Since its introduction, the FourTrax® Rincon® has remained at the top of its class--a direct result of its impressive technical credentials. Consider the Rincon's powerful 675cc engine, independent rear suspension, electronic fuel injection, Hondamatic automatic transmission, four-wheel disc brakes and more, and you begin to understand why many off-road adventurers consider this the ultimate ATV ride.

Features/Benefits

Features

Extensive weight-saving measures include the use of aluminum for the following components: forged front upper control arms, rear upper and lower control arms, rear knuckles, front and rear wheels.
Multi-function LCD digital instrumentation is compact, tough and waterproof, featuring large readouts for gear-selector position, speedometer, odometer, resettable tripmeter and hourmeter/clock. Instrument housing includes LEDs for Drive, Neutral, Reverse, temperature warning and FI warning indicator. A fuel gauge and low-fuel warning light located within the instrument housing comes as standard equipment.
Waterproof accessory socket provides 12-volt, 10-amp power with a built-in temperature-type fuse.
Thickly padded seat uses dual-density foam to provide all-day riding comfort.
Side-opening compartment has 4 liters of storage capacity and can be opened when the rider is seated.
Stainless-steel exhaust system includes a USDA-qualified spark arrester/muffler designed for quiet operation without wool packing for long-lasting performance.
Washable foam air filter for easy maintenance.

Engine/Drivetrain

Advanced-design Longitudinally Mounted Engine.
Four-valve cylinder head with two short pushrods provides a broad powerband for optimum performance and engine efficiency.
Camshaft is located adjacent to the cylinder head, reducing engine height. Together with the unique, semi-dry sump, engine height is further reduced for a low center of gravity and excellent handling.
Semi-dry-sump oiling system locates the oil tank inside the engine cases, lowering engine height and allowing optimum engine placement for excellent ground clearance and superb handling.
Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI).
The automotive-style Honda automatic transmission features a hydraulic torque converter, three hydraulic clutches and an Electronic Control Module (ECM) to automatically select one of three forward gears and one Reverse gear. The ECM monitors throttle opening, vehicle speed, engine rpm, gear selector position, brake application and engine oil temperature.
The compact and maintenance-free transmission design means there are no belts to wear out and replace. It also features a filtration system to protect against external contamination. By using this multi-filtered engine oil as hydraulic fluid, the design also simplifies maintenance and ensures an adequate oil supply in all operating conditions.

Torque-Sensitive Front Differential.
Electric Shift Program (ESP).
A handlebar-mounted control switches the automatic transmission between ESP mode and automatic operation.
A convenient column-style shift lever permits the rider to easily select Drive, Neutral or Reverse.

Chassis/Suspension

A rugged steel perimeter frame and four-wheel independent suspension provide an exceptional 10.0 inches of ground clearance.
Honda's independent rear suspension uses a double-wishbone design and features forged-aluminum knuckles and upper/lower A-arms to substantially reduce unsprung weight. The rear knuckle pivots use lightweight metal bushings in place of conventional ball joints and radius arms, eliminating geometry variations as the rear suspension travels through its stroke. This simple design maintains rear wheel alignment and further reduces unsprung weight, contributing to responsive overall handling.
Independent double-wishbone front suspension uses premium shock absorbers to provide 6.9 inches of suspension travel for a plush, comfortable ride.
Lightweight single-tube gas-charged rear shocks and an anti-sway bar provide plush, well-controlled damping throughout the Rincon's exceptional 8.0 inches of wheel travel.
Dual front disc-brake calipers feature a patented built-in scraper system. This helps prevent the buildup of debris between caliper and rim, ensuring consistent braking performance.
A rear center hydraulic disc brake and self-adjusting mechanical rear parking brake are mounted on the rear driveshaft, further reducing unsprung weight and contributing to the Rincon's considerable ground clearance.

