Honda On Top Again At Anaheim Two

Round five of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship Series made its way back to Anaheim, California. For a second time this season Honda riders battled for the top podium position in front of a nearly sold-out crowd at Angel Stadium. Honda had an impressive night with GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac taking his third consecutive win, and TwoTwo Motorsports/Honda rider Chad Reed riding his way to a third-place finish. Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Brayton also had an impressive night, finishing in fifth.

After struggling the last few weeks to get the finishes he desires, Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Brayton was able to put together a very noteworthy ride at Anaheim Two. Brayton set the tone for the day during qualifying by laying down the fastest lap time, giving him first gate pick heading into the heat races. In his heat race Brayton got a good start, making his way to the front of the pack. He lead throughout the majority of the race but was eventually passed on the last lap, leaving him with a second-place finish. In the main, Brayton was able to put together a solid ride from start to finish. When the gate dropped he grabbed third place out of the first turn and battled the entire 20 laps, finishing a respectable fifth place.

“The day went really great for me, starting with a successful practice, which was able to set the tempo for the rest of the night,” said Brayton. “After the last few weeks of not placing where I know I belong, it was a great step in the right direction. We have been working really hard, especially on my starts because that is key to having a great race. This weekend was a confidence booster for me, but more than anything it was a relief knowing that all my hard work is starting to pay off.”

TwoTwo Motorsports/Honda rider Chad Reed had another successful night, leaving with a third-place finish and second place in the points chase. In heat one Reed finished second, followed by Supercross.com/Honda rider Andrew Short. Reed, who battled flu symptoms all day, got a second-place start in the main but was eventually passed and had to settle for third.

“It was a rough week for me, with myself and family being sick,” said Reed. “Despite not being 100 percent, I am happy with my third-place finish because I fought as hard as I could for a podium. We are ready to move forward and go into the next round positive and ready to take back the points lead and that red plate.”

For the third week in a row GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac dominated the Lites class and will go into San Diego with a 22-point lead. Tomac nabbed the holeshot in the Lites main event but was quickly passed by Cole Seely with Troy Lee Designs/ Lucas Oil/ Honda racing. Seely led the pack until going down on lap three but was able to recover and stay in second place, where he would remain the rest of the race. Tomac quickly capitalized on the mistake, taking the lead and running away with it.

“The day started off a little slow with practice. I wasn’t exactly where I wanted to be so that gave me a little fire going into the heat race,” said Tomac. “Going into the next round it is definitely nice having those 22 points as a cushion. I am going to try and keep getting good starts and try not to make any mistakes throughout the rest of the rounds. I am looking forward to San Diego since it is where I got my first Supercross win and is the home to my favorite football team.”

Statement from American Honda Motor Co., Inc., regarding the resolution of the January 3rd small claims trial in Torrance, CA

American Honda intends to appeal the decision in Peters v. American Honda due to the substantial factual and legal errors reflected in the written decision.

We regret that Ms. Peters is unhappy with the reported mileage for her particular driving experience. However, it is clearly pointed out on the federally required window label that accompanied her car that mileage will vary depending upon a number of factors including options, driving conditions, driving habits and vehicle condition. Those factors affect gas mileage for every car on the road today, hybrid or not. American Honda's advertising regarding fuel economy of Civic Hybrids was accurate when the vehicles were sold and remains accurate today.

There are a number of points of disagreement with the ruling, but the court stated in error that advertising EPA fuel economy estimates is misleading unless the advertising also explains the effects of stop-and-go driving and the use of air conditioning. In fact, federal law does not permit states or state courts to impose additional requirements of this kind. Thus, a Honda advertisement that accurately referenced EPA mileage estimates, truthfully stated that a driver can get "up to 50 mpg" and carefully noted that mileage will vary is not misleading as a matter of law.

American Honda is proud of the fuel saving capability of the Honda Civic Hybrid and is grateful to the many hybrid owners who have written to let us know how pleased they have been in achieving 50 mpg or more in real world driving conditions. In fact, Honda presented evidence of those customer letters in court to help demonstrate the real world capability of the vehicle. Our customers should rest assured that Honda will continue to pursue cutting-edge technologies and strategies to enhance their ability to achieve high levels of fuel efficiency in all of our products.

In conclusion and with all due respect to the court, American Honda believes that the judgment in this case is a radical and unprecedented departure from California and federal law, and, as stated above, we intend to vigorously appeal this decision.

Statement by American Honda Regarding Side Curtain Airbag Recall: 2012 Accord and 2012 Crosstour

Honda will voluntarily recall certain model-year 2012 Accord and Crosstour vehicles in the U.S. to replace a side curtain airbag assembly. An incorrect propellant mixture was prepared when manufacturing the initiator component of the side-curtain airbag inflator. Use of the wrong initiator propellant may result in a failure of the pressurized gas that inflates the side-curtain airbag to be released from the airbag inflator, which in turn would cause non-deployment of the side curtain airbag during a crash. Honda has identified 347 vehicles affected by this problem, and is investigating whether other vehicles also may be equipped with an affected inflator. Honda expects to have all relevant information from its suppliers by February 8, 2012, and will identify any additional affected units by that time. Honda does not expect the total number of affected vehicles to exceed 1,000 units. No crashes or injuries have been reported related to this defect, which was identified during internal production testing by a supplier.

Honda is announcing this recall to encourage owners of all affected vehicles to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda. Mailed notification to customers will begin in early February 2012. In addition to contacting customers by mail, in early February, owners of these vehicles will be able to determine if their vehicles require inspection by going on-line to www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (800) 999-1009, and selecting option 4.

Honda Power Equipment Earns Seven 2011 MarCom Awards

Honda Power Equipment, a division of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. has received a total of seven MarCom Awards for several of its computer-based dealer and distributor service training modules. Two business units of Honda Power Equipment - Honda Engines and Honda Marine - were recognized by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals for their comprehensive training programs and individual instructional sections.

Specifically, Honda Engines earned an overall Platinum MarCom Award for its Honda Engines Training and Certification System (TACS), along with specific recognition for two training modules offered within the system: 4-stroke engine theory and carburetor theory. Additionally, Honda Engines garnered a Gold MarCom statuette for its electrical fundamentals training module, while the company's basic emissions and DDiN navigation module were noted as receiving an honorable mention.

Honda Marine was awarded a Platinum MarCom for the outboard rigging curriculum offered to dealer technicians via the Honda Marine online technical training program.

Honda produced its unique online service training solution in conjunction with Irvine, California-based Pacific Technology Solutions (PTS). The training is used in Honda Engine and Honda Marine dealership and distributor facilities nationwide.

Statement by American Honda Regarding Spare Tire/Tire Information Placard Recall: 2011-2012 Ridgeline

Honda will voluntarily recall 206 model-year 2011 and 2012 Ridgeline vehicles in the U.S. to inspect whether the factory-installed spare tire matches the spare tire information included on the FMVSS mandated tire information placard installed on the vehicles’ driver-side doorjambs. If the tire information placard and the installed spare tire do not match, Honda will either provide customers with a compact spare tire that matches the information included on the originally installed tire information placard or install a new placard that reflects the spare tire that was installed at the factory.

The Ridgeline sold in the United States normally is factory-equipped with a compact spare tire. In affected vehicles, a full-sized spare tire specified for certain export markets may have been mistakenly installed in the In-bed Trunk® during vehicle assembly. For these vehicles, the tire size and recommended cold inflation pressure for the installed (full-size) spare tire are not correctly displayed on the vehicle’s tire-information placard, and thus the tire-information placard does not comply with FMVSS requirements. No crashes or injuries have been reported.

Honda is announcing this recall to encourage owners of all affected vehicles to take their trucks to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda. Mailed notification to customers will begin in mid-February 2012. Acura Announces January Sales Increase; TL Up 43 Percent

Acura posted January sales of 8,381 an increase of 5.3 percent compared to January 2011.

"With inventory still building to optimal levels, 2012 is off to a good start," said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales. "After the successful launch of the RDX Prototype and the ILX and NSX Concepts at the Detroit Auto Show, strong January sales and the buzz surrounding Acura's Super Bowl commercial, the Acura brand has real momentum going forward."

