Class-leading performance is provided by a water-cooled IHI turbocharger with water-cooled intercooler. The AquaTrax® R-12X turbocharger produces a maximum boost of 13 psi to generate 32 percent more power than a normally aspirated engine. The turbine bearing is an enclosed, ceramic-ball design that withstands sustained high-rpm compressor operation while providing nearly vibration- and friction-free performance. Water-cooling of the turbocharger housing maintains optimum turbine operating efficiency, while the water-cooled intercooler ensures a denser intake charge to provide maximum power and combustion efficiency. An electronic control unit (ECU) monitors boost pressure, engine speed, cylinder-head temperature and an engine knock sensor to manage an electronic wastegate valve that controls turbocharger boost, protecting vital engine components and maintaining long engine life.
Forged pistons and connecting rods are designed to withstand the rigors of turbocharging. The top piston-ring land is anodized, and a chrome-plated top ring further enhances durability.

Engine/Drivetrain

Lightweight, liquid-cooled, turbocharged DOHC 16-valve 1235cc dry-sump four-cylinder engine features a one-piece upper-crankcase/cylinder block engineered to withstand the rigors of marine duty. The inherently efficient, low-emissions four-stroke design consumes less fuel than a comparable two-stroke engine and meets all current CARB and EPA emissions standards.
Side-mounted cam chain and ultra-narrow cylinder-sleeve spacing reduce engine size and weight.
Crankshaft main bearings feature a micro-grooved bearing surface to improve oil retention and bearing durability as lateral loading occurs throughout a broad range of operating conditions.
DOHC-actuated valves use a simple, lightweight and direct cam-over-bucket design.
Four-valve cylinder-head design with a narrow 30-degree included valve angle creates a compact combustion chamber for optimum efficiency and power output at all rpm levels.
Silent-type cam chain reduces engine noise, while an automatic chain tensioner virtually eliminates maintenance.

Honda Ignition Control System (ICS) protects the engine from abnormal operating conditions.
Air-intake system features an intake port mounted centrally in the hull and a labyrinth airbox construction with paper air filter. Together they keep water out of the engine during normal operation and if the craft is accidentally overturned.
High-pressure programmed fuel injection (PGM-FI) delivers fuel at 43 psi to four injectors, each mounted in a 38mm throttle body. Fuel is delivered through four holes in each injector, producing a highly combustible air/fuel charge for maximum combustion efficiency and power.
The ECU provides two digital 3-D fuel-injection maps for each cylinder, creating the ideal fuel mixture and spark advance settings. A sophisticated throttle sensor and advanced fuel-injection mapping combine to produce smooth and linear throttle response, responding precisely to minor throttle and wastegate adjustments to maximize driveability, acceleration and drive pump performance.
A unique fast-idle system uses an electric stepping motor to maintain a stable idle speed when the engine is cold. An automatic fuel-enriching system is integrated into the PGM-FI module, eliminating the need for a manual choke.
Four waterproof, transistorized, direct-ignition coils integrate the spark plug cap and the high-tension lead to produce a high-voltage, long-duration spark, providing maximum performance at high engine-output levels.

Hull

Sponson design further contributes to the AquaTrax's low-speed maneuverability and high-speed stability, giving the two-passenger R-12X/R-12 an even more aggressive cornering character than the three-passenger models.
Ride plate designed for more agility and light feel.
Strong, lightweight, fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) hull and deck are joined and permanently sealed at the gunwale, providing the AquaTrax with a distinctive and attractive profile.
The liner-type FRP inner hull and encapsulated styrofoam increase hull rigidity more than 200 percent compared to a single-hull design.
The AquaTrax hull is designed to be a stable platform for mounting from deep water and to be easily uprighted in case of accidental overturn.
Footwell and rear-deck areas have an anti-slip surface to provide sure-footed comfort when mounting, operating and dismounting the AquaTrax.
Forward-located, large-capacity 16.6-gallon polyethylene fuel tank is attached to the hull with rubber-cushioned hold-down straps. A two-way valve is provided to control internal tank pressure and prevent water incursion or fuel leakage if the hull is accidentally overturned.
Storage is available in two sealed compartments, with a 5.2-gallon front storage box located under the front hood and a 0.6-gallon compartment located in front of the rider.

