TORRANCE, Calif. – Sept. 12, 2012 – Honda will voluntarily recall approximately 5,200 Honda Genuine accessory trailer hitch wire harnesses that may have been installed on 2007 to 2011 model-year Element vehicles in the U.S. to inspect and, if necessary, repair the harness wiring. The wire harness may have been incorrectly assembled during production, which could cause an attached trailer’s turn signal lights to malfunction. If not working properly, the turn signal indicator lights would only function when the brakes have been applied. No crashes or injuries have been reported related to this issue.
Honda is announcing this recall to encourage owners of all 2007-2011 Elements in which the affected trailer hitch wire harnesses was installed to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda. Mailed notification to customers will begin in late-September 2012, and if a customer receiving a recall notice does not have a Honda Genuine accessory trailer hitch wire harness installed in their vehicle, they can return a supplied information card to advise Honda of that fact. In addition to contacting customers by mail, in late-September, owners of these vehicles will be able to determine if their vehicles require inspection by going on-line to www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (800) 999-1009, and selecting option 4.