Total car sales reported 4,582 units, up 24.1 percent versus January 2011, with the TL posting 2,283 units and the TSX 2,266 units, up 43.4 and 16.7 percent respectively. The MDX was Acura’s best selling model with 2,861 sales for the month, down 8.5 percent. Total truck sales tallied 3,799 units, down 11 percent.

American Honda Reports January Sales Increase; Civic Up Nearly 50 Percent

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., today reported January 2012 monthly new-vehicle sales of 83,009, an increase of 8.8 percent over January 2011. The Honda Division posted January 2012 sales of 74,628, an increase of 9.3 percent year-over-year.

In its first full month of sales, the all-new Honda CR-V set a January record with sales of 18,960, up 16.0 percent over last year's record-setting total of 16,339. The Civic also continued to build momentum with sales of 21,883, up an impressive 49.5 percent compared to January 2011. The Accord posted January sales of 13,659, up 1.5 percent from the same period last year. Honda's Ridgeline pickup posted its second consecutive month of double-digit sales growth, up 45.6 percent year-over-year to 1,245 units.

"Honda's return to full strength on the manufacturing front is already beginning to pay dividends on the sales floor," said John Mendel, American Honda executive vice president of sales. "On top of kicking off 2012 with record January sales for the new CR-V, it's gratifying to see how many Civics we can sell when we actually have Civics to sell. It's great to see customers embrace this great vehicle now that our dealers have enough cars on their lots."

The Acura Division's January sales totaled 8,381, up 5.3 percent compared to January 2011, with two models registering strong sales increases. Sales of the TL sedan reached 2,283, up 43.4 percent from the same period last year, while TSX sales totaled 2,266, a year-over-year increase of 16.7 percent.

Honda to Invest $98 Million in Anna Engine Plant for Production of Advanced Transmission Components

Honda announced today that it will invest $98 million at its Anna, Ohio engine plant as part of a strategy to build the company's next-generation powertrain technologies in Ohio. The move is aligned with a $120 million investment, announced last year, for the production of a new continuously variable transmission (CVT) in Russells Point, Ohio.

The Anna Engine Plant will manufacture high-tech pulley components for Honda's new CVT technology, which is part of the new Honda 'Earth Dreams' powertrain technology lineup, to be deployed for the first time in the U.S. in the all-new, more powerful and fuel-efficient 2013 Honda Accord.

Honda will produce its technically advanced CVT on a new assembly line at Honda Transmission Mfg. of America, Inc. in Russells Point. The modernization and expansion of the Russells Point transmission plant, along with the new pulley component production at the Anna plant, will create 150 new jobs.

Since November 2010, Honda has announced new investments exceeding $500 million in its two auto plants and two powertrain plants in Ohio.

"For decades, our two Ohio powertrain plants have worked together to deliver advanced products for our customers," said Hide Iwata, president and CEO, Honda of America Mfg., Inc. "The production of this new CVT technology puts the Buckeye State right in the middle of Honda's global strategy."

The new transmissions will debut in the all-new 2013 Honda Accord models that will come to market later this year. The Accord for the U.S. market is built only in Ohio at the Marysville Auto Plant.

"Applying Honda's new Earth Dreams Technologies in the production of engines and transmissions will greatly enhance the driving performance of Honda vehicles, and help us achieve fuel economy leadership in every segment over the next three years," said Iwata.

While the Anna plant prepares for its production launch, the nearby Russells Point transmission plant will proceed with CVT production this summer. These transmissions require highly sophisticated pulley components. Initially, these components will be supplied from Honda operations in Japan, before CVT production for U.S. models is taken up by the Anna plant in 2013.

"Our associates have incredible experience and we are counting on them to help us introduce an even higher level of powertrain technology for our customers," Anna Engine Plant Manager, John Spoltman, said. "The new CVT technology will be mated with Honda's new Earth Dreams 2.4-liter direct-injection engine, which will also be produced here at the Anna Engine Plant."

Earth Dreams technology defines Honda's next-generation engine and transmission strategy to realize advanced levels of both performance and fuel efficiency. Introduction of the new CVT for mid-size cars, will improve fuel economy by approximately 10 percent compared with the current five-speed automatic transmission.

The new component production operation at Anna will utilize 84,000 square feet of plant space for lathing, heat-treating, grinding and subassembly of precision CVT pulley systems. With the capacity to manufacture 1.18 million V-6 and four-cylinder engines annually, the Anna Engine Plant is the largest automobile engine factory in Honda's global production network.

At the Russells Point transmission plant, CVTs will be manufactured on a sophisticated assembly line that is being constructed as part of a $70 million, 200,000-square-foot expansion of the facility. An additional $50 million is being invested in a 75,000-square-foot expansion of the facility for additional aluminum casting operations to support the CVT assembly line.

Honda Transmission Mfg. of America currently employs 1,050 associates. In addition to automatic transmissions, the Russells Point plant also manufactures four-wheel-drive systems. Both plants manufacture the precision steel parts for engines and transmissions, and four-wheel-drive components.

Today's announcement continues a series of major initiatives by Honda in its Ohio operations. In January, the Acura luxury brand revealed that the all-new Acura NSX supercar will be developed in Ohio and built at a new manufacturing operation in central Ohio. And since November 2010, Honda has now announced more than $500 million in investments for advanced technologies and systems at it four existing Ohio plants.

Other major initiatives now underway include construction of on-site parts consolidation centers at Anna and East Liberty, a sophisticated new stamping press at the Marysville Auto Plant, and several major projects at East Liberty to expand assembly lines, implement new paint technologies and consolidate vehicle quality operations.

Production Versions of ILX and RDX Make World Debuts at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show

The production versions of the all-new Acura ILX and the completely redesigned Acura RDX will make their world debuts at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show, February 8, 2012, Acura announced today.

The 2013 Acura ILX luxury compact sedan is an all-new model positioned as the gateway to the Acura brand. Sleek and sporty, the ILX will feature three distinct powertrains, including Acura's first ever hybrid. The ILX will feature a high–quality, well-appointed interior that is smart and spacious. It will offer a number of new, high-value features including a standard Keyless Access System with smart entry and pushbutton start, along with Pandora® internet radio interface and SMS text message function for smart connectivity with the world.

The new 2013 RDX, Acura's compact crossover Sport Utility Vehicle, will offer a perfect balance of luxury and utility. Honda Riders Reed and Tomac Lead Points Chase After Round Four

Round four of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship series took place this weekend in Oakland, CA. The Oakland Coliseum, which usually serves as home to the Oakland Raiders and Oakland A's, was filled Saturday night with thousands of Supercross enthusiasts. It was another great week for Honda, with GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac winning the Lites class for a second week in a row. In the Supercross final, TwoTwo Motorsports rider Chad Reed also was on the podium for a third time this season, placing second.

Team Honda Muscle Milk's Justin Brayton came into Oakland looking for redemption after a tough round three in Los Angeles, and he looked fast throughout qualifying and the heat races. Unfortunately, when the gate dropped for the main Brayton got off to a mid-pack start heading into the first turn. The remainder of the 20 laps was spent in an admirable charge through the pack, which eventually netted him ninth place. Reed fared better in the main as he got the holeshot and led the pack for almost half the race until being passed by another rider. He continued to fight hard and rode a very solid race to finish second.

"The starts are so important," said Reed. "Hopefully we can keep building on these last couple weeks, keep getting the starts and accumulating those points." The CRF450R Honda rider is now tied for the points lead and will be running red plates going into Anaheim 2.

Andrew Short also had an impressive ride Saturday night aboard his Supercross.com/Honda CRF450R, putting together 20 consistent laps to finish in fifth place. GEICO Honda rider Kevin Windham showed impressive speed with a fourth place overall qualifying time in practice. He also put together a solid main by finishing in sixth place, right behind Short.