Additional Features

Honda's lever-style quick-trim system provides for lightning-quick bow-angle changes. The quick-trim system is cable-activated by pulling a lever mounted on the left handlebar which positions the nozzle instantly.
An ECU-controlled off-throttle steering system (OTS) is provided to help the AquaTrax turn in certain conditions when the handlebars are turned and the throttle is closed.
ICS senses low oil pressure and/or abnormally high coolant temperatures and acts to limit or shut off engine operation as necessary. If oil pressure drops below the optimum level, the ICS limits engine speed to 3000 rpm. Extremely low oil pressure stops the engine. If high coolant temperature is detected, a warning light and audible alarm are activated. ICS also shuts off the engine if the hull is accidentally overturned.
The AquaTrax's selectable Limit Mode provides a lower top-speed setting, ideal for beginning riders, borrowers and rental users. The system displays "Limit Mode" on the multifunction display when activated, and can be reset with push-button controls.
Electronic keyless ignition system (ID mode) allows operator to select from 999 possible identification numbers to effectively deter unauthorized use.
Waterproof instruments feature digital LCD for speed, trip distance, travel time (hours) and clock; LCD analog bar-graph display for engine speed and fuel level; and flashing LED indicator light and audible alarm for fuel level, battery voltage, coolant temperature, oil pressure and fuel injection.
Self-diagnosing ECU cycles at start-up and operates continuously during operation to provide immediate troubleshooting and warning functions.
Operational lanyard tethers the ignition button to the operator's wrist or personal flotation device (PFD) and stops the engine if the rider leaves the vessel.
The fully sealed fuel system is leak-free and vapor-free, eliminating the possibility of water contamination.

2 Passenger: Honda leads and listens: 2005 AquaTrax buyers get more

When Honda, the world's largest powersports manufacturer, first entered the personal watercraft (PWC) market in 2002, the message was loud and clear--their products would satisfy a growing demand for high-quality, high-performance, low-emission PWCs.

In its trademark style, Honda entered the market with a big splash. At a time when other PWC manufacturers were under intense pressure to lower emissions produced by their ubiquitous two-stroke engines, Honda introduced the world's first low-emissions four-stroke powered PWC. The normally-aspirated, family-sized three-person AquaTrax F-12 and turbocharged AquaTrax F-12X were immediate hits, testimony to Honda's comprehensive approach to building high-tech, well-integrated products. One year later, the two-person AquaTrax R-12 (non-turbo) and AquaTrax R-12X (turbo) were introduced, adding depth to Honda's growing watercraft line.

With each sale, Honda listened to customer input to determine what features were most important to PWC enthusiasts. Clearly, the four-stroke approach was spot-on. The engine's quiet, rider-friendly power was simple to manage and yet stout enough to easily tow a wake-boarder or skier. Honda's hull designs also hit a sweet spot, providing straight-line stability and comfort as well as quick-turning fun. But customers also wanted more--more convenience, more color choices and more power. For 2005, Honda has responded.

Honda's flagship F-12X is now available with GPScape, an innovative global positioning system (GPS). With the F-12X GPScape, riders can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing they no longer have to search for landmarks or struggle with locating favorite play areas. Up to 100 waypoints can be stored and easily viewed in the GPScape's LCD display, which is conveniently housed in the standard meter assembly. Riders can easily lock in their loading ramp location before departing, program in the coordinates of their destination, and load multiple points of interest throughout the day. GPScape does the rest, telling the rider the distance and direction to a reference point from their present location. Upon arrival, GPScape alerts the rider with a bright "star" display. The GPS unit even includes a digital compass with pinpoint accuracy that indicates travel direction once underway.

Another new feature of the 2005 F-12X GPScape is a standard rear reboarding step, a first for Honda. Especially handy in deep water when two or more people are riding, it allows a wakeboarder or skier to easily remount. The reboarding step is also available as an option on the standard F-12X and F-12.

Honda finished off the AquaTrax F-12X GPScape with two handsome color options: candy red with black and silver accents or gold with black and silver accents on a white upper body. Both versions have a black lower body. A raised chrome turbo emblem tells the watercraft world that this is Honda's top-of-the-line machine.

New colors grace the standard F-12X for 2005 as well. With the same black hull as its sibling, this version of the turbo model receives a stunning blue with silver and black accents on the white upper body and includes the raised chrome turbo emblem.

More power for the F-12

The big news for the normally-aspirated, 1235cc inline four-cylinder F-12 is more power. Specifically, the torquey engine gets a substantial boost in top-end performance. The retuned, higher-revving engine produces 137.5 bhp at 8000 rpm, an increase of 10 percent and 1000 rpm over last year's model. With changes to the intake and exhaust cam timing to improve power, the F-12 maintains its strong, manageable low-end performance for excellent towing operation. Double springs on the intake valves assure high-rpm durability. Complementing the increase in power is a lighter-weight AC generator for quicker throttle response.