Hondamatic Automatic Transmission

The automotive-style Honda automatic transmission features a hydraulic torque converter, three hydraulic clutches and an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) to automatically select one of three forward gears and one reverse gear. The ECU monitors throttle opening, vehicle speed, engine rpm, gear selector position, brake application and engine oil temperature.
The Honda automatic transmission shifts electronically-eliminating unsightly and trouble-prone vacuum lines-and features engine braking, unlike conventional belt-drive designs.
Features a filtration system to protect against external contamination. The compact and maintenance-free design means there are no belts to wear out and replace. Using multi-filtered engine oil as hydraulic fluid, the design also simplifies maintenance and ensures an adequate oil supply in all operating conditions.
Electric Shift Program (ESP™) (see Technology Section)
A handlebar-mounted control switches the automatic transmission between ESP mode and automatic operation.

Honda's independent rear suspension uses a double-wishbone design and features forged-aluminum knuckles and upper/lower A-arms to substantially reduce unsprung weight. The rear knuckle pivots use lightweight metal bushings in place of conventional ball joints and radius arms, eliminating geometry variations as the rear suspension travels through its stroke. This simple design maintains rear wheel alignment and further reduces unsprung weight, contributing to responsive overall handling.
Lightweight single-tube gas-charged rear shocks and an anti-sway bar provide plush, well-controlled damping throughout the Rincon's exceptional 8.0 inches of wheel travel.
Dual front disc brake calipers feature a patented built-in scraper system to remove mud and snow from inside the front wheel to help prevent buildup of debris between caliper and rim to ensure consistent braking performance.

Additional Features

Multi-function LCD digital instrumentation is compact, tough and waterproof, featuring large readouts for gear-selector position, speedometer, odometer, resettable tripmeter and hourmeter/clock. Instrument housing includes LEDs for Drive, Neutral, Reverse, temperature warning and FI warning indicator. A fuel gauge located within the instrument housing comes as standard equipment.
Waterproof accessory socket provides 12-volt, 10-amp power with a built-in temperature- type fuse.

Programmed Fuel Injection-- A Primer

Honda Programmed Fuel Injection was originally developed on road racing machines. Later it was applied to street bikes, including the exotic oval-piston NR750 sportbike. This system now appears on many Honda production street bikes, and this year makes its first appearance on a Honda ATV.

The essence of this system is the continuous use of several variables to control the injected-fuel quantity. Technically, the PGM-FI is an n-alpha mapped injection system, meaning that the basic variables are the engine speed (n) and the throttle angle (alpha). Based mainly on those measurements, the system looks upon its fuel map for the fuel delivery corresponding to the n and alpha of the moment. The computer then adjusts this fuel delivery according to four additional variables; airbox pressure, engine coolant temperature, intake air temperature and atmospheric pressure.

This process of recalculation of fuel delivery is repeated many times per second to ensure continuously correct mixture for conditions, and to provide optimal performance and remarkably crisp throttle response over a wide operating range.

History of Honda's PGM-FI development for motorcycles

More than 20 years ago, Honda began development of a fuel-injection system to constantly provide the optimum air/fuel ratio required by the engine using electronic control techniques. Since then, Honda has actively applied fuel injection to motorcycles as a technique to meet environmental, performance and high-level drivability targets.

In 1982, Honda marketed the first-in-the-world, fuel-injected motorcycle--the CX500TURBO--which attained both better acceleration performance than the CB900F and better fuel economy than the base-model CX500. In 1998, the environmentally friendly VFR800FI made its mark using Honda's PGM-FI and a newly developed three-way catalyst to meet stringent European exhaust emissions regulations. Today, PGM-FI development continues at the highest levels of competition on Honda's RC211V® MotoGP machine, allowing the immense power output of the RC211V to be better controlled by the rider.

In the late 1970s, Honda R&D was filled with enthusiasm toward attaining "core technologies that would lead to the development of new technologies in the 1980s." Through discussions on what should be the core technologies, turbocharging was chosen, and the CX500 was selected as the base model.

Honda defined the purpose of turbocharging not merely as a boost of extra power output from a large-displacement engine, but an increase of specific power from a small-displacement engine and an increase in thermal efficiency by reducing the frictional losses per output. Simply stated, it was to attain both an increase in power output and a reduction in energy loss. Most critical in the development were the turbocharger and the fuel-injection control systems.