"The night was good, it was a nice rebound for me after Dodger Stadium," said Windham. "I spent most of the week focusing on trying to come out and get my job done after last weekend. I saw the whole thing with Trey and it was really difficult for me. It felt like I had a good heat and great times during the day and I am pleased with my finish but I am really looking to get GEICO Honda on the podium."

For the second week in a row the night belonged to GEICO Honda's Lites rider Eli Tomac. Heat two was stacked full of Honda riders with Cole Seely of Troy Lee Designs/ Lucas Oil/ Honda finishing in first, Tomac in second and Billy Laninovich in third. In the main event Tomac got a third-place start, followed by Seely in fourth. Tomac made his way to the front of the pack by lap three and after that he was untouchable, laying down incredible lap times. He quickly pulled away and took the checkered flag, making him the first rider in the 2012 season to win back-to-back races. He will be running the red leader's number plates once again in Anaheim. "After the front two guys made some pretty big mistakes, I wanted to make sure I stayed consistent once out front," said Tomac. "I didn't do anything crazy and was able to ride a solid race. I am excited, the red backgrounds look good on a Honda." Seely finished in 11th position after crashing in the beginning of the race and restarting almost last. His Troy Lee Designs teammate Travis Baker had a great ride, finishing sixth in the main.

Acura to Debut Super Bowl XLVI Commercial, First for the Brand

Acura, for the first time, will run a commercial during the Super Bowl championship game to capitalize on communicating with the more than 100 million viewers. Designed to strengthen Acura brand awareness and leverage Acura's announcement in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show earlier this month, a 60-second commercial featuring the iconic talent of Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno coupled with the highly anticipated NSX supercar concept will air during the third quarter.

"Acura has a specific plan in place across all communication channels to build off of the first round of product news announced at the North American International Auto Show. The response to the ILX, RDX and NSX supercar concept has been extremely positive," said Susie Rossick, Acura Brand Manager. "Our Super Bowl strategies are simple—build upon the buzz created in Detroit and leverage the excitement for the future return of the legendary NSX to the Acura lineup."

This commercial, "Transactions," depicts the over-the-top antics of two actual top car collectors, Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno, in an unrelenting bid to be the first in line to take delivery on the first Acura NSX.

"The goal is to present a commercial that not only clearly positions the NSX as the ultimate 'must have' sports car, but does it in a way that is memorable, entertaining and aligned with Acura's brand position," said John Hage, EVP/executive creative director at rp&, Acura's advertising agency of record.

The Super Bowl campaign includes a pre-game release of a 1-minute 50-second -extended version of "Transactions," PR initiatives, search, seeding and paid media placements. The commercial will be featured in Acura dealerships across the country. In addition, as the preferred vehicle of W Hotels, the commercial will be shown in-car on the MDX's rear-entertainment DVD screen during guest rides.

10th Anniversary Honda Battle of the Bands Marks Unforgettable Celebration of HBCU Marching Band Experience

An enthusiastic crowd of some 60,000 fans, students and alumni packed the Georgia Dome on Saturday to be part of the one-of-a-kind spectacle that is the Honda Battle of the Bands (HBOB) Invitational Showcase. The crowd was treated to a series of spectacular performances by eight of the nation's top marching bands from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), as well as an electrifying halftime performance by Grammy Award-winning R&B songstress Monica, as the Honda Battle of the Bands marked the 10th anniversary of its Invitational Showcase event.

The unparalleled pageantry, musicianship and camaraderie of the HBCU marching band experience and tradition was on full display, as the dynamic performances by: Albany State University, Bethune Cookman University, Jackson State University, Prairie View A&M University, South Carolina State University, Tennessee State University, Virginia State University and Winston-Salem State University brought to life the "Homecoming" theme of the 2012 Honda Battle of the Bands program.

Award-winning actor Matthew Broderick is starring in a fourth-quarter Super Bowl commercial to promote the all-new 2012 Honda CR-V.

"Matthew's Day Off" is part of an integrated, multiplatform advertising campaign that began earlier this month to support the launch of the all-new Honda CR-V. The campaign encourages the active, hip Gen-Y audience transitioning between their carefree twenties and their more focused thirties to conquer their aspirations by completing their own "Leap List."

The new four-cylinder, two-wheel-drive Honda Crosstour® is set to debut at U.S. dealers nationwide today with a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) ranging from $27,655 for the well-equipped Crosstour EX to $32,805 for the luxurious Crosstour EX-L Navi, plus a destination and handling charge of $810¹ per vehicle.

The four-cylinder Crosstour models join the current 3.5-liter i-VTEC V-6 Crosstour models already available. These units both feature a two-tiered noise dampening system that reduces noise to 57 dB (quieter than normal speech) and 59 dB, respectively, at their rated loads.

For a bit more power, the compact 3000 watt model provides the smallest, quietest generator capable of starting and running most modern 13,500 BTU recreational vehicle (RV) air conditioners as well as powering additional appliances in an RV. The Economy Series: A Closer Look
The Economy Series includes the EP2500CX, EG4000, EG5000, and EG6500 models – all reliable sources of no-frills power for home backup.

The Economy Series models incorporate a number of advanced design features, including Digital Automatic Voltage Regulator (DAVR) technology for increased performance. The DAVR holds the voltage stability within a +/– one percent change during operation again the U.S. standard of 60hZ. The DAVR adjustments are driven off the main winding, as compared to a sensor winding in conventional AVR systems. The DAVR has a built-in self-diagnosis function to prevent engine speed from exceeding 4140 rpm for longer than three seconds and abnormal voltage.

The EG4000 features the GX270 engine for increased power and versatility with greater fuel economy in the same envelope. It boasts a run time up to 9.4 hours at the rated load and a dB rating of 72. The EG5000, powered by the GX390 engine, has a run time of 7.5 hours under a rated load, and a dB rating of 73. The EG6500, equipped with the GX390 engine, boasts a run time of 7.1 hours and has a dB rating of 74. These models also are ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)-protected to meet OSHA jobsite regulations and offer longer run times, additional outlets for convenient use, and stronger, more durable frames. And, like all Honda generators, these models are equipped with circuit breakers for operator and equipment protection and USDA-qualified spark arrestor/mufflers for fire prevention.

The Deluxe Series: A Closer Look
Designed to enhance Honda's already strong value proposition is the Deluxe Series – ideal for convenient, reliable backup power during outages and brownouts. The EM4000, EM5000, and EM6500 generator models are available in 3,800, 5,000, and 6,500-watt sizes. These models feature electric start, remote start capability and exceptionally long run times on one tank of fuel. Also of important note is the i-Deluxe® inverter model – the EM5000is – an existing model that features inverter technology and electric start capability.

The EM models include the exclusive iAVR Power feature that enhances generator performance and power output. iAVR is a Honda Generator exclusive system that realizes a 50 percent reduction in voltage fluctuation over current AVR systems. For up to 10 seconds, the iAVR allows for increased wattage above the maximum rating to start high-amp load applications. Each model provides a different level of additional power output: the EM4000 will produce an additional 1000 watts for up to 10 seconds, the EM5000 will produce an additional 2000 watts for as much as 10 seconds and the EM6500 will produce an additional 500 watts for as long as 10 seconds.

A combination of factors creates the additional iAVR power in the EM generator line. They include the iGX Honda engine with Digital Capacitive Discharge Ignition (DCDI), Self-Tuning Regulator (STR) governor, and Current Transformer (CT) sensor coupled with the Digital Auto Voltage Regulator (DAVR) alternator.

Each EM unit is powered by a Honda iGX engine. The engine idle speed of each model is set to 2300 in the auto throttle on position with a maximum idle speed of 3600 rpm.

To meet the evaporative regulations, all of the models have a fluorine fuel tube and canister system along with a tethered chain-type gas cap. The models carry the Honda industry-competitive three year warranty.

Honda to Power Dale Coyne Racing in 2012

American Honda and its Honda Performance Development (HPD) subsidiary will power a two-car effort from Dale Coyne Racing in the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series, HPD and the team announced today.

Under terms of the agreement, HPD will provide its new, turbocharged 2.2-liter Honda Indy V-6 engines to all Coyne entries in the IZOD IndyCar Series and at the Indianapolis 500.