A redesigned Solas 147mm jet pump matches the engine's improved power characteristics for optimum drivability. The new impeller features polished leading edges for enhanced durability at increased engine speeds. The F-12's color options for 2005 are bright blue with silver and black accents on a white upper deck or silver with red and black upper deck accents. Both versions have white hulls and feature brushed aluminum raised emblems.

New look for the R-series

Honda's R-series two-person AquaTrax models also have new color treatments for 2005. The R-12 is finished with a white hull and bright blue on the upper deck with silver and black accents. The R-12X comes with a black hull and two color options; bright blue with silver and black accents on the upper deck and silver with black and red upper deck accents. The normally-aspirated R-12 has a raised, brushed-aluminum emblem and the turbocharged R-12X has a raised, chromed turbo emblem.
Honda's entire AquaTrax line received numerous anti-corrosion enhancements for 2005. Every part of the engine and its components were examined, leading to significant changes such as new alumite treatments to the cylinder head and exhaust manifold for even better durability. Less obvious is the addition of a drain hole on the lower crankcase flange to siphon away corrosive water, and the painted oil line sleeves that minimize rust. No one sweats the details like Honda and it is this thoughtful attention that is the hallmark of Honda's legendary quality.

The result? By listening to its customers and constantly making improvements, the 2005 Honda AquaTrax models once again raise the industry standard for performance and quality in personal watercraft.

2 Passenger: Honda AquaTrax units aid search and rescue efforts

Since 2002, Honda AquaTrax personal watercraft (PWC) have been used by dozens of municipalities, marine research laboratories, and marine mammal rescue organizations throughout the country. When the City of Coronado, California received a Honda AquaTrax personal watercraft for their search and rescue efforts at Coronado Beach, Lifeguard Captain Sean Carey was enthused.

"The Honda AquaTrax will become an immediate part of our life saving operations," said Carey. "The AquaTrax has many benefits over traditional craft and it allows us to respond quickly to a life threatening situation." The Hondas were also treasured because of their quiet, low-emissions, four-stroke engines. "That's important because we have to operate daily in environmentally-sensitive areas," Carey said.

Lifeguards from the Los Angeles County Fire Department use their Hondas to patrol the 72 miles of coastline in the Santa Monica Bay. Veteran lifeguard Tom Seth related a story of the AquaTrax's utility in heavy surf at Manhattan Beach, as reported by the community newspaper, Easy Reader. "The surf carried up to 15-foot faces," he said. "That day only a handful of surfers attempted to go out." The rough waves caught two surfers unprepared. After riding his AquaTrax to the first surfer and confirming he was OK, Seth towed his rescue sled to the second surfer who was unable to escape the pounding surf and towed him to deeper water. "We didn't even take another wave," said Seth. "The speed of the PWC got us right out of there." Of the AquaTrax's versatility, he noted, "We've got a new a tool. Our department is able to take advantage of the capabilities of the personal watercraft to help protect lives."

In northern California, the sheriff's departments of Amador County, El Dorado County and Placer County use Honda AquaTrax units to patrol the many lakes and rivers popular with local recreationists. In an article published by the Amador Ledger Dispatch, Captain Glenn Humphries of the Amador County Sheriff's Office noted, "A good deal of the program is educational. They're a great tool for making contact with the public." The AquaTrax units bring officers in close proximity to boaters and other PWC users to provide safety advice and curb reckless behavior. "Basically, we're on them 10 hours a day," he said.

In Camas, Washington, the police department's Marine Patrol Unit uses their AquaTrax PWCs to monitor boating activity on Lacamas Lake, a popular recreation destination for Portland-Vancouver area residents. In a story published by The Columbian newspaper, police chief Don Chaney said that boaters have asked for safety patrols on the lake for years to stem illegal drinking, speeding, noise and reckless boating. He noted that residents have complimented the officers on their patrols. "Hopefully, the people will realize we're here and refrain from misbehaving."

Across the country along the Emerald Coast of northwest Florida, the South Walton Fire District is quite happy with their Honda AquaTrax units. "It's a good tool to have in rough environments when there're multiple people (being rescued)," said Fire Chief John Fitch to reporter Amy Leigh Womack with the Santa Rosa Daily News. Walton County's 27 miles of coastline include Santa Rosa Beach, Miramar Beach, Grayton Beach and Rosemary Beach; all four are heavily used by residents and tourists. Fitch noted, "The equipment is doing the work instead of the rescuers getting tired out."