One of the features of the CX500TURBO was the use of a computer-controlled fuel-injection system. Instead of using the then-conventional airflow meter, the computer-controlled fuel-injection system calculated the injection volume using the two control maps, i.e., one for the boost zone where the basic injection volume was determined by the engine revolutions and the boost pressure, and the other for the throttle zone where the basic injection volume was determined by the engine revolutions and the throttle opening. The actual injection volume was adjusted by the intake density compensation, the intake air pressure and/or intake air temperatures, the supplement for acceleration, warming up, starting, the compensation for battery voltage, and so on. Also incorporated in the computer-controlled fuel-injection system was a self-diagnosis function that activated the warning lamp and the backup system to keep the engine running when a failure occurred in the system.

RC211V-- fuel injection for superb drivability

Honda's RC211V MotoGP machine uses fully closed or partially opened throttle conditions way more frequently than the Formula One race cars, for example. Compared to the Formula One cars, which use fully opened throttle frequently, the controllability of the power output on the RC211V is more critical than the maximum power output.

Honda developed and applied new technologies to provide superb drivability for the PGM-FI used in the RC211V, including a twin-injector system, variable fuel pressure control and technology Honda calls "predictive control of residual injected fuel." When the RC211V throttle is fully opened or fully closed, the amount of fuel adhering to the inlet port walls and flowing into the combustion chamber during the following combustion cycle is predicted by the RC211V's electronic control unit (ECU), and calculated into the equation to ensure the most suitable air/fuel ratio for maximum drivability and fuel economy.

Honda's PGM-FI is one of the core technologies used to attain the goals of clean exhaust emissions, high fuel economy and performance. With the advent of fuel injection on the new Rincon, Honda has extended the application of PGM-FI from racing to street bikes, and into the ATV field where its benefits will be exposed to and enjoyed by a whole new segment of customers.

For 2006, Honda's flagship ATV, the FourTrax® Rincon®, takes on a whole new persona thanks to a wealth of improvements, including a larger engine with programmed fuel injection (PGM-FI), new chassis elements and new colors that include NaturalGear™ Camouflage.

Revolution on four wheels

In 2003, the Rincon broke new ground with more Honda firsts than any ATV in recent history. It boasted Honda's largest liquid-cooled four-stroke ATV engine, first automobile-style automatic ATV transmission, SUV-style radial Dunlop tires, a new rear center hydraulic disc brake system mounted on the rear propeller shaft and Honda's first fully independent rear suspension system. And that's just the short list. The Rincon also boasted Traxlok®, enabling riders to switch between 2WD and 4WD with a simple thumb-operated switch, Electric Shift Program (ESP®) that allows shifting by simply pushing buttons on the left handlebar and a torque-sensing front differential that reduces torque steer for lighter steering effort in 4WD.

The following year, Honda added a Rincon GPScape™ model, featuring a GPS unit contained within the standard meter assembly and featuring storage for up to 100 waypoints, digital compass function indicating travel direction and an automatic compensating clock.

Nothing else even came close to the Rincon's technical sophistication.

Bigger. And better.

Now, in 2006, the Rincon models take another great leap forward with an engine that grows in displacement from 649cc to 675cc, reflecting the new TRX®680F model designation. This boost comes by way of a larger bore in the single-cylinder powerplant, growing from 100mm to 102mm. Also, the cylinder is now of cast-sleeve design, which permits cylinder boring to an oversize of plus 0.25mm should the need ever occur. In addition, the Rincon now sports a new camshaft for added power, a new exhaust system to ensure quiet running, a rollover sensor that cuts engine power in the event the machine overturns, plus another Honda ATV first--a PGM-FI system with 40mm throttle body that replaces the carburetor used in previous Rincon.

These changes result in eight percent more torque at a higher rpm peak--up from 4500 rpm to 5000 rpm. Meanwhile, the horsepower peak remains at 6000 rpm, although peak power jumps approximately seven percent compared to the 2005 Rincon, changes that yield a higher top speed than before. More durable crankshaft bearings and beefed-up transmission gears ensure durability over the long haul with the Rincon's additional power.