"Dale Coyne Racing has been one of IndyCar's most durable teams, with a history that extends for nearly 30 years." said Erik Berkman, president of Honda Performance Development and vice president, corporate planning and logistics, for American Honda. "It's great to have them racing with us in 2012. Dale's team has made great strides in recent seasons, and he has made moves this off-season to further improve. We're looking forward to continuing our association with him in 2012."

Designed at HPD's Santa Clarita, California, facility, the all-new Honda Indy V-6 engine is now being tested on the race track. Dale Coyne Racing joins Chip Ganassi Racing - winner of the last four IndyCar drivers' championships - A.J. Foyt Racing, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing and Sam Schmidt Motorsports as Honda-powered teams in 2012.

"We have felt a part of the Honda family from their first days in CART back in the early 1990s till today," commented DCR team owner Dale Coyne. "We are very pleased to enter this next stage of IndyCar history with a company so dedicated to winning and rich in successful motorsports heritage like Honda. Honda has been a fixture in North American open-wheel racing since 1994, and has played an active role in the growth of the IZOD IndyCar Series - as both a Manufacturers' Championship competitor and single engine supplier - since joining the series in 2003.

The company scored its first Indianapolis 500 victory in 2004 with Buddy Rice; Manufacturers' Championships in 2004 and '05; and became engine supplier to the entire IZOD IndyCar Series in 2006.

Honda has supplied racing engines to the full, 33-car Indianapolis 500 field every year since 2006, and for a record-six consecutive years, the ‘500' has not seen a single engine failure. Honda's Cumulative Worldwide Hybrid Vehicle Sales Reaches 800,000 Units

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced that Honda's cumulative worldwide hybrid vehicle sales surpassed 800,000 units as of the end of December 2011. This milestone was reached 12 years and two months after the start of sales of the first generation Honda Insight in Japan in November 1999.

Honda introduced the first-generation Insight, Civic Hybrid and Accord Hybrid equipped with Honda's original lightweight and compact Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system. More recently, following the introduction of the second-generation Insight in 2009, Honda has introduced a total of six new hybrid models in the last three years to expand the hybrid vehicle lineup and sales. Honda's annual worldwide hybrid sales for 2011 was approximately 200,000 units (up 30 percent compared to 2010), and Honda's total hybrid sales during the last three years exceeded 500,000 units. In Japan, the ratio of hybrid vehicles exceeded 45 percent of all new Honda vehicle registrations for the month of December 2011. Cumulative hybrid sales in North America reached 338,872 units as of December 2011.

As of today, Honda sells seven hybrid models in approximately 50 countries around the world. In addition, the market introduction of the ILX, the first Acura brand model equipped with a hybrid system, is scheduled for spring 2012 in North America.

Under the global environmental slogan of "Blue Skies for Our Children," Honda will continue its efforts to realize the further market penetration of hybrid vehicles to create a low carbon society.

Honda Introduces All-New Spline Shaft V-Twin Engines Models

Honda introduced today all-new spline shaft models of its popular and durable V-Twin general purpose engine. The new spline shaft brings an increased ease of assembly and connection with a more compact design for V-Twin engine users working with hydraulic power pump industrial products.

Offered in horizontal engine configurations, the new spline shaft V-Twin engine models will offer construction customers more flexibility to efficiently install engines directly to a variety of diverse applications. The Honda GX630 and GX690 V-Twin engines will feature this new shaft; these models are an excellent fit for commercial, rental and turf applications that include pumps, such as vibratory rollers, trenchers and other hydraulic power pump machines.

"Our new spline shaft V-Twin models have been designed to offer another engine configuration for construction product manufacturers to easily integrate into their own products," said Mike Rudolph, senior manager, Honda Engines. All Honda V-Twin models feature a cutting-edge style and a 36 blade low noise resin cooling fan to improve cooling efficiency. Under the multi-faceted styling are technologically-advanced features contributing to the high efficiency and low noise and vibration. Examples of these technologically advanced features are the hemispherical combustion chamber design, higher compression ratio, increased displacement, and steel connecting rods. Additionally, an integrated cylinder and head eliminates the need for a head gasket which results in increased cooling and higher levels of reliability.

Although fuel efficiency is a key attribute of all Honda engines, fuel consumption in the new V-Twin engine is reduced to the levels similar to fuel injected model engines of the same size. Innovative Design Features

Honda Engines Background Information

Honda is the world's largest manufacturer of engines, producing and marketing approximately 27 million units globally in 2010 for a diverse array of automotive, motorcycle, marine, and power equipment products. Honda Engines offers a complete line of small, general purpose engines for commercial, rental industry, and consumer applications. Honda engines supply smooth and dependable power for more than 3,000 different product applications including pressure washers, lawnmowers, and rescue and construction equipment.

Additionally, Honda engines are some of the quietest and easiest to start of their kind, even in harsh commercial and construction environments. Such attributes have made Honda engines the popular choice for original equipment manufacturers looking to add value to their own brands.

One Engine for All

Honda continuously works to meet future, lower EPA and CARB standards regarding the performance of its products. In January 2007, Honda Engines began certifying its models to the new, lower California Air Resources Board (CARB) 2007 standards, existing EPA Phase 2 emission requirements and offering 50 state compliant engines. Investing in meeting the strictest of environmental requirements in the development of one engine for use in all 50 states reflects Honda's forward thinking on emission regulations, air quality and the needs of its customers. Moreover, Honda engines meet the new CARB exhaust and evaporative emissions requirements without the use of a catalytic converter.

As a result, the overall emission levels from Honda engines have been reduced by more than 32 percent compared to 1995. Honda engines are in compliance with the current EPA Phase 3 standards (for both exhaust and evaporate emissions).

Defining Net Power in Honda Engines

The SAE J1349 standard measures net horsepower with the manufacturer's production muffler and air cleaner in place. Net horsepower more closely correlates with the power the operator will experience when using a Honda engine powered product. The power rating of the engines indicated in this document measures the net power output at 3600 rpm (7000 rpm for model GXH50, GXV50, GX25 and GX35) and net torque at 2500 rpm, as tested on a production engine. Mass production engines may vary from this value.

Actual power output for the engine installed in the final machine will vary depending on numerous factors, including the operation speed of the engine in application, environmental conditions, maintenance and other variables.

The advanced design of Honda's mini-four stroke engines, including a cross-flow combustion chamber, provides a wide, smooth range of torque unique to four-stroke technology. State-of-the-art design and manufacturing techniques have reduced the number of moving parts. Many of these techniques have resulted in reduced engine weight and smoother operation for the end user.

The Honda GX35 mini four-stroke engine is Honda's most powerful engine for handheld applications. Based on the same Honda 360-degree-inclinable mini four-stroke technology as the GX25, the 35.8cc GX35 features an oil-immersed timing belt and overhead-cam (OHC) architecture.

Honda GC Series engines are designed specifically for premium, high volume residential power equipment applications. Horizontal shaft models are ideal for a variety of consumer products, including pressure washers, water pumps, compressors, and portable generators. Vertical shaft models typically power devices like lawnmowers and pressure washers but also find applications in other residential uses.

Additionally, Honda also introduced electric start options on the GC/GCV160 and GC/GCV190 models, available nationally through Honda Engine distributors and to OEMs.

Honda GS Series of Overhead Cam Engines

The Honda GS Series is positioned squarely between the GC Series premium residential and the GX Series commercial engines.

The GS190 horizontal shaft and GSV190 vertical shaft models are designed to serve both premium residential and light-duty commercial markets. Intended for use on such popular applications as pumps, blowers, mowers, and tillers, these Honda models satisfy the homeowner seeking ultimate performance, and the contractor seeking a lightweight, compact package.

Capitalizing on the same basic OHC architecture as Honda's extremely popular GC engines, the GS features uniblock construction and a unique internal timing belt design that results in the lightest and most compact package in its class. With 187 cubic centimeters of displacement, this efficient design also delivers an unparalleled power-to-weight ratio with quiet operation, and easy starting.

