Honda and Climate Energy Micro-CHP System Earns 2006 Breakthrough Award from Popular Mechanics Magazine

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. and Climate Energy, LLC have earned a 2006 new product Breakthrough Award from Popular Mechanics magazine for their collaboration in producing the micro-sized combined heat and power system (Micro-CHP), a unique and innovative new form of heat and power technology.

Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Awards recognize revolutionary ideas and industry leaders in two groups: new products and technology innovators. This year, ten new products and ten leaders in innovation were honored with this prestigious award at a ceremony held on October 4 at the landmark Hearst Tower in New York City.

"The Breakthrough Awards represent the best in new thinking and technology, creating new ways to solve problems and meet challenges," said Popular Mechanics' Editor-in-Chief, James Meigs. "We honor those companies and visionaries that demonstrate significant strides in varied categories of innovation."

Climate Energy's Micro-CHP System combines today's proven space-heating technology with an MCHP engine/generator unit supplied by Honda. Climate Energy's residential combined heat and power technology achieves a combination of thermal comfort, energy efficiency, environmental benefit, and affordability that is well beyond anything yet achieved for residential energy systems. The ultra-quiet unit produces up to three kilowatts of thermal output and one kilowatt of electricity, allowing homeowners to reduce utility bills and curb carbon dioxide emissions while improving overall efficiency. Specifically, the complete system results in more than 85 percent efficiency in converting fuel energy into usable heat and electric power.

"We are truly honored to have received a Breakthrough Award from the editors of Popular Mechanics," said Steve Bailey, vice president of power equipment for American Honda. "Honda has an ongoing commitment to environmentally responsible technology, and our collaboration with Climate Energy allows us to continue to work towards that end."

Honda is the world's preeminent manufacturer of engines for automobiles, motorcycles and power equipment, selling more than 21 million units globally in 2005.