PGM-FI makes the world a better place

The Rincon's PGM-FI system boasts a high-tech 12-hole split-pattern fuel injector to maximize fuel distribution to both intake valves. There's also a high-pressure fuel pump with a built-in reservoir to feed the system.

In general, fuel injection brings a wealth of smart-think benefits that can adjust to real-world variables in a seamless, automatic fashion--all of which makes the riding experience that much more enjoyable. In addition to increased power output, some of these other benefits include improved fuel consumption; the elimination of the choke circuitry for easy cold starting; automatic altitude compensation to 12,000 feet; automatic temperature compensation from -13^o to +104^o Fahrenheit; faster engine warm-up; and smoother idle control, thanks to the idle air control valve (IACV), which establishes a basic idle setting of 1400 rpm, plus or minus 50 rpm.

And to improve overall drivability, the Rincon's automotive-style torque converter also features improvements in 2006 that allow for faster warm-up to better accommodate cold-weather riding.

As would be expected, the shift from carburetion to PGM-FI dictates the deletion of a fuel petcock with a reserve setting. Now the PGM-FI-equipped Rincon incorporates a fuel gauge, and when the fuel level reaches the E symbol a low-fuel warning light begins to blink. At that point, about 1.1 gallons of fuel remain in the tank, enough for approximately 28 miles of reserve range.

More innovative thinking went into the Rincon's high-pressure fuel pump. For a fuel pump to provide consistent fuel delivery, it needs to be submerged in fuel. Other manufacturers place the pump in the main fuel tank, but this can reduce fuel capacity. For the Rincon, Honda designed a separate aluminum tank to house the fuel pump, mounted out of harm's way in front of the engine between the top shock towers. This allows the Rincon to maintain its fuel capacity. The sub tank also works as a trap for contaminants, and includes a drain in the tank to purge any particulates that worked their way into the system.

Battery capacity also has been increased significantly in 2006, from 14AH to 18AH, but if at some point the battery becomes discharged to the extent that the electric starter will not function, the Rincon still offers an auxiliary recoil starter, which incorporates an automatic internal decompression system for easier starting.

Tougher. And smarter.

For 2006, the Rincon also features a reusable urethane air filter that can be washed, unlike paper filters. Also, should the filter become immersed in water it can still be reused; paper filters, by comparison, are destroyed by water immersion.

This year the Rincon also gets new dual front disc brakes for added stopping power. These 180mm disc brakes feature Honda's self-centering collet-style brake calipers first introduced to the ATV line in 2005. These calipers also feature patented integrated scrapers to eliminate buildup of debris such as mud or ice.

In addition, new valving in the rear suspension make the Rincon more adept than ever when the going gets rough, and other enhancements make the shock action smoother in operation than in the previous unit as well.

A big difference that's hard to see

To top it all off, this year the Rincon sports a camouflage pattern, one scientifically designed by NaturalGear Camouflage. For riders who are looking for a machine with a highly effective camo pattern, this new option will certainly become a favorite.

Let's see: With more power, better drivability, improved rear suspension and stronger brakes, plus the option of camouflage bodywork, you could say Honda's flagship has only strengthened its grip at the top of the big-displacement ATV ranks.

Some lessons in camouflage are more easily learned than others. In the opening days of the first World War, the French infantry still embraced the spirit of fashion and dash evidenced by the pantalon rouge--their uniform consisted of red hat, red trousers and vivid blue jacket. The Germans, on the other hand, wore a much more practical Feldgrau--field gray--and were soon standing near the roads leading to Paris.

The science of camouflage is all about blending in with your environment. You wouldn't wear a suit and tie to a tractor pull, right? In the terrain where you ride your ATV, a more traditional form of camouflage is called for, one that lets you disappear among the trees, rocks and vegetation where you'll be riding. That's why this year Honda is pleased to offer the new Rincon in a new NaturalGear camouflage scheme, in addition to Honda Red and Olive Green.