To further enhance performance and durability, the Honda GS engines incorporate a cast iron cylinder sleeve and a redesigned piston with a three-piece oil control ring. Adding to the engine's commercial character, the GSV190 features ball bearings on the flywheel side of the crankshaft, while the GS190 utilizes ball bearings at both ends of the crankshaft. A dual stage air filter with an oiled pre-filter enhances engine performance in the dusty environment often created by mowing or tilling.

Honda GX Series of Overhead Valve Engines

The GX Series offers reliable, easy starting and fuel efficient power for a variety of commercial applications. Featuring four all-new larger models (GX240, GX270, GX340, and GX390) that were completely redesigned in 2010, these engines feature a rugged OHV design that ensures a high level of durability and reliability for construction, maintenance and premium power equipment and makes the engines ideal for the rental market. This market relies on Honda OHV engines to ensure customer satisfaction with a minimal level of maintenance and repair.

The new large GX engine models feature a host of technologies and design elements that allow for improved power output. The engines produce six percent more power than previous models, making them among the most powerful engines in each of their respective categories. This additional power is achieved via an advanced combustion chamber design, the implementation of Digital Capacitive Discharge Ignition (CDI) with variable ignition timing, and an increased compression ratio. Although fuel efficiency is a key attribute of all Honda engines, fuel consumption in the new GX family of engines has been significantly reduced. Large GX engines, for example, increase fuel efficiency by 12 percent. In addition to high fuel efficiency, the new GX engines meet current EPA exhaust emission regulations without the use of a catalyst.

Honda mid GX engines – the GX120, the GX160 and the GX200 – are single-cylinder, horizontal-shaft models that meet current EPA Phase 3 exhaust and evaporative emissions standards. These engines are an ideal fit for an array of commercial turf applications and equipment including generators; construction / industrial equipment; agricultural equipment; water pumps; and pressure washers. The mid GX models are equipped with a number of design enhancements, including a new carburetor chamber coating; a recoil rope design change; the addition of a carburetor filter; and an improved fuel tank guard – all of which improve their fuel economy, reliability and durability. Further, these engines, while having the same existing physical dimensions and power output of the models they replace, boast increased performance resulting, in part, from the incorporation of these innovative features:

improved fuel economy through changes in valve timing, compression ratio, carburetor settings, and cooling system modifications;
emissions standards met through changes in valve timing, carburetor settings, and other proprietary components;
low noise levels achieved via a change in muffler structure design, breather valve, push rod materials, and crank/case cover rigidity;
vibration reduction accomplished through use of a lighter engine piston.

Also part of the GX Series are the GX OHV V-Twin engines. The most powerful engines ever offered by Honda are designed to offer customers more power and adaptability with greater fuel economy in a more compact package. Six V-Twin models (GX/GXV630, GX/GXV660 and GX/GXV690) are available in both horizontal and vertical shaft configurations, are well-suited for light utility vehicles as well as commercial turf, construction and rental equipment applications. More specifically, Honda's V-Twin engines are designed for demanding, power-hungry, commercial applications including: commercial turf equipment (zero-turn radius mowers, lawn tractors, trenchers, stump grinders and chipper/shredders); construction equipment (concrete saws, vibratory rollers, ride-on cement trowels, and generators); additional applications include pressure washers and floor buffers.

The V-Twin features an advanced style that not only looks different from other engines in its class but provides increased functionality. The engine is more compact and offers more versatility for a greater breadth of product applications. A number of elements, including a hemispherical combustion chamber, an integrated cylinder and cylinder head, forged steel connecting rods, a 9.3:1 compression ratio, a digital CDI with variable ignition timing, and twin barrel inner-vent carburetion, contribute to an overall enhanced operation with remarkable fuel consumption and emissions performance.

Overall, Honda produces 20 models in the GX Series, which are available in either horizontal or vertical shaft and in either single cylinder or V-Twin versions. The single cylinder, horizontal shaft models — GXH50, GX100, GX120, GX160, GX200, GX240, GX270, GX340, and GX390 — power a variety of commercial equipment from small pumps and generators to cement mixers, pressure washers, trenchers, concrete saws and construction equipment. The single cylinder vertical shaft models — GXV50, GXV160, GXV340, and GXV390 — perform similar functions where a vertical shaft is required, such as in commercial lawnmowers, power turf equipment, and floor buffers.

The Honda iGX: An Intelligent General Purpose Engine

The Honda iGX is a revolutionary, intelligent, computer-controlled general purpose engine that sets an even higher standard for ease of use, fuel efficiency, and quiet operation. In 2010, Honda expanded its iGX Series with an all-new iGX340 and iGX390 engine. The iGX Series offers further enhancements to the GX series, incorporating an electronic self tuning regulator (STR) governor. Similar to GX, iGX engines are also (OHV) horizontal shaft engines, yet provide additional advanced technologies for more complex applications.

In addition, the iGX340 and 390 models feature an integrated electronic control unit (ECU) that delivers complete drive-by-wire remote control capability and controls key aspects of engine operation.

Benefiting both consumers and the environment, iGX technology results in lower fuel consumption and lower noise through reduced total engine running time and engine speed that can be lowered based on power demands. This intelligent technology works in conjunction with the engine's V-type valve layout and spark plug center combustion chamber to yield a fuel economy increase of approximately 15 percent compared to a similar conventional engine.

Additionally, the iGX is easier for users to operate, eliminating the need for manual manipulation of the choke and throttle and making it ideal for rental applications.

Honda Power Equipment products are assembled at 11 Honda manufacturing facilities around the world, including Honda Power Equipment Mfg., Inc., located in Haw River, North Carolina. Research, development, and testing activities are conducted at Honda R&D Americas, Inc., also located in Haw River, North Carolina, and Honda R&D Co., Ltd., in Japan.

Overall, Honda Power Equipment Mfg., Inc. (HPE) has boosted the number of its general purpose engines produced per year for use by Honda and other OEMs. In addition to engines, HPE produces Honda generators, lawnmowers, snowblowers, pumps, tillers and string trimmers. Honda Riders Win Supercross and Lites Classes at Dodger Stadium

The Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship series made its way to Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California this weekend for round three. Honda was on the top of the podium with TwoTwo Motorsport's Chad Reed winning the Supercross class and GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac winning the Lites class.

It was a tough night for Team Honda Muscle Milk. After getting a bad start in his heat race Justin Brayton missed transferring to the main by one position. In the LCQ he got the holeshot and led for the first few laps but crashed in the whoops, sending him to sixth place, out of contention for the main. Right after the main began, fellow Team Honda Muscle Milk rider Trey Canard got tangled up with a tuff block in the first corner, dragging the cover with him. As a result, he was hindered through the triple jump and was unfortunate enough to have another rider land on him. Canard was knocked unconscious and taken off the track by the Asterisk medical team, where he was then transferred to the hospital for further evaluation.

Canard injured his back in the accident, but has 100-percent movement of his legs. American Honda will release additional information on his condition as it becomes available.

Following a less-than-desirable start in the main, TwoTwo Motorsports Honda rider Chad Reed was given a second chance after the race was red flagged due to the first-lap pileup. Reed got a third-place start the second time around and battled his way to the front of the pack, where he rode consistently to a first-place podium finish. "It feels awesome to get a win, especially at the third round. We are early in the series so I am trying to stay consistent to hopefully get more wins," said Reed.

Lites rider Eli Tomac was setting remarkable lap times during both his practice and heat race, showing that he was going to be the guy to beat that night. In the main event the GEICO Honda rider took the holeshot and never looked back. He quickly gapped the rest of the pack by several seconds, riding a solid 15 laps to the checkered flag. "I am excited for the win tonight and am happy to be leading the points into round four," said Tomac. "If I can get consistently good starts, I believe I can win like I did tonight. I am comfortable out front and plan to stay there."

