 percent further before the bag is full, allowing the operator to empty the bag 40 percent less often. This is accomplished through the use of a 2.5 bushel grass bag, and Honda's MicroCut® offset twin-blade cutting system that results in finer clippings that pack the bag more efficiently. Redesigned from the ground up to be the best four-stroke tiller/cultivator for residential customers, Honda's FG110 tiller is the first of its kind to be specifically designed for the rigors of commercial and rental applications.

A number of advanced and robust design components make the new FG110 the ideal lightweight, personal and easy-to-use compact tiller. Consistent with the commercial and rental focus of Honda's entire tiller lineup, the Honda FG110 features a new commercial grade transmission with a heavy-duty drive gear that is 70 percent larger in diameter than previous models. A front engine guard minimizes the potential for damage during transport and doubles as a convenient carrying handle, while an increase in handlebar diameter from 3/4" to 7/8" adds additional strength. In addition, the FG110's innovative new hybrid tine design incorporates the attributes of both digging and cultivating tines, working with a high tine speed of 294 rpm. These exclusive tines also are backed by a limited lifetime warranty. The tiller is available with a variety of optional attachments including a border/edger, aerator tines, and a de-thatcher.

Powered by Honda's compact, quiet, and fuel-efficient GX25 four-stroke engine, the FG110 allows for the addition of heavy-duty commercial grade components without compromising the unit's overall portability.

Mid-Tine Tillers - F220 and FC600

Honda's mid-tine tillers are designed for medium and heavy-duty applications and feature Honda's largest tilling swaths (up to 26.4"). The mid-tine tillers offer clutch disengagement levers and transport wheels as standard equipment in addition to optional furrower attachments.

The F220 entry-level mid-tine tiller is powered by an extremely efficient four-stroke OHV engine driving a single-speed gear transmission and offers optional side disks. The model also features an adjustable depth bar for controlling tilling depth as well as a three-position handle.

A number of product improvements make the larger FC600 model an exclusively commercial-grade tiller ideal for commercial, rental and residential markets. The FRC800 offers three forward gears and reverse, and its Cyclone Air Filter allows for 600 percent longer service intervals.

Introduction
The Honda Portable Power System (HP²S) is the first portable home back-up system that provides automatic, uninterruptible and intelligent transfer of power during outages. The HP²S also features an innovative home security component that operates independently of power outages.

The system, which incorporates the UL 1008 UL Standard for Safety Transfer Switch Equipment, combines a Honda generator, a smart transfer switch and a battery back-up (or UPS). It was developed exclusively for Honda Power Equipment by American Power Conversion (APC), a leading provider of global, end-to-end AC and DC-based back-up power products and services, including surge suppressors, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), power conditioning equipment and power management software.

The System
The unique and versatile HP²S is an unprecedented technological advancement for residential power management. For the first time, a system is available to provide homeowners with a portable back-up power system that is easy to install and use and requires little interaction by the consumer when utility power is interrupted. And because the generator component of the system is portable, it can be used for recreational and other purposes away from the home.

The HP2S requires the installation of a unique, intelligent transfer switch by a certified electrician. The homeowner programs the HP²S transfer switch in advance, preselecting the appliances or electrical systems to be powered during an outage. When utility power is interrupted, the UPS maintains power to the pre-selected emergency systems (such as lights or garage door opener) while the homeowner turns on the generator. The Brain

The brain behind HP²S is the American Power Conversion Universal Transfer Switch (UTS). While conventional transfer switches distribute all available power across their connected systems, the HP2S UTS uses advanced load-shedding technology to draw from its Honda Generator power plant only the wattage required to power the pre-programmed systems. In addition, the UTS adjusts the generator's engine speed accordingly to maximize efficiency. Load shedding also allows the UTS to recognize systems requiring additional power at a given time, and to shut down any systems not immediately required by the operator. Ultimately, load shedding contributes to high generator fuel efficiency while minimizing system overloads.

The UTS is equipped with an intuitive, user-friendly set-up wizard that guides the user through initial setup and configuration of the appliances or circuits to be served by the HP²S.

Headlines: Honda Launches All-New Mid GX Engine Lineup

At the 2011 World of Concrete trade venue, an international event dedicated to the commercial concrete and masonry construction industries, Honda today announced the launch of its all-new mid GX engines line. Completely redesigned for 2011, the new GX120, the GX160 and the GX200 are single-cylinder, horizontal-shaft engines that replace the existing GX120, GX160 and GX200 models. The lineup is an ideal fit for an array of commercial turf applications and equipment including generators; construction/industrial equipment; agricultural equipment; water pumps; and pressure washers.

The new Honda mid GX engines, while being dimensionally equivalent and having the same power output of the models they replace, boast increased performance resulting, in part, from the incorporation of these innovative features:

improved fuel economy through changes in valve timing, compression ratio, carburetor settings, and cooling system modifications;

new, more stringent emissions standards met through changes in valve timing; carburetor settings; and other proprietary components;

low noise levels achieved via a change in muffler structure design, breather valve, push rod materials, and crank/case cover rigidity; reduced vibration accomplished through use of a lighter engine piston.