Any freshly minted second lieutenant or savvy bowhunter can recite the factors of recognition that effective camouflage must address: position, shine, shadow, color, texture, outline, height, tone and location. NaturalGear, based in Little Rock, Arkansas, has a unique take on developing camouflage patterns. The company constructs its camouflage on seven natural laws.

First, the law of tone. Much camouflage is either too dark or too light, especially for the black-and-white range in which many animals see best. NaturalGear patterns are photographically derived, so its natural tone blends well.

Second is the law of gravity. Trees and other vegetation grow vertically, so NaturalGear patterns have a vertical orientation.

Third is the law of shadows. While other camouflage patterns add dark, "shadowed" areas which blob up, NaturalGear figures that shadows occur in nature, and that there's no need to add them.

Next is the law of the open. Too much camouflage yields to the temptation of adding and adding to the pattern. Sure, it looks great from a couple of feet away, but it turns into a single dark mass at distance. NaturalGear camouflage uses an open pattern to blend at a greater variety of ranges.

Some camouflage is highly specific, working well only in pine forests or the desert. NaturalGear embraces the law of versatility: Since it's not situation specific, it blends over a wide variety of outdoor areas.

Finally, there's the law of definition. Animals identify objects as threats by their shape or image, so NaturalGear has soft, blurry edges that are hard to focus on. This is part of the reason it doesn't feature the "sticks and leaves" details of other familiar camouflage patterns.

The new Honda FourTrax Rincon uses a thin-film application technique to print the camouflage pattern directly over the bodywork. It's an extremely durable process that bonds perfectly and leaves no wrinkles or bubbles. And because the bodywork's base color is a tan/beige, even if you do suffer a deep gouge, the camouflage effect isn't compromised.

Some riders note that the Rincon's fender lips and seat remain black. Honda's tests determined that these shapes don't compromise the overall camouflage in the least--in fact, they may help by breaking up the overall outline. Remember the factors of recognition: These undefined dark shapes are simply unrecognizable.

Effective camouflage is a total package. If you want your ATV to blend in, you've got to pay attention to all of the details. Don't skyline it; parking in the shadows and against an irregular background will work much better. And don't think that you'll be hiding from much if you're riding around with a big, red ice chest strapped to the rear rack. Another aspect to consider is the Rincon's acoustic camouflage--its fuel injected, liquid-cooled, four-stroke single with spark arrestor and snorkled intake won't spook game as you ease your way into your early morning position.

In fact, if there's any single drawback to the Rincon's new NaturalGear camouflage bodywork, it may be this: You'll have to pay close attention to where you do finally park, because the Rincon blends so well, you may have a tough time finding it when it's time for the ride out.

Honda's innovative Rincon boasts the only true automotive-style automatic transmission in the entire ATV world. Though it features several innovations that cater specifically to ATV application, the Rincon's torque converter operates in principle much like other torque converters. Basically, it links the engine to the automatic transmission much like a manual clutch connects an engine to a manual gearbox. Both systems drive the vehicle and they also come into play when the vehicle stops.

With a manual transmission, manual actuation of the clutch temporarily disengages the engine from the transmission when coming to a stop. In similar fashion, a torque converter performs this connect/disconnect function but automatically, as needed. Moreover, with a torque converter and automatic transmission, the rider need only release the throttle and operate the brake when stopping the vehicle.

A torque converter can accomplish this because it is a fluid coupling, rather than a solid coupling. At low engine speeds, the torque converter slips internally, which allows the engine to spin independently of the transmission. As a result, the engine of the stopped vehicle is allowed to run at idle while the transmission is in gear. When it's time to roll, the rider simply opens the throttle to increase engine speed, and the torque converter then transfers power to the transmission to make the vehicle move.

In the Rincon, the engine output shaft drives the torque converter's impeller, which uses fins to pump fluid--in this case, engine oil. As this fluid drives the vanes of the torque converter's turbine, the spinning turbine then powers the automatic transmission to propel the vehicle. The Rincon's automatic transmission employs three hydraulic clutches and an ECU that automatically selects one of three forward gears or reverse.