Honda Issues 2011 North American Environmental Report

Improved U.S. automobile fleet fuel efficiency by 4.1 percent
Virtually eliminated waste to landfill from manufacturing operations
Eliminated 5.6 million miles of truck travel from OEM parts distribution

Attained voluntary CO2 reduction goals for 2010 and announced new goals for 2020

Honda today released its seventh annual report on the environmental impact of the company's operations in the North American region, including the United States, Canada and Mexico. The 2011 North American Environmental Report, published in electronic format only, can be viewed and downloaded here. Highlights of the 2011 North American Environmental Report include:

Products - the CO2-adjusted fleet-average fuel economy of Honda and Acura automobiles sold in the U.S. in model year 2010 rose 1 mpg, or 4.1%, to 25.6 mpg, versus the previous model year. This compares with a U.S. auto industry average increase of 0.1 mpg, or 0.4%, during the same period. Further, the fleet average fuel economy of Honda motorcycles sold in North America in FY2011 was improved 12.0% from the FY2000 baseline.
Purchasing - an estimated 5.6 million miles of truck travel and 6,743 metric tons of CO2 emission associated with the transportation for mass production parts from North American suppliers to Honda plants in North America were avoided through strategic planning and numerous other "green logistics" initiatives.
Manufacturing - waste to landfills was reduced 91.9% from the FY2001 baseline to less than 0.5% of all operating waste from manufacturing, allowing Honda to achieve its goal of virtually zero waste to landfills for all 14 of its plants in the region, including 10 plants operating with absolutely zero waste to landfill.
The CO2 emission intensity of automobile production in the region rose 2.5% from the FY2001 baseline but fell 3.7% from the previous fiscal year as a result of significant efforts to improve the energy efficiency of production.
The energy intensity of automobile production—from electricity and natural gas consumption, representing approximately 96% of total energy use—fell 7.2% from the FY2001 baseline and 5.9% from the previous fiscal year.
Sales and Service - 100% of the trucks delivering Honda and Acura automobiles in the U.S. were certified under the U.S. EPA's SmartWay Transport initiative. Further, 2.2 million pounds of corrugated packaging material and 21,000 wood pallets used in the transport of Honda service parts were eliminated.
Administration - three new facilities received LEED Green-Building certification, giving Honda an industry-leading 11 LEED-certified facilities in North America. Further, conservation efforts at the company's North American headquarters in Torrance, Calif., resulted in a 50% reduction in the volume of materials needing to be recycled over the past five years.
Global CO2 Targets - Honda achieved all but one of its voluntary goals, set in 2006, for a 10% reduction of CO2 emissions from both its products and production operations compared to 2000 levels, including a 12.4% reduction in emissions from Honda and Acura global vehicle fleet. Although the CO2 emissions intensity of automobile production was reduced 6.3% from 2000 levels, the goal of a 10% reduction was not achieved due to the severe reduction in North American production volumes as a result of the global economic recession. In 2011, Honda announced a new target, to be achieved by the end of 2020, to reduce CO2 emissions from the use of its automobile, motorcycle and power equipment product lines by 30 percent, as compared to year 2000 levels.

The 2011 North American Environmental Report covers the company's operations during the fiscal year ended March 31, 2011 (FY2011) and utilizes a lifecycle assessment (LCA) model to report on the environmental impact of Honda's R&D, manufacturing and sales activities in the North America region. The report looks at the environmental performance of the company's automobile, powersports, and power equipment products, its 14 major manufacturing plants operating in North America, and the corporate activities of 17 Honda group companies in the region. Honda Begins Deliveries of 2013 Fit EV

Honda delivered a 2013 Fit EV battery-electric vehicle to the city of Torrance today as one of the first major steps in the Honda Electric Vehicle Demonstration Program, a prelude to the retail market launch of the Fit EV with customers in California and Oregon this summer.

The delivery was marked by a ceremony at the Torrance City Hall, at which a key to the Fit EV was presented to Torrance Mayor Frank Scotto by Steve Center, vice president of the Environmental Business Development Office at American Honda.

"This is an exciting day as we take another important step toward Honda's comprehensive vision for reducing CO2 emissions while at the same time advancing our relationship with the city of Torrance," said Steve Center. "Honda has a long history with electric vehicles starting with the introduction of our first battery-electric car, the EV Plus, nearly 15 years ago. With Honda's extensive experience and the real-world feedback from the city of Torrance, we will be even more prepared for the further customer adoption of electric vehicles."

Over the past year, Honda and the city of Torrance have worked together to gather input from Torrance residents about potential recharging station locations and jointly participated in numerous public awareness events with a Fit EV test vehicle. Honda and the city will continue to further these initiatives while also studying local government fleet usage of an electrified vehicle. The city of Torrance will also receive a Honda plug-in hybrid for additional testing at a later date.

"Today, in our partnership with Honda and their continuing efforts in renewable technologies, we will be driving into a more sustainable future," said city of Torrance Mayor Frank Scotto.

Honda unveiled the 2013 Fit EV at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show and announced plans to begin leasing the 123 city-mile per charge (76 mile range combined adjusted city/highway)¹ battery-electric commuter vehicle to its U.S. customers in the summer of 2012. Equipped with a 20 kWh lithium-ion battery and 92 kW coaxial electric motor, the Fit EV battery can be fully recharged in as little as 3 hours when connected to a 240-volt circuit.

Honda Electric Vehicle Demonstration Program
As part of the Honda Electric Vehicle Demonstration Program, Honda will test the Fit EV with Google Inc. and Stanford University, in addition to the City of Torrance, California. Each program participant will provide Honda with real-world feedback on the Fit EV. Individually, each participant will use the Fit EV to further initiatives such as research into human behavior and various usages like personal, fleet and car-sharing.

Rental Equipment Register (RER) magazine has named the Honda EB6500 industrial portable generator as a recipient of the prestigious 2011 Innovative Product Award. The EB6500 earned first place in the magazine's generators and welders category, selected by a panel of industry experts as displaying innovation in rental industry products.

Trey Canard Makes His 2012 Supercross Return at Chase Field

The second round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship series took place in sunny Phoenix, AZ, this weekend. After a successful season opener, the Honda teams were ready to get under way at Chase Field Stadium.

This was an exciting week for Team Honda Muscle Milk, with the return of rider Trey Canard who missed the opening round in Anaheim while recovering from an earlier injury. "I am excited to be here, and I'm excited to be riding," said Canard. "It is a bummer for me because I am not right up with the guys that I normally compete with, but overall it was a very successful weekend." He rode a respectable race, finishing in seventh place in both his heat and the main event. Canard's teammate Justin Brayton had a successful heat race, finishing second. Early in the main event, Brayton got tangled up and fell to the back of the pack, but he made up a few positions to finish 14th.

GEICO Honda's Kevin Windham had a notable race, getting a good start in the main and running third most of the way. He eventually was passed by Villopoto but maintained a fourth-place finish. Supercross.com/Honda Racing's Andrew Short had another successful weekend, starting with his holeshot and second-place finish in heat one to his sixth-place finish in the main. He was edged out of fifth place after battling with fellow Honda rider Chad Reed with TwoTwo Motorsports.

After setting top lap times during his heat race, GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac got a less than desirable start in the main. Tomac put in an inspiring ride, making his way from 15th to fourth. Along the way he battled with Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda Racing's Travis Baker and Cole Seely. After Baker went down, Seely and Tomac moved past more riders and charged hard for the podium but ran out of time, leaving Tomac in fourth, ahead of Seely who ended up fifth.

Honda Unveils 2013 Accord Coupe Concept

Honda unveiled the dynamic Accord Coupe Concept today at the North American International Auto Show, providing the first official glimpse of the athletic styling direction, as well as revealing a host of new technologies for the all-new, ninth-generation 2013 model, set to go on-sale this fall.

The 2013 Accord will feature three all-new powertrains, including the first U.S. application of both a 2.4-liter direct-injected engine and two-motor plug-in hybrid system from Honda's suite of next-generation Earth Dreams™ powertrain technologies. In addition, the V-6 Accord will be the first Honda sedan to feature a new 6-speed automatic transmission. Both the Accord Sedan and the Accord Coupe models are expected to achieve class-leading fuel economy ratings and will be available with a number of innovative new safety and technological features.

