Honda’s Georgia Transmission Plant Produces 5 Millionth Transmission

  • In preparation for Honda EV production in the U.S., Honda Transmission Plant-Georgia (TMP-G) is partnering with a Honda supplier, Hitachi Astemo Americas, Inc., to build e-axles, an essential component of EVs
  • TMP-G leads global production of the state-of-the-art 10-speed automatic transmission that powers a number of Acura and Honda vehicles

Associates at Honda Transmission Plant-Georgia (TMP-G) today celebrated a major milestone with production* of the 5 millionth automatic transmission since the plant began production in 2006.

Building on its success as a key global source of Honda automatic transmissions, TMP-G is also taking steps toward the electrified future by partnering with Honda supplier, Hitachi Astemo Americas, Inc., to install a new line to build e-axles, an essential component of electric vehicles (EVs). The e-axle combines the electric motor, gearing components and power electronics.

"This milestone is a testament to the dedication and skill of our Honda associates and their commitment to outstanding quality for our customers,” said Arturo Valdes, Manufacturing Division Lead, TMP-G. “Even as we continue to meet customer demand for Honda and Acura vehicles, the unwavering commitment of our associates is leading us to a new challenge in our electrified future."

Honda started transmission production in Georgia in 2006 with 179 associates. Now, with a total investment of more than $485 million, the operation has expanded to include more than 500 associates with the capacity to build 375,000 transmissions annually for various Acura and Honda models.

After beginning production of 5-speed automatic transmissions, TMP-G added 6-speed automatic transmissions in 2012. In 2017, the facility added a second assembly line to become the first Honda plant in the world to produce the advanced Honda 10-speed automatic transmission.
