The all-time Champ Car victory leader among current drivers, Michael Andretti added to that number in 2002 with his 42nd open wheel racing win, scored at the Grand Prix of Long Beach.
This year, Andretti takes the reins as an owner/driver in the IRL IndyCar Series, heading his own three-car team with Honda power.
One of the first "second generation" IndyCar drivers, Andretti is the eldest son of racing legend Mario Andretti. After starting in Formula Fords at the age of 18, Andretti quickly moved up through the racing ranks, winning the Formula Atlantic title in 1983 and making his CART debut the same year.
Andretti's first Champ Car victory came at Long Beach in 1986. Forty-one more wins and the 1991 series championship followed as he won at least one race every season except for 1988 and 1993, when Andretti spent one year racing for Team McLaren in Formula One.
Joining the Team Green organization in 2001, Andretti enjoyed Honda power for the first time in his career. In addition to posting victories at Toronto in 2001 and Long Beach in 2002, Andretti returned to the Indianapolis 500, finishing a very competitive third in 2001 and seventh last year.