"Marking the 30th anniversary of U.S. production, this new ninth-generation Accord will raise the bar again through a tour de force of new Honda powertrain and safety technologies, geared to ensure that Honda and the Accord continue to lead in fuel economy, safety and fun-to-drive performance," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda.

Design and Packaging

The Accord Coupe Concept features an athletic styling direction for Honda's best-selling model. The front bumper's dynamic lines are highlighted by a revised four-sided honeycomb grille and deeply set multi-reflector headlights. Lower fog-light spoilers are accented by crystallized chrome inlays.

The Accord Coupe Concept's 20-inch, machine-finished, 5-spoke wheels contribute to its solid stance. The rear taillights aggressively sweep into the body, while a trunk -lid spoiler and large exhaust finishers integrated into the bumper underscore the Accord Coupe Concept's muscular exterior.

While the Accord Coupe will remain similarly sized, the Accord Sedan will feature a more compact exterior footprint, adding to its sportier appearance. A shortened length and reduced weight will also give the 2013 Accord Sedan more responsive handling and improved driving dynamics. Both the 2013 Accord Sedan and Accord Coupe will retain the current model's generous cabin space.

Advanced and Efficient Powertrains

The Accord will offer three all-new powertrains for the 2013 model year. The Accord Sedan and Accord Coupe will be the first models in the U.S. to receive the new Earth Dreams 2.4-liter, 16-valve DOHC i-VTEC® four-cylinder engine featuring direct- injection (DI). The engine will be paired to a 6-speed manual transmission or a new Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), which utilizes an innovative cooperative control system for excellent acceleration and responsive shifting. The all-new 2.4-liter DI engine generates significant performance improvements compared to the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine it replaces, producing more than 181 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. In addition to an overall improvement in fuel economy compared to the 2012 model, the new four-cylinder-equipped 2013 Accord models are targeted to deliver class-leading fuel economy1.

The 2013 Accord Sedan and Accord Coupe will also be offered with a re-engineered 3.5-liter, 24-valve, SOHC, i-VTEC V-6 engine, paired to a new 6-speed automatic transmission or an available 6-speed manual transmission. The new V-6 engine generates an increase in horsepower and torque over the current model. The 2013 Accord Sedan and Accord Coupe models equipped with the 6-speed automatic transmission will utilize Honda Variable Cylinder Management ™ (VCM™) technology and are targeted to achieve class-leading fuel economy¹ along with an overall improvement in fuel economy compared to the outgoing model.

The 2013 Accord lineup will also feature the first application of a new two-motor plug-in hybrid system to the Accord Sedan. The Honda two-motor hybrid system moves continuously through three modes - all-electric, gasoline-electric and direct-drive - to maximize driving efficiency and fuel economy.

In all-electric mode, the 2013 Accord Plug-In Hybrid will use a 6 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery and a powerful 120 kW electric motor to achieve an all-electric range of approximately 10-15 miles in city driving scenarios and a top speed of 62 mph. Fully recharging the battery will take less than four hours using a 120-volt, outlet and less than 1.5 hours using a 240-volt charger.

In the gasoline-electric hybrid mode, the Accord is powered by its fuel-efficient 2.0-liter, i-VTEC inline four-cylinder, Atkinson cycle engine, paired with an electric Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT). For more efficient high-speed cruising, the Accord Plug-In Hybrid can engage in a direct-drive mode, in which only the engine drives the front wheels. The Accord Plug-In Hybrid launch next winter.

All 2013 Accord models will incorporate the Honda ECO Assist™ system, an innovative technology that can enhance efficient vehicle operation at the touch of a button, while also providing visual feedback to the driver to promote and confirm a more efficient driving style.

Safety and Technological Innovations

The 2013 Accord will introduce numerous new features for enhanced driver safety, visibility and security. The new Accord will be available with Honda's first application of Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW) technology. Both systems use a camera mounted behind the windshield to alert drivers if the car is moving out of its lane or to warn drivers of a potential collision in front of them.

The 2013 Accord is targeted to earn top scores in both the federal government's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety² (IIHS) vehicle evaluations.

Additionally, the Accord will be equipped with several new technologies to help improve the driver's visibility around the vehicle. The Accord will be the first model to receive the Honda-exclusive LaneWatch™ blind-spot display, which uses a camera system mounted on the passenger mirror for an enhanced view of the passenger-side roadway. The Accord will also receive a rearview back-up camera and an Expanded View Driver's Mirror as standard equipment.

The Accord has always been an exceptional value and the 2013 model will offer more standard equipment compared to the current model, including new advanced technology features. High-tech features that will be found on all 2013 Accord models include Bluetooth®³ HandsFreeLink® phone interface, a full-color intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) and an SMS text messaging function, which can read received texts from compatible cell phones aloud over the audio system. Another standard feature and first for the Accord is the introduction of a Pandora® Internet Radio interface⁴, compatible with the Apple® iPhone®, which works with the vehicle's audio controls and i-MID.

The Honda Accord, currently in its eighth generation, is one of Honda's best-selling vehicles worldwide and remains one of the top-selling automobiles in the U.S. The Accord was launched in 1976 with subsequent major re-designs in 1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2003 and 2008. Good morning and thank you all for joining us here today. It's been an exciting Show already, and we hope to add to that this morning.

special way to the reason we're here today which is the coming launch of an all-new, 9th-generation Honda Accord. The production version of the all-new 2013 Accordwill be hitting the market around the same time as we celebrate an important milestone in the history of Honda and the Accord the 30th anniversary of the start of automobile production in the U.S.

Think about this number since it was introduced in 1976, we have sold more than 11 million Accords in America

and more than 8 million of them have been built in America as well.

As you might have noticed, we've got the very first of the species U.S.-made Accord VIN number 001 on display here today.

And I want to say thank you to the folks from The Henry Ford in Dearborn.

It's on permanent loan there so we thank them for letting us borrow it back for a few days.

The star of our show today is an Accord concept model but before we get to that, let me speak to the positive momentum leading to the launch of this new model.

To say that the past year has been one of incredible challenge is a gross understatement.

2011 was a year that saw our company weather two devastating natural disasters that severely disrupted our global supply chain.

Some automakers have pointed to our reduced sales last year ...including lower Accord sales... as if it were some kind of sales trend...

...When the reality is... we had to cut more than 200-thousand units from our production schedule. And we still topped one million units in sales for the year.

Many of our competitors were enjoying a race with Honda running at half-throttle and they temporarily picked up a lap or two in the process... ...while we were in the pits.

But we have returned to full production with a strengthening product lineup including.... • the all-new CR-V and Civic, • a freshened and more fuel-efficient Pilot,

• a benchmark Odyssey minivan, • a new 4-cylinder version of Crosstour that debuts this month and later this year... • an all-new Accord.

And with all of this backed up by the industry's best quality ratings we're here to serve notice to the competition that Honda is firing on all cylinders again.

We're back to full power and we're again racing with a vengeance.

Of course, being the first U.S.-made car from a Japanese automaker is nowhere near Accord's only claim to fame.

For 30 years and through eight generations, Accord has consistently set the benchmark for... • fuel-efficiency, • low emissions, • safety ...and... • the best overall balance of comfort, features, packaging and fun-to-drive performance in the mid-size segment.

It's the reason why despite year after year of competitors taking aim Accordhas earned an unprecedented 26 Car and Driver ten-best awards. That's a crazy good record no other brand can claim.

This new 9th generation Accord will raise the bar again in part through a tour de force of new Honda powertrain and safety technologies

... all geared to ensure that Honda and Accord continue to be leaders in fuel economy, safety and fun-to-drive performance.

Arriving this fall, Accordwill be the first U.S. vehicle to apply our new Earth Dreams powertrain technology.

This is the series of new engines and transmissions we debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show late last year that will ultimately replace every powertrain in our lineup.

These new engines completely re-envision the structure of Honda'slegendary VTEC technology for more efficient combustion and reduced friction.

The bottom line is engines that achieve both outstanding fuel efficiency and high output for clean and fun driving performance.

... Fuel economy, up performance, up Fun, up.

