Honda BF20 and BF15: The Ideal Combination of Power and Portability

At only 101 pounds, Honda Marine's BF20 and BF15 weigh less than some 9.9 horsepower motors on the market, making them the perfect portable power choices for inflatable yacht tenders, small fishing boats, pontoon boats, or as backup power on larger fishing or sail boats. Available Power Thrust design models offer enhanced maneuverability and performance in either fresh or salt water.

In addition to their light weight, the BF20 and BF15 are easy to maintain and transport. The engines' long-stroke design and 350 cc (21.5 cu. in.) displacement make them top performers by providing optimum torque throughout the rpm range. Additionally, an integrated carrying handle, easy one-hand starting and programmed ignition are offered as standard features.

Innovative Features

The BF20 and BF15 share a number of features and benefits that make them the most technologically advanced in their class. The 4-Stroke Engine Design combines proven reliability and superior fuel efficiency with no oil mixing. A microprocessor-controlled PGM Ignition accurately controls ignition timing during start-up and provide optimum performance across the entire rpm range while the Auto Start Enrichment feature automatically adjusts the air/fuel mixture for quick, easy starting. The BF15 and BF20 also are the only engines in their class to feature an integrated Engine Alert System that reduces rpm to protect the engine from damage due to low oil, over-revving, and overheating.

A Foldaway Carrying Handle is positioned at the exact top/bottom balance point of the BF20 and BF15 for enhanced portability and easy carrying. As with other Honda Marine engines, a Fresh Water Flushport flushes debris and saltwater out of the engine while the patented 4-Front Corrosion Protection System offers additional protection against corrosion caused by harsh marine environments.

For increased control and reduced steering effort, the BF20 and BF15 are designed with longer tiller handles made of a new lightweight composite for increased durability and weight reduction. Another unique lever design – the EZ Steer Friction Control – allows the operator to precisely adjust steering tension for improved comfort and control.

Finally, the Shallow Water Drive available on manual trim models greatly reduces the risk of engine damage when operating in shallow depths while Positive Lubrication ensures long-term durability of critical engine components.

A Closer Look at Power Thrust

The BF20 and BF15 are equipped with exclusive Power Thrust Design for enhanced performance and maneuverability. A low 2.33:1 gear ratio coupled with a 4-blade Power Thrust propeller produces more thrust in forward and reverse. Both engines also feature Reverse Exhaust Relief, an additional exhaust outlet above the anti-ventilation plate that allows the propeller to run in undisturbed water – ultimately resulting in greater thrust.

Honda Exclusive Design Elements

Both the BF20 and BF15 feature a number of Honda design exclusives, including:

  • At 21.5 cubic inches, the BF20 and BF15 models are among the largest displacement motors in their class;
  • Lightweight Design allows for easy transport and convenient mounting to the hull; the BF15 model is the lightest 4-stroke model in its class;
  • High Output Charging maintains the boat's battery charge and keeps electronics up and running, even at trolling speeds; both models have the largest alternators in their class;
  • Pendulum Mount System absorbs vibration to provide smooth operation;
  • 3 Stage Carburetion provides a smooth transition from idle to mid-range, as well as from mid-range to full throttle; conventional 2-circuit carburetors go directly from a lean mixture at idle to a rich setting at full throttle, which can sacrifice fuel economy.

The BF20 is available in both 20- and 15-inch shaft models, while the BF15 comes in 25, 20-, and 15-inch shaft lengths. All new Honda outboard engines sold for recreational use between May 1, 2007, and March 31, 2008, offer an industry-best True 5-year non-declining limited factory warranty that is the same on the last day as it is on the first.

Honda Marine pioneered 4-stroke engine technology, setting a new benchmark for fuel efficiency, quiet operation, and low emissions. Honda's outboards share the same unparalleled durability, quality, and reliability of its legendary automobiles. With models ranging from 2 to 225 horsepower, Honda Marine's full line of current production models meets rigorous California Air Resources Board (CARB) 3-Star standards, ensuring their availability and regulatory compliance in all 50 states.