The new mid GX engines also are equipped with a number of design enhancements, including a new carburetor chamber coating; a recoil rope design change; the addition of a carburetor filter; and an improved fuel tank guard - all of which improve their fuel economy, reliability and durability.

"As a global environmental leader, Honda developed our new mid GX engines with technologically advanced features that contribute to lower emissions, lower noise, lower vibration and nearly 100 percent installation capability for OEMs in the commercial power equipment market," said Mike Rudolph, senior manager, Honda Engines. "Because the new engines essentially match the dimensions of the existing GX models they replace, original equipment manufacturers will not have to modify the designs of their commercial equipment."

A Closer Look at Emissions Standards in 2011 and Beyond

The new Honda GX120, GX160 and GX200 mid GX engines meet EPA Phase 3 exhaust and evaporative emissions standards - the most stringent emission regulations in the world. As background, the EPA has finalized a new emission control program to reduce hydrocarbon emissions from small spark-ignition engines by approximately 35 percent. These new exhaust emissions standards will take effect in 2011 or 2012, depending on the size of the engine. The final rule also includes new standards to reduce evaporative emissions from these fuel systems. Ultimately, these standards will serve to reduce the ozone and carbon monoxide levels produced by these engines.

The design configuration of the new Honda mid GX models reduces pollutants such as hydrocarbons (HCs) and nitrous oxide (NOx) while maintaining the same level of output power as the previous Honda GX models they replace. "The engines reduce HCs by reducing oil consumption via a redesigned piston shape and piston ring along with a modified carburetor setting. In addition, the engine designs reduce NOx emissions through an adjustment in ignition timing which reduces combustion temperature and pressure," explained Rudolph.

Reduction of Noise and Vibration and in the New Honda Mid GX Models

In the new mid range GX160 engines, the composition of the push rods has been changed from steel to aluminum. Because the cylinder heads also are constructed from aluminum, this design change equalizes the linear expansion coefficient (the ratio at which the length of the push rod changes from reaction to engine heat) of the push rods. This improvement reduces the valve clearance (caused by the thermal expansion of the push rods and the cylinders) which reduces the tappet noise. The new engines also exhibit three primary design enhancements that contribute to class-leading low noise operations. Enhancements to the muffler, the breather valve and the case cover (GX160/200 models only) result in lower noise levels:

Turning to the issue of vibration, any engine generates vibration through the reciprocal movement of the pistons. In the new mid GX models, the piston weight has been reduced and the crank weight has been adjusted according to the piston weight and connecting rod weight. As a result, the crankshaft rotates to counterbalance the reciprocal movement force of the pistons - reducing primary engine vibration.

Honda Power Equipment is raising the standard for portable generators, adding value and enhanced performance to three of its popular portable generator lines. The company invested three years of technology innovation into its research and development to reengineer three product lines, the Economy Series, the Deluxe Series and the Industrial Series. The result is a lineup of advanced generator models that meets and exceeds customer and consumer expectations while aligning the products with new environmental performance standards. The new models will be available in January 2011.

While each series of generators maintains its own product differentiation and includes advancements based on the company's analysis of its user segments and product applications, the entire product platform shares a number of common elements. These new advancements, including a Honda-developed and produced alternator for increased quality control, place Honda products at the forefront of generator technology. The products also meet EPA Phase III timing and guidelines, which address clean air standards for emissions from engines used in non-road applications. And, with these technology upgrades, Honda is producing 50-state compliant generator models.

Examining the Economy Series

The Economy Series, including the existing EP2500CX, the new EG4000 (replacing the EG3500), the redesigned EG5000 and the all-new EG6500 model, offers a reliable source of no-frills power for home backup. In its research, Honda learned that users of this popular Economy Series of EG models were interested in longer run times. As a result, the line incorporates a number of value-oriented features designed to provide this specific benefit, among others.

The entire series incorporates a number of advanced design features, including Digital Automatic Voltage Regulator (DAVR) technology for increased performance. The DAVR holds the voltage stability within a +/- one percent change during operation against the U.S. standard of 60hZ. The DAVR adjustments are driven off the main winding, as compared to a sensor winding in conventional AVR systems with a built-in temperature protection system. The DAVR has a built-in, self-diagnosis function to prevent engine speed from exceeding 4,140 rpm for longer than three seconds and abnormal voltage.

The new EG4000 features the new GX270 engine for increased power and versatility with greater fuel economy in the same envelope. It boasts a run time up to 9.4 hours at the rated load and a dB rating of 72. The EG5000, with the new GX390 engine, has a run time of 7.5 hours under a rated load, and a dB rating of 73. The EG6500 is equipped with the GX390 engine, boasts a run time of 7.1 hours and has a dB rating of 74.

A Closer Look at the Deluxe Series

The Deluxe Series for recreation, home, and farm applications is designed to offer features ideal for convenient, reliable backup power during outages and brownouts. The lineup includes the existing EM5000isAB model, along with three newly designed models - the EM4000, EM5000, and EM6500 - all packed with premium features and best-in-class benefits. Honda research showed that users of these generators wanted increased value, quieter operation, an overall lighter unit, improved wheels and a battery to be included with the purchase of models.