Class-leading performance is provided by a water-cooled IHI® turbocharger with water-cooled intercooler. The AquaTrax™ R-12X™ turbocharger produces a maximum boost of 13 psi to generate 32 percent more power than a normally aspirated engine. The turbine bearing is an enclosed, ceramic-ball design that withstands sustained high-rpm compressor operation while providing nearly vibration- and friction-free performance. Water-cooling of the turbocharger housing maintains optimum turbine operating efficiency, while the water-cooled intercooler assures a denser intake charge to provide maximum power and combustion efficiency. An electronic control unit (ECU) monitors, boost pressure, engine speed, cylinder head temperature and an engine knock sensor to manage an electronic waste gate valve that controls turbocharger boost, protecting vital engine components and maintaining long engine life.

Engine/Drivetrain

Lightweight, liquid-cooled, DOHC 16-valve 1235cc dry-sump four-cylinder engine features a one-piece upper-crankcase/cylinder block engineered to withstand the rigors of marine duty. The inherently efficient, low-emissions four-stroke design consumes less fuel than a comparable two-stroke engine and meets all current CARB and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emissions standards.
Side-mounted cam chain and ultra-narrow cylinder-sleeve spacing reduce engine size and weight.

Air intake system features an intake port mounted centrally in the hull and a labyrinth airbox construction with paper air filter. Together they keep water out of the engine during normal operation and if the craft is accidentally overturned.
High-pressure programmed fuel injection (PGM-FI) delivers fuel at 43 psi to four injectors, each mounted in a 38mm throttle body. Fuel is delivered through four holes in each injector, producing a highly combustible air/fuel charge for maximum combustion efficiency and power.
The ECU provides two digital 3-D fuel injection maps for each cylinder, creating the ideal fuel mixture and spark advance settings. A sophisticated throttle sensor and advanced fuel injection mapping combine to produce smooth and linear throttle response, responding precisely to minor throttle and waste gate adjustments to maximize driveability, acceleration and drive pump performance.
A unique fast-idling system uses an electric stepping motor to maintain a stable idle speed when the engine is cold. An automatic fuel-enriching system is integrated into the PGM-FI module, eliminating the need for a manual choke.
Four waterproof transistorized direct-ignition coils integrate the spark plug cap and the high-tension lead to produce a high-voltage, long-duration spark, providing maximum performance at high engine-output levels.

Additional Features

Honda's lever-style quick trim system provides the fastest reaction of bow positioning with any production PWC. The quick trim system is cable-activated by pulling a lever mounted on the left handlebar, which activates a pull cable to a junction box where a push cable positions the nozzle instantly.
An ECU-controlled off-throttle steering system (OTS) is provided to help the AquaTrax turn in certain conditions when the handlebars are turned and the throttle is closed.
Honda Ignition Control System (ICS) senses low oil pressure and/or abnormally high coolant temperatures and acts to limit or shut off engine operation as necessary. If oil pressure drops below the optimum level, the ICS limits engine speed to 3000 rpm. Extremely low oil-pressure stops the engine. If high coolant temperature is detected, a warning light and audible alarm are activated. ICS also shuts off the engine after the hull is accidentally overturned.
The AquaTrax's selectable Limit Mode provides a lower top-speed setting, ideal for beginning riders, borrowers and rental users. The system displays "Limit Mode" on the multi-function display when activated, and can be reset with push-button controls.
Electronic keyless ignition system (ID mode) allows operator to select from 999 possible identification numbers to effectively deter unauthorized use.
Waterproof instruments feature LCD digital displays for speed, trip distance, travel time (hours) and clock; LCD analog bar graph display for engine speed and fuel level; flashing LED indicator light and audible alarm for fuel level, battery voltage, coolant temperature, oil pressure and fuel injection.
Self-diagnosing ECU cycles at start-up and operates continuously during operation to provide immediate troubleshooting and warning functions.
Operational lanyard tethers the ignition button to the operator's wrist or personal flotation device (PFD) and stops the engine if the rider leaves the vessel.
The fully sealed fuel system is leak-free and vapor-free, eliminating the possibility of water contamination.
Anti-corrosion treatments for die cast aluminum components include Alodine/Alumite chromate surface plating with an additional Superlac top-coat for exterior components, and epoxy-resin-based primer applied to coolant-exposed parts before Alodine/Alumite treatment.