And with this new Earth Dreams technology, we're aiming to achieve best-in-class fuel economy in every segment in which we compete within the next three years starting with Accord.

The all-new Accord will boast three new powertrains including the first application in the U.S. of our new 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with direct injection that you see to my right ... delivering a significant boost in performance including additional horsepower and an increase in midrange torque.

And the 4-cylinder Accord will also get a 6 speed manual and an all-new continuously variable transmission CVT that will be the best system in the marketplace in terms of efficiency, performance and sporty driving feel. None of the "rubber band" feeling most CVTs are known for and coupled with the new engine it will help achieve class leading fuel economy.

Meanwhile, the V6 Accord Sedan and Coupe will increase horsepower and torque while being paired with a new 6-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual version.

And with the 6-speed automatic, both the sedan and coupe models are estimated to achieve class leading fuel economy.

Further, Accord will become the 5th Honda model with the Eco-Assist function and ECO button to help our customers with a practical approach to improve their own fuel efficient driving habits.

But that's not the end of the powertrain technology story.

The 2013 Accord lineup will see the introduction of Honda's first Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle utilizing our all-new two-motor hybrid system which continuously moves through three different modes to maximize driving efficiency... • all-electric, • gasoline-electric ...and ... • a direct-drive mode.

The Plug-In Hybrid Accord will travel up to 15 miles on electric power alone, with the driver able to control when the vehicle operates in all-electric mode.

If your commute starts on the highway, for example, the driver can decide not to switch to all-electric power until entering city traffic, where the technology has the greatest benefit to fuel economy.

And fully recharging the battery will take less than one and a half hours using a 240-volt charger.

With the Accord Plug-In we will continue to grow our diverse lineup of advanced alternative-fuel vehicles, which includes: • the Civic Natural Gas • the CR-Z, • Insight and Civic hybrids, • the Plug-in Hybrid Accord, • the Fit EV and... • the FCX Clarity fuel cell electric car.

There's so much more we have to tell you about this new Accord, which heralds our strategy for further advancing the Clean, Safe and Fun values of Honda.

But maybe it's time we showed you what we're talking about.

So here it is the cleaner, safer and unquestionably more fun 2013 Accord Coupe Concept.

With its athletic styling including... • the 4-sided honeycomb grille, • rear taillights that sweep a ggressively into the body .. and... • large exhaust finishers integrated into the bumper the 2013 Accord Coupe Concept gives you a strong glimpse of the direction for the all-new Accord lineup coming this fall.

The Accord has been consistently rated as the most fun-to-drive mid-size car and this all-new model will take that bar and raise it higher.

New packaging that delivers on the Man Maximum, Machine Minimum philosophy of Honda design will give the 2013 Accord Sedan • a shortened overall length... • a significant reduction in weight ...and ... • lower vehicle height to achieve a new level of efficiency, more nimble handling and improved driving dynamics.

Believe me; the new Accord will live up to our mission to deliver new products that are unquestionably fun-to-own and fun-to-drive.

And even with the more compact exterior design and lower roofline Accord will boast the same sizable interior space as the current Accord.

Of course, the new Accord is built upon the foundation of the best quality reputation in the industry.

In 2011, Honda posted the most dominant performance in the history of the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study

with Honda finishing as the top mainstream brand in the industry supported by seven of 11 segment-leading products, including Accord. According to the same study, four of the top five assembly lines in the Americas were at Honda plants including both lines at the Marysville, Ohio plant that builds Accord.

But the advanced technology coming to the all-new Accord line is not limited to powertrain.

With the new Accord, we will introduce a wave of new technologies aimed at enhancing driver visibility and industry-leading safety of Honda vehicles.

Our approach to styling Accord has always included a focus on substantial Greenhouse visibilty, something customers have continuously told us they love about Accord's styling.

In spite of the bold and aggressive styling, we haven't compromised on this principle.

In fact, we are expanding it.

For instance, we'll be making the expanded-view driver's mirror that we debuted on our new CR-V last month... ....as standard equipment on every new model in our lineup in the coming years.

Also, you'll see the application of rear view back-up cameras which are already standard on our trucks... expanded to all of our products in the future starting with the new Accord.

And all NAVI-equipped models will be getting the multi-angle back up camera that we debuted on the new CR-V.

In addition, the 2013 Accord will get a new, Honda-exclusive blind spot display we will call "Honda Lane Watch."

With a camera mounted in the passenger side-view mirror, ... the driver can use the display to identify vehicles in their blind spot through real-time video without the risk of false warnings found in some other systems.

And Accord will be the only vehicle in its class to make this feature available.

And, finally, let's talk about safety.

Last month, the IIHS gave a 'Top Safety Pick' rating to ten additional models from American Honda, giving us a total of 12 with top-class IIHS safety ratings.

Of course, the current Accord is on the list as one of the first vehicles in the industry to earn this distinction.

But we aren't stopping there.

In the area of collision avoidance, we will be deploying two additional ew technologies • forward collision warning ...and... • lane departure warning that will be applied across every model in our lineup in the years to come ...starting as an available technology on the new Accord.

Both systems use a digital camera mounted behind the windshield to monitor the roadway in front of the driver ... ....and warnthe driver of changing traffic conditions in front of them or to alert the driver if the car is moving out of its intended lane.

And again starting this fall with the new Accord we'll begin applying new ejection mitigation airbag technology with a wider deployment profile of the side curtain airbag.

We are doing this a full two years in advance of new safety regulations going into effect in 2015.

So we're serious about our commitment to continue to deliver products that are cleaner, safer ....and even more fun than ever before.

And we're doing it with leading-edge technologies applied broadly to our product lineup.

As you can see along with a compelling safety, fuel economy, and value story

Honda's fundamental commitment to performance is alive and well.

And our number one priority going forward is to make products that our customers want to drive products that measure up to the very high standards and expectations that they have for Honda.

It's going to be an exciting year and a very competitive race.

And we're happy to be re-joining that race at full strength.

Honda Starts the 2012 Season Strong

The 2012 season of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship series kicked off this past weekend at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, to a sold-out crowd of 45,050 race fans.

Anaheim marked the debut of Team Honda Muscle Milk, with Justin Brayton finishing fourth in the Supercross class on his CRF450R while teammate Trey Canard sat the event out recovering from a recent injury. Other Honda Red Riders also started the new season strong, including Chad Reed of TwoTwo Motorsports finishing in second, while Troy Lee Designs/ Lucas Oil/ Honda's Cole Seely took the Supercross Lites win on his CRF250R, followed by GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac rounding out the podium in third.

After going down hard in the first corner of his heat race Brayton was forced to race the Last Chance Qualifier, where he finished first, allowing him to transfer to the main. Brayton spent most of the race in eighth, but surged with five laps to go, passing fellow Honda rider Andrew Short plus Ivan Tedesco and James Stewart to take fourth. "I found my groove on the track after a few practices and bike adjustments, and was pretty confident going into the night show," said Brayton. "I had second gate pick in heat one, where I lined up right inside Villopoto. We got a pretty good start but something happened, sending his back tire into my front, causing me to high side and crash. After getting a good start and winning the LCQ, I boosted my confidence back up going into the main. I got a decent start in the main and was able to pick it up about halfway through, where I made my way to fourth."

Reed put in a solid ride aboard his CRF450, starting with a win in his heat race and a second-place finish in the main. Going into the first turn Reed was in third place but he quickly passed Tedesco for second, which is where he stayed throughout the rest of the race. Fellow Honda riders Andrew Short and Kevin Windham also finished in the top ten with seventh- and eighth-place finishes.

Lites rider Cole Seely had an impressive start to the season with a first-place podium finish. "It's great to come out on top at a race that gets so much hype," said Seely. "This year my main focus is consistency and training. As long as I stay consistent each week I think I can win the championship."

GEICO Honda rider Eli Tomac had a disappointing heat race but was able to come back and win the LCQ to move into the main, where he placed third on the podium. His teammate Will Hahn finished a respectable eighth place, while Travis Baker with Troy Lee Designs/ Lucas Oil/ Honda finished tenth.