The EM models include the exclusive new iAVR Power feature that enhances generator performance and power output. iAVR is a Honda Generator exclusive system that realizes a 50 percent reduction in voltage fluctuation over current AVR systems. For up to 10 seconds, the iAVR allows for increased wattage above the maximum rating to start high-amp load applications. Each model provides a different level of additional power output: the EM4000 can produce up to an additional 1000 watts for up to 10 seconds; the EM5000 can produce an additional 2000 watts for as much as 10 seconds; and the EM6500 can produce an additional 500 watts for as long as 10 seconds.

Each EM unit also incorporates the newly designed iGX commercial engine. The engine idle speed of each model is set to 2,300 in auto throttle position with a maximum engine speed of 3,600 rpm.

To meet the EPA's evaporative emissions regulations, all of the models have a fluorine fuel tube and canister system along with a tethered chain-type gas cap. The models carry the Honda industry-competitive three year warranty.

Delving into the Industrial Series

The Honda Industrial Series is a product family that has earned a reputation for rugged reliability in the construction and rental industries. The models include the existing EB3000c, the new EB4000 (replacing the existing EB3500), a redesigned EB5000 and EB6500. Honda's research indicated that users of these generators wanted increased value, easier maintenance, better wheels and lighter, quieter models. These generators are positioned to offer premium features and benefits at outstanding value.

Each new EB unit is powered by the new iGX simple I platform engine, along with the all-new Honda exclusive iAVR Power advantage, a Honda Generator exclusive system that realizes a 50 percent reduction in voltage fluctuation over current AVR systems. For up to 10 seconds, the iAVR allows for increased wattage above the maximum rating to start high-amp load applications. The EB6500 includes the new iGX390 engine, boasts a run time of 7 hours at rated load and has a dB rating of 73.

Rental Equipment Register (RER) magazine has named the Honda EU3000i Handi portable generator as a recipient of the prestigious 2009 Innovative Product Award. The EU3000i Handi tied for first place in the magazine's generators and welders category, selected by RER editors as displaying innovation in rental industry products.

The RER Innovative Product Award was established in 2003 to honor excellence in new product development in the equipment rental industry. This year, the awards were given to the magazine's selections for the most innovative rental products introduced between August 1, 2008 and July 31, 2009.

Honda today introduced an all-new generation of its versatile and reliable GX and iGX series of general purpose engines at the 2010 World of Concrete show in Las Vegas. The new generation GX Series, Honda's legendary family of commercial grade engines, brings improvements in power, fuel efficiency, emissions performance and quiet operation to the already popular engine line.

Featuring four all-new models, the large GX engine line combines increased power and versatility with greater fuel economy in the same envelope. The new GX240, GX270, GX340 and GX390 engine models are overhead valve (OHV) horizontal shaft engines that offer users durable power for a wide range of demanding commercial, construction and rental applications.

In addition to the new GX series, Honda is expanding its iGX series with an all- new iGX340 and iGX390 engine. The iGX series offers further enhancements to the GX series, incorporating an electronic self tuning regulator (STR) governor. Similar to GX, iGX engines are also (OHV) horizontal shaft engines, yet provide additional advanced technologies for more complex applications.

"Our new GX and iGX series of engines have been redesigned to provide more power and excellent fuel efficiency while reducing emissions and noise," said Scott Conner, assistant vice president, Honda Engines. "The new GX and iGX bring an enhanced level of value and performance to our customers."

The new large GX series of engines features a host of technologies and design elements that allow for improved power output. The new GX models produce 6 percent more power than previous models, making them among the most powerful engines in each of their respective categories. This additional power is achieved via an advanced combustion chamber design, the implementation of Digital Capacitive Discharge Ignition (CDI) with variable ignition timing, and an increased compression ratio.

Along with improved power, the new GX series of engines provides a significant reduction in noise and vibration, which is vital to end users of both commercial and residential engine applications. Noise has been reduced up to 5 decibels, making the new GX one of the quietest engines available in its class. A new reed-style breather valve and a new muffler design also contribute to the engine's quiet operation, while a new light weight piston allows an optimized overbalance ratio for less operating vibration.

Although fuel efficiency is a key attribute of all Honda engines, fuel consumption in the new GX family of engines has been significantly improved for 2010. The new large GX engines increase fuel efficiency by 12 percent. In addition to increased fuel efficiency, the new GX engines will meet the 2011 EPA exhaust emission regulations without the use of a catalyst.

The all-new iGX engine series features an integrated electronic control unit (ECU) using Honda STR governor technology. A long life multi layer gradient density-type air filter extends the air cleaner maintenance interval by 50 percent. Premium features such as an electronically controlled governor, fully automatic choke and an automotive style electric starter are standard on the iGX series engines.

Potential new applications and attributes of this technology include:

pressure washers that automatically respond to the load when the user squeezes or releases the trigger handle;
water pumps that can be automatically activated by a remote switch based on water level;
generators that can automatically respond to load and adjust engine speed based on electrical draw.
drive-by-wire applications, including utility vehicles, scissor lifts, ride-on trowels and other remotely operated products.
