Acura Introduces Its First Luxury SUV: The 1996 Acura SLX

Acura today announces the introduction of its first-ever luxury sport utility vehicle, the 1996 Acura SLX, marking the latest chapter in the company's mission to build the most comprehensive luxury import line in the United States.

The SLX combines Acura's renowned luxury, performance and prestige with the utility, all-weather handling and off-highway capability of a high-end, four-wheel-drive vehicle.

"Our new SLX represents an ideal blend of elegance and perfonnance," said Rich Thomas, Acura executive vice president and general manager. "It provides drivers with the comfort and perfonnance of a luxury sports sedan, yet is rugged and powerful enough to tackle the toughest off-highway challenges."

The SLX is powered by an all-aluminum 3.2-liter, 24-valve V-6 engine that produces 190 horsepower.

Its standard four-speed automatic transmission features a "power mode" for increased acceleration when necessary, and a "winter mode" that starts the vehicle in third gear for enhanced traction in slippery conditions. Converting the vehicle for off-highway use is made easy with the SLX's convenient shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive.

A double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension deliver smooth on-the-trail driving and comfortable highway response. Ventilated front and rear disc brakes and a four-wheel Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) are standard.

Not to be outdone by the SLX's performance is tasteful array of luxury features. Designed to provide driver and up to four passengers with spacious seating areas and a commanding view of the road, the SLX includes split fold-down rear seats for optimum flexibility in loading cargo and accommodating passengers.

Electronic cruise control, power windows and door locks, power moonroof, six-speaker AM/FM stereo cassette, air conditioning and a theft-deterrent system are all standard equipment.

The more lavishly appointed SLX with available premium package includes a leather-trimmed interior, power moonroof, heated from seats and wood grain trim.

As in all Acura models, safety features in the SLX are superior and include "crumple zones" and side-protection door beams to help absorb energy during impacts.

Dual Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) air bags are standard, as are three-point front and outboard rear primary seat belts. Interior surfaces and controls are also rounded to lessen the possibility of injury.

The Acura SLX also offers the high-end SUV buyer the true luxury ownership experience, including the Acura TLC Customer Satisfatction Program, which provides 24-hour road assistance, concierge service, trip planning and other benefits.
